Send a message to applicants #addmembers #howto

I have a group which we (the moderators and co-op board) want to be visible to the public - to encourage members to join our co-op. The issue that I have is that I (and possibly the rest of the board, after we vote) do not want to have members joining the group via the usual GIO online or email processes. Our GIO membership is restricted to current (paid) members of our co-op.

I would like to be able to respond to email or online applicants to our group that we welcome their interest and will gladly send them an invitation to join when we receive their paid membership application/renewal and provide a link to our static, public website with the membership application available. Is there a way to have that kind of message be the default response to someone wanting to come directly into our GIO community?

Thanks in advance for the helpful suggestions.

Re: Can I move my Big Tent group to groups.io? #transfer

Good news, I think, from BigTent on migrating a group!

I contacted BigTent Support for help, as the FAQs recommend, and found help immediately.? It was clear from the initial exchange of emails that BigTent Support really only wants to deal with the moderator or "administrator" they have listed for the BigTent forum in question.? Once we took care of that and got the moderator of the original BigTent group in the picture, it took only a few days before BigTent Support sent her an export .tsv.gz file of virtually all of our group's discussions.? According to one of our moderators who know much more than I do about migrating data:

"File looks good. I unziped the file. The format is very straightforward. Every entry is a single line. Responses are designated as comment: <original subject>. The text has embeded html break strings to denote newlines in the text."

I believe our next step will be to try moving the data to our new group at Groups.io and see how it flies.

Naturally, I have questions along the following lines but the days ahead ought to provide answers:

--How do we move the data to Groups.io?

--Can we get help from Groups.io Support in doing that?
?
--When put up the data, can/will it be broken down into individual posts/threads as it originally appeared on BigTent?
?
--Should we try to add a part of the file first, and test it?? Or move the whole file?
?
--Then should our moderators beta test it and see how it flies?

Any further thoughts on this are most welcome.??

Re: Group setttings moderator #moderation

Paula,

I created a group. Now I can not see how to modify the group settings.
I have no "admin" tab on left.
That most likely means that you are no longer logged in, or logged in using a different email address than you were using when you created the group.

Another possibility is that you aren't looking at the group you created. It always pays to check for the simple problems early on (the famous "is it plugged in?" question).

Look in the upper right corner, in the blue bar: does it show your name, or does it say Log In and Sign Up? If it doesn't show your display name then you are not logged in.

What buttons do you see in the left column? If you do not see Subscription then you logged in using an account (email address) which is not subscribed to the group.

If you see Subscription but there is no "Owner" or "Mod" badge on the Home button then you are logged in using an account which is a member of the group.

Rather than have us guess, can you tell us what you did between the time you created the group and now when you cannot see any Admin pages? Minutes, hours, days? Have you logged out, changed browsers, changed computers?

When I try to post to the group, I get a message that says that the
message has to be approved by the moderator. I created the group, so
I should be the moderator.
Being the group owner doesn't mean that your messages do not require approval.

I created the group, so I should be the moderator.
In particular, your role should be "Owner". But only when logged in and only when logged in using the same email address as when the group was created.

If I somehow did not set that when I created the group, ...
The Owner role is automatically applied to the account that created the group.

Should I delete the group and try again?
You can't without access to the Admin pages.

Does the group have be approved?
New groups must be approved before you can post messages, but Gerald is correct: not being approved does not block your access to the Admin pages.

Paula,

Another follow up to my other post. In looking at Paul M's response, I think he was assuming that you were referring to waiting for a transfer of a group from Yahoo Groups to complete. That does take some time.

Hi Paula,

Unfortunately the answer to your question on your grop;s approval is, 'it depends.'

Amongst other things it depends upon how many groups are stacked up ahead of yours waiting, like your group , to be approved.

So it could happen tomorrow or perhaps next week.

But it it doesn't happen in longer than ten days or so you might inquire again.

?I don't think this is correct.

My experience, 5 minutes ago to verify, and many times before is that I can create a new group and I immediately have access to the Admin / Settings.

Please log out of groups.io. Then log back into the account that you used to create the group.?If that still doesn't work and if you are absolutely certain that you are using the correct email address when you login, and you really want to keep the same group name, put in a request to support at groups dot io for assistance.

Otherwise, just start a new group with a (slightly) different name. It takes about one minute.

You have acknowledged that you have more than one email address. It really sounds to me that you are not logged in with the same one that you used to create the group. Try logging out and then logging back in again with the other one.

Still no admin tab.? Does the group have be approved?
My experience is that a new group gets approved in less than one day.

Good luck,
Bruce

If I can only delete the group if I am signed in as owner,? then this is a problem.? Who the heck is the owner if I am not?? I have 4 members (my adult children) but they were invited to join by me (and they are not even in my house let alone using my computer).??

?
Does anyone have any recommendations?? It seems to me if I can not delete the group, then I have to just unsubscribe myself and ask all my kids to as well.??

Did you log in with the same address that you created the group with?

I had to set up a meeting with a co-moderator to find out what was happening with her because she couldn¡¯t find the admin tab and her screen looked different than mine. We finally discovered that her daughter had used her laptop and not logged out. She was still logged in as her daughter who had no moderator privileges.

Re: How to disable user? #membership

I have the same situation on one of my groups.? I remove the member 30 days after their dues expire (also warning them at expiration that it's coming).? If they later pay their dues, I send them an invitation, they accept, and it's as though they never left (provided they use the same email address).? Depending on how strict your group is, you may want to send them the warning 30 days early.

A 'Suspended' membership setting would be nice, but I doubt that it would be a high usage item, so would be a very low priority for a feature addition (unless it were a super simple change).
