Re: Uncertain future for .io domains?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

No new thoughts, but a few points to emphasize:

?

  1. If the .io domain is deprecated, all articles we¡¯ve seen so far point to a three-to-five-year transition period before the .io domain is removed.
  2. This provides plenty of time for Mark and his team to develop and execute a plan to guide ¡°Groups¡± through transition,
  3. It is the top-level domain name .io that is potentially being retired, not ¡°Groups¡± itself,
  4. Groups itself, i.e. the collection of files, photos, data, messages, and membership data, physically exists wherever Mark and his team have stored it, either in their own datacenter, or purchased space on a server somewhere,
  5. .io is just a domain, Mark and crew can simply register a new domain . .? ¡°Groups.someothertopdomain¡±, and for starters redirect traffic from groups.io to groups.somothertop domain, which links to the existing physical location.? Over time, instead of referencing ¡°groups.io¡±, folks begin referencing ¡°groups.someothertopdomain¡±.? Eventually all references to the old domain are replaced by references to the new. The only thing users would need to do is to upgrade their groups e-mail address in their personal address book and replace any links they¡¯ve retained new upgraded links to the new source. From the user perspective, pretty much like when various groups were migrated to groups.io from older platforms ¨C On Friday, your group was located via your old domain.? On Monday you sent your e-mails to the new domain.? Actually, perhaps even simpler if Mark can use re-direct options.

?

This is definitely not something any of us need to lose any sleep over.

I don't believe it has anything to do with what groups.io is doing.? It's likely how you're adding the images.? Have you tried all the suggestions from your previous topic about this?

Photos embedded with a msg end up piled up at end of msg

? ? ? I post a weekly list of local astronomy events for the San Francisco Bay Area called BayAstro. With each event I usually include a relevant photo or image. Unfortunately, over the last several wks, the photos have gotten detached from their listings and end up piled up at the bottom of the entire msg. Sometimes, the problem gets corrected by someone at .io. But then the problem comes back.

If she is writing from the group homepage, she can look at the menu and see Mod written in blue beside Home.

I wonder whether your member is using her correct email address, the address with her moderator status. It is possible she has two accounts.

I think Mark has been trying to make things more consistent across the platform, as well as optimize for smaller screens and the app.? I've been caught off guard a few times, but it's more 'muscle memory' than a real problem.

Re: Sending a message to a new member regarding their post

Thanks, Duane. I figured it was something like that. Having been in this situation since the change, it now doesn't make sense to me. Everything else a moderator might want to do to keep messages moving is right together at the bottom. But when I needed to contact a member to get a message problem straightened out and approved, it's hiding elsewhere, and not intuitive for the situation. I really think this is function that could be in two places, because there re two different scenarios that could lead a person to need this function.

Sending a message to a new member regarding their post

I got an email notice of a new message being posted to one of my premium groups. I went to the pending message approval page, and find the sender has not signed his post with a valid name as required by group rules. It seems that in the past, one of the options below the message display was contact the sender, but that doesn't appear now. My options now are to approve it or delete it. In the past, I've contacted the member and had them add a display name to their membership, or send me one and I can add it to their account for the group. Am I confused, or did this get changed and I missed it?

Hi Christos,

Ah, you may be on to something...? Most software has an option for how much compression to apply to a JPEG image; I bet they've got it cranked all the way toward lossless.?

I've asked about this; will report back.

A shot in the dark, but unlike the JPEG Standard encoding which everyone has no problems with, I have seen before a few apps sometimes having problems with Lossless encoding and once or twice with Progressive encoding. Ask him what encoding he used, if he knows. Usually that setting is viewable wherever Save As JPEG is used, or it's set somewhere in the app settings.

First, go to Admin, Members.?
Use Filter to find moderators. See whether that member is a moderator or not.
Click on that moderator's name to open her record.
There is a blue menu item Membership. Click to open Activity History, Email Delivery History.
?
Also you can go to Admin, Activity and look for "xxxx@xx changed group settings via web" - in Activity History. That should track who changes the group to Announcement-Only and when.

You previously posted that you "close the group" by setting it to Announcement Only. Is that what you're still doing??

If so, she should still be able to post. If you're doing something else, probably not.

Here's what one of my moderators explained to me in four key points. Yes, she is listed as a moderator, and it says Posting Always Allowed:

1) I used to be able to respond to posts after the group closed for the weekends.?

2) For many months now, I haven't been able to respond to the group. It will only respond as a private message, which then starts a conversation through my private email.??

3) I'm not trying to private message. It's the only option available to me.

4) I can't find anything in settings to change this problem.? Help!

How do I help her undo this mess she's in?

Mod's note: ?Merged this as a follow-up to her original email.?

One of my moderators needs help! She can't post anymore to the group after we close it on weekends.

This is what my moderator sent to me, below. Yes, she is listed as a moderator as "Posting always allowed". Please help me help her!!

She states her problem in four steps:

1) I used to be able to respond to posts after the group closed on Saturdays for our two day break, and the response would go to group. ?
2) But for many months now, I haven¡¯t been able to respond to the group!
3) Instead, it will only respond as a "private message", which then starts a conversation through my private email. ?
4) I¡¯m not trying to private message!!? It's the only option available, and I can't find anything in settings that would change it.?

HOW as owner do I help undo this problem she has as a moderator??

Re: Automatic Image resizing broken?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Well, that's what I thought, too.? But the browser (Firefox, in this case) says it's a JPEG image, so it's at least vaguely familiar to the browser.? The question is what might be tripping them (my browser and Groups.io) up.? Both seem to be finding something odd about the images.

The thing is, they display just fine in the email I got, and the images display in Firefox just fine when opened directly.

As for the picture's pedigree, here's what the poster told me:
The shots I sent out where taken with a canon EOS 5Dmark IV camera on a tripod but not guided.? I compressed them from ~ 20 megabyte? Jpegs to ~4 megabyte Jpegs so that the server would reject them. I did a little post processing to remove some noise and remove some hot pixels with picture window 7 an old program which is no longer supported but works fine.
The Picture Window 7 software (presumed the last piece in the chain) has apparently been superseded by version 8, but it's still available for download.? We're going to try a few things, but in the mean time I've asked that they manually reduce the size of the images before posting.
