Re: Logging In and Setting a password

Hi

That login URL was new to me! Thanks.

However there are two things not said that I think should be -

- first, it should say that it is easy for group members to login. You have: ?Groups.io makes it simple and free to log in ¡ª you don't even need a password.?
Perhaps say "group members don't even need a password"?

- second, this is something that explains a lot - I think it should say "your email address is your account ID". That's why you can't just use any of your email addresses, why you can't send from other addresses without an alias. ?Even the simple statement might provide an "aha" moment!?

Both these are just suggestions, of course!?

Re: Logging In and Setting a password

Bob,

Sure, use/or not.
Ok. I've made (a slightly embellished version of) your instructions the "How to log in to your groups" item in Quick Start. And put my lengthier tome back under Advice.

I couldn't help myself, I added a couple brief paragraphs of supplementary information with links after the four steps. Hopefully without impairing the perceived simplicity of the process.

Re: transfer files aso to Groups

Cees,

Just export from yahoo an CVS file , but when I want to upload it to
Groups nothing happens.
"Ralph Mellish, a file clerk at an insurance company, was on his way to work as usual. When [dramatic chord]... nothing happened."

-- Monte Python

Can you give us some detail on what you tried, and what did or did not happen?

You mention a CVS file. Was it exported from a Y!Group database table, and were you trying to create a Database in Groups.io from it? If so, see if this Wiki page helps:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Databases

Or were you actually on the Files page of your Groups.io group? Did you click the blue Upload File button? Did you use the Browse button to find your file on your computer? Did you click the Add button add the file to your group? If so, see if this Wiki page helps. Note that selecting and uploading a single file works just the same:

Re: Facebook group embeded link?

If it's a simple URL and you want to insert a corresponding anchor tag:
  • Highlight the region of the message that you want to make clickable
  • Click the "Insert/edit link" button on the toolbar, and
  • Paste the URL in the resulting popup box.
If you instead have been provided with raw html ready for pasting into a web site, try changing the editor to "Source Code mode" as follows:
  • Click the far-right icon that says "Show Advanced Toolbar"
  • Click the far-right icon on the resulting toolbar that says "Source Code."
  • A square box will pop up showing your existing message in html.
  • Find the location to insert your custom code, paste it in, and close the box with the X at upper right.
Note that groups.io considers some html constructs (iframes, scripting languages, etc.) as potential vectors for malware. Although it might display fine when you switch back out of Source Code mode, it's possible that what you want will be stripped out when you save it. So be prepared for frustration along those lines.

Good luck,
Bruce?

Re: using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

Shal, Chris and Duane,

?

yes, in the email version which I received in my mail account it does list the owner addy behind my name. But as you remarked, this doesn?t change the issue: group members were supposed to get Christmas greetings from all of us moderators, not just from me alone.

?

I obviously forgot the discussion about this issue or thought it was fixed.

?

Well, we must live with it now.

?

I wish all of you wonderful Christmas days, and I do thank you for your constant and reliable engagement!

Victoria; further to Duane's reply it would be worth your having a look at the email version of your Test Post sent out by Groups.io; I would expect it to show your Display Name (Victoria) followed by<owner...> etc after it, rather than your own personal email address.

What your screen shots show is exactly the point that was under discussion last April, so I very much doubt if it is down to anything you have done (or left undone) in your group settings.

Mark is away until 3rd January so there is no point in rushing to post anything on beta in the next few days. I'll try to rework my beta post of last April and post the draft here to see what reaction it gets on GMF before submitting it on beta.

No, that's what happens, unfortunately, and is what Shal and Chris have been discussing.? I also feel that it shouldn't be listed under the personal Display Name of the poster in this case.? Nor should the personal DN show in the Edit trail.

Shal,

I made screen shots. As you can see, I chose the owners addy (sorry, it?s so huge):

And this is how it showed in the group. It doesn?t even show the owner?s adress. So maybe I?ve got s.th. wrong in the settings?

Re: Transferring large group to groups.io #transfer #bigtent

Sue,

When I loaded the first group of people, I hit the direct add limit rather quickly. Suggestions for how to add all of our members without hitting that limit ...

It isn't actually a limit. It is a threshold above which approval is required (an anti-spmmer measure). Normally the approval comes through within hours, but this being the holidays it may take longer.

Go ahead and load all 1200 into the Direct Add page - they'll get added once the approval happens.

