Re: banning a member from ever joining a groups.io list
Sarah,
Is there a way to ban an email address from ever joining a list?Go to the Members list, and then use the Members tab (button across the top) to select "Banned". Below the list of banned email addresses is an entry box for you to add an address to the banned list. There you can enter an address that isn't currently a member of the group. If for example I know that x causes trouble is there a way to ban allYou would have to know and enter each of their email addresses. There's no facility to ban a "person" or "account" and have it automatically ban all of their email addresses. Shal |
banning a member from ever joining a groups.io list
Hello to all. Is there a way to ban an email address from ever joining a list? If for example I know that x causes trouble is there a way to ban all of their email address and they just get rejected post haste? I tried looking in the admin area but I either missed it or the option does not yet exist.
Thanks to all, and have a blessed Sunday. Sarah k Alawami: Owner of Alawami Productions, where quality is key. Check us out at and for the itunes page go here. |
How to remove a data base element
I just migrated a group from Yahoogroups to here.? In checking over things, I found a database entry that was migrated that applies to yahoogroups.? I can find out how to delete the actual information in the database entry, but I can't seem to find how to remove the entry that says the database has 0 entries.? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Links in footers disappear with a different cause - "/html" in source?
Gary,
When I look at the message source of what was sent out by theIf you've kept an example forward it to [email protected] to see if they can fix it. The cause may be broken formatting in the message sent to the group, but groups.io's code may need to be more careful to handle whatever syntax problem allowed these misplaced span ends to get through. If you're using an email client like Thunderbird use the "Forward as attachment" option to preserve the original message formatting. There may be ways of doing this in other email interfaces, but the ordinary form of forwarding, which includes the forwarded message in the body of your new message, will likely "fix" the evidence. In an interface like Gmail on the web, I think you'd have to use the Show Original feature, then either Download Original, Copy to clipboard, or just copy/paste the big text box into a text file that you attach to your message to support. Links in footers disappear with a different cause - "/html" in source?
Hi all
A heads-up if you have people who post messages to your group that started in Mailchimp. I have been trying to track down an issue which sounded the same as Drew¡¯s "Why no Links in Footers?¡± one. But it looks like the cause is different. After some sleuthing, it turns out that the email as sent to the group was a copy of an html email originally from Mailchimp. ?When I look at the message source of what was sent out by the??email, it has an </html> tag ending the message, just before the??footer. Ie it looks like this: actual html message Depending on the mail client looking at it, it may stop rendering at the /body or the /html. Or it may just ignore them and continue rendering.? In Apple Mail, it stops. But if I forward the email to someone using Apple Mail, then the footers reappear ¡ª the Apple mail client strips the stray /html and all is good. Not sure if there is anything??can do about this! Cheers, Gary |

Hi all,
This week's change log: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. * Completed work on converting system to new search cluster. Mark Fletcher wrote: All the code is now written, but I have not yet decided how to do theQuick and dirty, versus infrastructure for future updates. I can see where it would be a tough call. I'm not so urgently in need of having new search update instantly that I'd want him to do it the quick way, YMMV. * Did another dump of the archives to the new search cluster. This should let pt start testing with his new group. * Only permit changes to a group's plan if you are designated the payor. Good. No more surprises on my credit card. * In the Billing page, only show your payment history for the group. I was ok with the other owners seeing the payments I'd made, even though that included the last four digits of the CC used. But I don't see a problem with this change. Especially if the activity log now records which owner/mod made any payments (reported last week). Comments about these others are also welcome: * SYSADMIN: Tested upgrade of database to Postgres 9.6. * SYSADMIN: Revamped firewall rules for increased security. * INTERNAL: Now caching successful delivery information instead of directly writing it to the database. * CHANGE: When viewing an attachment, if there's an error from S3, retry an additional 2 times, for the case where a message was just added and the attachment hasn't had time to propagate to S3 properly. * SYSADMIN: Changed some Linux memory parameters on the main database machine in an attempt to track down the sporadic slow commit issue. * BUGFIX: Send confirmation email/send bounce probe were not working. * NEW: For premium/enterprise groups, 'Send Confirmation Email' is replaced with a 'Confirm' button, to confirm the member. * NEW: For premium/enterprise groups, when approving a pending subscriber who is also not confirmed, we confirm the member. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |
Re: Upload to files???
Michael,
Member is trying to upload an excel file into a folder he created andDo you mean that you don't see a File Upload button in his folder either? I reviewed the settings and it appears I have everything checkedIn the Features section of the group's Settings page, if the Files Permissions option is set to "Subscribers can view and upload" that should be all that's necessary. The only other issue I remember might be if your group has reached the storage limit. But then I'd think you'd be out for Photos too (I believe the 1 GB limit is shared between Attachments, Photos, Files, Database Images, and Wiki Images). Shal |

Re: Import archives from Mailman

Tom,
I see there is a feature to migrate from Yahoo Groups. Is there anyThere is work being done on an API, but I don't know if it would support this activity. As far as I know importing Mailman lists has only been done on a case-by-case basis so far - ask Mark at [email protected] and he will likely be able to import the member list and messages. Shal |
Import archives from Mailman
#transfer
I see there is a feature to migrate from Yahoo Groups. Is there any way to migrate a Mailman list? Accessing the list of members is easy enough to do manually. What I'm more interested in is a way to import the mailing list archives. This could be done by scraping the web archives or uploading the data in Mbox format. Does Groups.io support anything like this? Is there an API that would support spinning my own solution?

