Re: Groups.io site updates Export Function
If it were me, I'd try an export, then unzip it to see exactly what it contains. It would probably be those individual files that would be used to upload to another site.

Re: Maintenance of photos
All of these ideas have been presented on the beta group (the official suggestion box for the site) and most are on the TODO list. While many of us may agree with them, there's nothing we can do because all members here are site users like you.

Re: Groups.io site updates Export Function
NEW: You can now export all parts of your group, including chats,> files, photos, wikis and calendar events. I think this is a great improvement, and should address the concerns some people have had about the viability of Groups.io. I'm going to use this function, as it will be more inclusive than the backups I've made. I have one question about this function though. In the unlikely event that Groups.io closed down, or a group owner decided to move to another site, how would this zip file of the group be utilized on another site to make a new group? Do other sites that have groups have a Import Your Group Via Zip File function? Don |

Maintenance of photos
It would be nice if group owners could see a list of photos sorted by size for the purpose of? deleting and or reformatting
the photos and re uploading them after they have been converted to a smaller size.? ? Optionally a sort by album name would be helpful as well.? ? ?In any list sorted by size, it would be helpful for there to be an indicator of what album the image was in and also the specific file size. |

Re: Poll results
Yes, I know anyone can log in to see the poll results.? The results need to be sent to an organization that our group is a member of.? We had to poll our group in order to present the results to the parent organization regarding changes in some rules.? We might have to use something like Survey Monkey if they won't take our word for the results.? Thank you.
|

Re: Poll results
You could just send a link to the actual poll message, but then everyone would need to log in, if they're not already and the messages are private, to see the results. I don't really see a problem with either of the suggested methods because anyone could always compare it to the actual poll post results online.

Re: Down for Maintenance Notice
Dan,
Is there a Beta (as in pre-production testing) System or was thisThere is no separate Beta system. There is a group by that name, the name chosen when the entire site was considered to be in beta test. I'm not 100% sure it isn't still. If the latter, why was the outage notice posted in a Beta Group andBecause this group is not owned by Groups.io, it is owned by me. Nor are there even (to my knowledge) any Groups.io employees reading this group. Also, as has been mentioned elsewhere, the roughly 850 members of this group likely represent only a small fraction of all the group owners and moderators; there being roughly 6800 listed Groups.io groups, plus an unknown number of unlisted ones. I'm not defending having posted the notice in solely beta (that has an even smaller membership than this group), but that notice was also posted as a banner on Groups.io web pages for a period of time before the outage began. So at least those actively using the site would likely have seen that before the site went offline. Those using the service by email might or might not have noticed the outage. Although we get used to near-instantaneous email delivery, email as an infrastructure does not carry any timeliness guarantees. Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
The last two change logs: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. NEW: You can now export all parts of your group, including chats,A long-awaited feature to provide moderators the ability to backup the group's content against any future inability to use Groups.io, or desire to move the group to another platform. Note: there's currently a bug if the archive is too large. Wait for it to be corrected early next week. CHANGE: Increased the seriousness of the maintenance page.Apparently the former page was overly informal, causing some users to wonder if they'd actually connected to Groups.io or if the site had been hacked. CHANGE: When sending a message to a member and BCC All is checked, weCorrects a confusion that the feature was not working for some groups. Comments about these others are also welcome: CHANGE: Wording tweaks on event notification emails re: RSVPs. Please call out any you find significant. Re: Automated email to members who put in a join request, suddenly not working
Steve,
Ok, this is frustrating. When a member joins, he's automatically sent a questionnaire.? In the past few days, that feature has stopped working, we've never had an issue before.Have a look in the pending member's Email Delivery History. It may show the disposition of the Pending Subscription notification, if nothing else has been sent since. Have a look in the Member Notices tab of your group's Settings page and verify that you have one Pending Subscription notice marked "Active". If not, the question changes to who/what changed or deleted the notice. And that question you may be able answer in the group's activity logs. Otherwise, what is your basis for believing that the Pending Subscription notification hasn't been sent? Have you eliminated other reasons that the pending member might not have seen the notice (such as it being delivered to his/her spam folder)? Re: Automated email to members who put in a join request, suddenly not working
Julie McMurry
What platform were you using for the questionnaire? Having a questionnaire step before they're even routed to the moderators would be amazing. Having those responses be editable over time by the user and having the fields be editable over time by the moderators would make groups.io a truly killer app. I've warmed to it primarily because the alternatives are increasingly worse.

