If they delete the cookie, they will find themselves logged out. If the cookie expires, they will also find themselves logged out. How many times they visit the site in the interim does not matter. I do realize that this can be disconcerting, especially to those accustomed to being logged out for "inactivity." One time, I was in the middle of composing a message; I hit the "send" button and mysteriously found myself on the home page. It took a minute before I realized that my browser cookie had expired while I was in the message editor! Thankfully, once I logged in again the message draft was still available and ready to be sent. To reiterate: -- The cookie is created by logging in. -- It expires in 30 days, if you don't explicitly log out, or delete your browser cookies. -- If you want to reset the cookie, you have to log in again. -- Repeatedly visiting the site has no effect on when the cookie expires. Only by logging in again will the cookie "clock" be reset. -- Group emails will be delivered to you whether you are logged in or not. Re: staying logged in to Groups.IO
Group:
I may have started this discussion about a week ago. Now I know how to change my password so it is easier to get logged on again. A few days after I logged back on, I noticed that my only Yahoo group that has pictures attached now and then, was not allowing me to see them. A day or two later after Groups.io was good again, I noticed that that Yahoo Group once again allowing me to see the occasional attached pics. So now I suspect a connection between Yahoo and Groups.io. Maybe a coincidence? Another part of the mystery is that before I was logged off, I had changed the banner photo on a Groups.io group. Meaning I had visited the main page. Normally, I read the group mail via my e-mail, and I suspect many of the subscribers do as well. After changing the banner photo, I sent a special notice to the group members to visit the home page now and than to see the new pic.I would like to tell them that by doing so, they stay logged in, but that is uncertain. Can all this mystery be solved? Sorry about the long message, and there is a possibility that my time-line is wrong. So I plan to record the date the banner was changed on the home page, wait 28 days and visit the home page again, then see if I get logged off. If not then the appropriate action is to visit the home page every few weeks. Thanks for reading this far! -- Richard |

If the left-side menu item is missing, such that you can't get to the Calendar at all, you're probably logged out. Look for a "Log In" button at upper right (on the blue menu bar) and click on it to re-login. You need to do this every 30 days, or whenever you delete your browser cookies. If it's a PDF file and you are using the Edge browser, the "Couldn't Open PDF" message you might be seeing affects only the display of the thumbnail image in the dialog box. If you click on the "Add" button anyway, it should still go. See /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/23176361#10036?for a screenshot and discussion. Or you could be out of storage space or any number of other things. I hope this helps...if not, we will need more details on what kind of file you're uploading, its size, and what kind of response groups.io is giving you as you attempt the upload. Re: Batch Update Moderators
#moderation

Is there any way to request this feature as an update? I have a number of moderators for my group and its subgroups, and it'd be awesome to do it in a batch.?

Once you get the primary group transfer started (without the files), I'd probably wait a couple of days and then go ahead and initiate the files transfer to the subgroup, too. The two days should be more than enough time to Direct Add the subscribers to your subgroups before the files arrive. Assuming that the transfers occur in queue order, this should save you some time waiting for the files. In the unlikely event that the transfers go out of order and the files arrive too early (i.e.: without proper file ownership assignments), no harm done -- just delete them and do it again. Good luck! Thanks so much Shal,
I'm starting the process now.? Exclude the files from this transfer, unless you want copies in the primary as well as the specific subgroup. Re: Adding a group of members to multiple subgroups at one time
Beth,
Exclude the files from this transfer, unless you want copies in the primary as well as the specific subgroup.
If your group has more than 1000 members it is easiest to do this from the Groups.io group after the transfer. Probably better to use this list anyway, to avoid complication with bouncing members.
For this purpose, only the email address is needed, one per line. The Display Name for each member will have already been set by the transfer, and the display name in each subgroup will perforce be the same as in the primary group.
Excluding the members this time. Looks good. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Many thanks to both of you.
To summarize exactly what I need to end up with: I have a group in yahoo that has members and files that I need in GIO I have one main group in GIO with 3 subgroups that need to start with the same members in all 3 subgroups One of those subgroups also needs the files. I think what I'm hearing is that I should:

Re: Transfer phpBB Forum to Groups.io?
Drew, Is it possible to have a phpBB forum transferred to Groups.io? There is no automated "easy group transfer" for that type of forum, but generally support is able to import a list of email addresses as members if you can extract that from the forum in a text file (one per line). Support can also import messages in mbox format, if you can get the forum content out in that form, or convert it to that form. Re: Adding a group of members to multiple subgroups at one time
Beth, I'm getting ready to finally transfer my main Yahoo group over, and I need to add the members to 3 different subgroups (files and such to only 1 of them).? Do an initial transfer that copies all of the Y!Group members into the primary group.
True, but it does after the transfer. You can bulk add batches of members to selected subgroups by doing a Direct Add in the primary group. You'll get an error result for the Add to the primary group (already a member), but each given address will be added to the subgroup(s) checked off in the Direct Add form. With my 600-member PTA group I was able to put 100 into one subgroup and 500 into another subgroup with just two Direct Add operations (I copied the email addresses in from an Excel sheet where I organized them into which be added to which subgroup). If all of the Y!Group content goes into one subgroup and not the primary then you can specify that as a separate transfer - but do it after you've transferred the members and Direct Add'ed them into that subgroup. Re: Adding a group of members to multiple subgroups at one time
Beth,
A better general description of what you plan to do might help us figure out a better option.? Will everyone be a member of one of the subgroups?? Will that be the subgroup where you want the files? There's some basic information for direct adding many people to the main group at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo, but it may apply to a subgroup as well.? You could do that after the transfer. Re: Adding a group of members to multiple subgroups at one time
Thanks Duane.?
Interesting suggestion. My concern is having to manually add over 400 people to multiple subgroups; no matter if 2 or 3. Yes the files need to go to a subgroup so I¡¯m not sure what adding them only to the main group will achieve. Fortunately we are a premium group, but that doesn¡¯t help during the transfer. ?I¡¯d give a lot to have a bulk add...... Thanks Beth |

I really do want to understand your point... esp if my suggestion makes no sense in light of it. By my understanding we can "visit" Gio daily and while there see a list of all the groups we own and/or belong to by doing nothing more than visiting Gio with our web browser... no password entry via keyboard required... all courtesy of a cookie with a 1-month expiration period that isn't reset upon each "visit." When that cookie expires in a month, visiting Gio results in a view that doesn't show owned and subscribed groups so the visitor thinks he's been dropped from all his groups. At this point he either "logs in" using his registered email address and password (if he has one) or he requests a log-in link that if followed sets a new cookie that expires in a month. My suggestion is to retain all of this EXCEPT the cookie expiration date would be updated upon each "visit" to Gio so that a regular visitor would never find himself "dropped from group." Jim H |