Transferring large group to groups.io #transfer #bigtent

Hi everyone - I'm in the process of moving a rather large group (1,200 members) over to groups.io from BigTent. I have my membership list and I paid to upgrade to 2nd tier service. When I loaded the first group of people, I hit the direct add limit rather quickly. Suggestions for how to add all of our members without hitting that limit - is there another way to load our members in the first time without going through the direct add feature?

Thanks!

Re: Spam to owner account--how to stop?

Jim,

I did not want to mark it as spam even though it is, because I would
not want to get bumped from my own list for marking a message as spam.
So far at least you're probably safe with Gmail. I don't fret much when an +owner message lands in my Spam folder there, if it actually is a spam message, though I admit I haven't marked any as spam either.

What avenues are available to put an end to the spam to the owner
account?
You can change your subscription so that you aren't sent +owner messages from non-members, but in some cases that kind of defeats the purpose of the address. I usually recommend that at least one active moderator in the group accept messages from anyone.

Given that you use Thunderbird (as do I) it is probably safe to mark them as Spam in its interface. But with IMAP I'm not totally sure that doesn't get reported up to the server. It may depend on what you tell Thunderbird to do with it. If you have Thunderbird move it to a Junk folder in Local Folders that's probably invisible to Gmail, but having it moved to Spam in your server account might be equivalent to marking it in the Gmail web interface.

Spam to owner account--how to stop?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

About a month ago one list I co-manage started getting a lot of spam,? mostly Finnish but not strictly all from a Finland domain.? We get several per day.? I did not want to mark it as spam even though it is, because I would not want to get bumped from my own list for marking a message as spam.

What avenues are available to put an end to the spam to the owner account?

Thank you.

Shal; thanks for posting the above and what preceded it; it saved me the trouble! We have been out this evening (UK time!) so I wasn't able to follow it up earlier.

Having thought about it I wonder if it might be better if instead of selecting the email address from which the message will be sent, Owners & Moderators had the choice of Personal ID or Owner ID, with Groups.io automatically choosing the relevant email address.

The point about Messages sent from <[email protected]> should identify from which Owner/Moderator... has some validity, but surely that can be resolved by appending the actual originators "signature" at the end. Sometimes "we" sign off with all 3 names to demonstrate that we do actually speak with one voice.

Given that Mark is now on holiday perhaps we can arrive at some "recommendation" to post on beta over the next few days. Given that the original suggestion back in April seems to have slipped through a crack or two I would like to see these matters sorted out, including the ability to Reply in a thread as an Owner / Moderator.

Re: Automated Member Count

Many of my members send me email addresses of friends who have asked them how to get on the list.? I send an invite, and if they go to the site from that link, it's their first time there.? Also, many use the +subscribe address which is published on a couple of web sites.? Obviously there are at least two ways of locating a group without going to the site.

Re: Automated Member Count

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I understand that they can join using the +subscribe email command but that is gotten form the group's home page and under the group member count.
?
So in order for them to get that email address to subscribe, they can look at the group count if they want to.
?
Remember I am like the rest of my members - computer illiterate and only need the simplest features from the group.

Ilene,

?
How else could they join if they are joining out of the blue?
?
If they know the group's email address then they can use the +subscribe email command. They could learn that if, say, a member forwarded a message to them or you publicize that address at other sites or publications.
?
In Ed's case he said he publicizes the group's +owner address in a newsletter so that he can send instructions on joining by email.
?
But I've let my curiosity wander far enough off Ed's original question. Alas, the answer was "no" (but it is a good suggestion).

Re: using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

Michael,

Are messages sent from <[email protected]> also sent to <[email protected]> so that all Owners/Moderators are aware of communications that appear to be in their ¡®name¡¯?

Not automatically. If you send From +owner via the web site there's a checkbox to BCC the message to the +owner address (and hence to all owners/mods).

If you send From +owner via your email you're on your own to CC or BCC the other owners/mods. Sending from your email the site would not otherwise have any way of knowing that you'd sent From the +owner address.

Messages sent from <[email protected]> should identify from which Owner/Moderator

That's an open question of group policy or intent. Some groups prefer that their moderators be seen in a unified way ("the management") and not speaking or addressed as individuals.

At the moment the site is conflicted about this. The Send Message feature sends only the bare +owner address in the From field; the New Topic feature includes the Display Name of the sending moderator (which is Victoria's complaint).

If anything, one might argue that those are backwards. I think perhaps the sending moderator should have both options available in both places (as well as Reply, which doesn't support From +owner at all at the moment).

Re: using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

Well, Michael, the subject you are bringing up relates to our internal group politics, which you can have no insight in and certainly no judgement about. And I do not see what this has to do with my question.