Dan,
I contacted Wilson, the owner of the other group transfer service, to find out more. If I find out anything interesting, I'll post it here. Donald On Fri, 11 May 2018 19:51:09 -0700, "Dan Hartford" <danhartfordphoto@...> wrote: Donald, [excess quote trimmed by moderator] |

Thank you for your detailed reply. I'll have to look through it in detail. We already have our WP site so are already paying for hosting (BlueHost). We're just looking for better integration than we had with Yahoo. We already have one step in that direction with the ability to Direct Add new members to IO when they join the club. It's manual but simple and we don't have to get into that Invite, lost invitation, invite again, accept but doesn't' put in real name, etc. cycle. We also are not putting a link to the Groups.IO message page on our site which may satisfy the Board that it's integrated. But you also provided some things to think about - at least in terms of 2nd part. Thanks -- Dan -----Original Message-----

I'm not a big WP person, either, but I have several WP handbooks and once ran a WP web site. If you're thinking of migrating a Yahoo Group to groups.io then eventually to a hosted site, consider this before having to do the migration twice: "Perhaps you're considering moving to phpBB or Wordpress or maybe you just want a better way to search Yahoo groups. We offer a bespoke migration service to a new forum or merge with an existing forum." I am friends with the person who develops PG Offline and also the above service but have not tried what he offers because I already moved my groups to IO and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for a hosting service, but you are thinking of using web hosting anyway, so this might be the best approach. You can find an email link on his web site and inquire about it. I would ask him if he has a sample WP or phpBB site you can browse through to see what it looks like and how it works, maybe get a referral to a group you can join to see how the user experience is. While you're at it, you can ask for a referral to both types of sites, one for WP and one for phpBB. That way you can decide on which might be a better solution for you. Don't forget to ask about how pictures, files, folders, etc., are handled. There are plugins for WP that will provide a forum. This is just a sample of some easy ones (I have not tried any of these): I would suggest, though, that you stick with dedicated forum software that's full-featured like phpBB or vBulletin. Or one of the mailing list software packages. Here are two aquarium fish related phpBB and vBulletin forums: ad=h uses phpBB software (free) uses vBulletin software (not free) I actually set up a complete forum for an aquatic plant club for the SW Ohio area using phpBB. It worked very well. The club fell apart over time and now the web site and forum site is no longer hosted anywhere. Putting the forum together was not a cake walk by any means, but I never did one before and put it together in a week or two. It took a lot of my evening time, so expect to spend some time with it. If you use dedicated bulletin board software, you will no doubt have many more options to choose from to manage your board. I believe there are plugins for these two packages, too. Most web hosting sites have phpBB in their software control panel so it's easy to install. My other suggestion was to install Majordomo or Listserv mailing list software (or similar) if all you need is a messaging system that broadcasts all posts to all members. If you need an area for pictures, files, or other things, that's beyond the scope of what I've done, but you should be able to find software to install on your hosted site that can handle those. You might even be able to find software that will handle everything without using separate packages to take care of those features. The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it. --Selwyn Duke |

Word Press (WP) Integrations?
#integration
PACC Digital Chair
Hi,
Just getting going with IO with 2 live suibgroups so far and I've been meaning to ask about integrations.? These sub groups are in relation to a club who's main web site and membership list are built on the Word Press platform.? One of the goals (longer term goal than avoiding Yahoo problems) is to have a discussion group like IO more tightly integrated with our WP system.? The first goal is for the Groups to establish membership (at the group and sub-group level) based on various attributes of the Word Press Users table.? So, for example, our "Main" group as well as the members group in IO would be all the people who are "Active" in the WP Users Table.? The members of the IO "Board" subbgroup would be all the? people in WP who have a? role of? "Administrator", etc.? ?In other words as we make changes to users in WP (for example we deactivate them via a chron job when their membership expires unless they've paid dues for the following period) they would be added or removed from our IO group and appropriate Sub groups.? I'm not clear if this sort of thing is the intention of your Integrations feature or not, and if so what you have for Word Press? The 2nd, and lower priority, is to have the groups tool embedded in WP (I guess as a plug in - I'm not a WP person). Can someone let me know what we can do in this area? thanks -- Dan |