Re: Search syntax
Hi Shal,
It could be that your group is too new. The search database for the newThanks, that must be it. The Tools button opens up a panel of advanced search features. Not muchYes, I noticed these, a good sign the development is going in the right direction. I also noticed in the other threads on beta you and others were advocating for some of the new features. Much appreciated. Reagrds pt |

Re: Search syntax
pt,
That said, the Test New Search button doesn't seem to work in myIt could be that your group is too new. The search database for the new search isn't being automatically updated (that's part of the work for rolling it out) - so messages posted after the last time Mark ran an import won't be found. I don't know if he's imported messages to the new-search database any more recently than July 18th, that's the most recent message I've found in Beta. One thing that could be useful is having the advanced searchThe Tools button opens up a panel of advanced search features. Not much there yet, but I'm hoping it will evolve into a comprehensive set of filters for all message metadata. Right now the only such filter is for the message date. There's also a filter for whether message signatures are included in the search, and a control for displaying individual message results or grouping them by topic. Shal |
Re: Search syntax
Hi David,
Good point. I guess we'll have to test out thoroughly once New Search comes online and then make appropriate suggestions to Mark. One thing that could be useful is having the advanced search option/window, like google does when you want to specify all the details of your search exactly. pt |
Re: Search syntax
Hi Shal,
I had a look through a few threads on beta forum, but didn't find specific reference / link to syntax. But, from what everyone's saying, and after playing a bit with the new search here, it seems to work like google search - that is, the default operator is AND, not OR. That said, the Test New Search button doesn't seem to work in my group - whenever I click it, I just get 'no results found'. Is there a way to turn this function on somehow? Or is it just a matter of the admin guys switching it on in my group whenever they get to it on the list of their things to do? pt |

Hi all,
The last two week's change logs: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. * Work on converting the system over to the new search system. Long awaited. I hope it also includes or leads to additional work on the "Tools" panel. * Improvements to logging of group plan changes. This one will help if I have another mis-cue between myself and a co-owner over re-authorizing the one-month Premium plan. Part two of this change will be preventing the co-owner from charging upgrades to my credit card - which currently can happen. * Group Guidelines member notice, and the ability to have it sent out on the 1st of every month. You may note a new Guidelines link, just below the Home link, in the left column on GMF's web pages. A slightly cut-down version of what I've been sending every month as an event reminder. I haven't enabled this one to be sent every month; I'm planning to test it in my test group before I make any changes to the monthly message here. And since the only way to test it is to wait for the first of the month, it may take a while. Comments about these others are also welcome: * INTERNAL: Work on the API. * SYSADMIN: Re-organize nginx config files to make adding enterprise groups easier. * BUGFIX: For moderators with approve pending members, ban members, or remove members perms but without the set member subscription options permission, we incorrectly allowed them to see the complete member list. * INTERNAL: Completed utilities to move existing data to the new search architecture. * BUGFIX: Fixed queries against the new search database that contained restricted characters (/+=){} * CHANGE: If someone tries to subscribe via email to a subgroup and they are not subscribed to the parent group, first subscribe them to the parent group. If that's successful (ie. if the parent group is not restricted), then also subscribe them to the sub group. * CHANGE: Added sr-only spans to icons in Files view for screen readers. * BUGFIX: In some cases, HTML messages had quoted parts displayed twice in the archives. * BUGFIX: When the reply window is open, and you navigate away from the page without entering anything in the reply body, don't generate a draft. * INTERNAL: Upgrade to Go 1.9 compiler * NEW: In the pending message displays, if a message is a special message, it will now be labeled as such. * BUGFIX: Databases imported from Yahoo had a bug. Adding a column would cause another column to lose data. Fixed the import system, and fixed existing databases. * BUGFIX: Delete message wasn't working on iPhones. * CHANGE: We now look for/fix invalid UTF-8 characters in message subject lines. * BUGFIX: For groups with message editing disabled, we were incorrectly not permitting people to delete their own messages. * SYSADMIN: Changed how Postgresql was logging, to try to track down a sporadic slow query issue. * SYSADMIN: Set up certbot automatic Let's Encrypt certificate renewal. * CHANGE: Updated the message sent when transferring a Yahoo group. It now lists the email address the person was registered under and explains how to log in if there isn't a password set. * BUGFIX: If using the send login link function to access a subdomain, the redirect was incorrect after logging you in. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |

One issue that people with multilingual groups will face is stopping the search engine from trying to substitute English guesses for non-English words. A group, for example, that mixes English with Romanized, classical Indic words, to pick an example out of the blue :-), might have problems with searches. We would need to force exact searches for some words. The problem would be complicated by alternate spellings of non-English words. David. On 9/8/2017 3:08 PM, Shal Farley wrote:
