Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: In the /feed, show next upcoming events, not events that have
been most recently created.
I'm not sure about this one. I guess for members it makes sense. Mods may have preferred to have this as an alternative to monitoring the Activity log for items recently added by members.

CHANGE: Improved the format of the event reminder email.
Apparently this one isn't considered an improvement by everyone. See replies to the changelog in beta (link above).

Comments about these are welcome:

BUGFIX: Slack authentication was broken for groups that had
subdomains.
CHANGE: Temporarily disabled new Google Drive authentication, because
Google changed things on their end and broke the integration.
SECURITY: Rate limiting access to the /login page.
CHANGE: Do not include topics tagged with 'no email' hashtags in the
daily summaries.
BUGFIX: In the /feed, don't show database activity for groups you
don't have permission to view.
INTERNAL: Converted source code dependencies to use new Go modules
system.
BUGFIX: Timezones were sometimes not being read correctly from
calendar invites emailed to the group, due to a bug in the
underlying library.
BUGFIX: Pending message viewing would fail if the sender user record
had been deleted.
NEW: Display RSVP status on event popups on the calendar. Also, new
'RSVPed Events Only' button to show only events you've RSVPed to.
NEW: Monday Start checkbox in user preferences and group default sub
settings to indicate that the calendar should start on Mondays
instead of Sundays.

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

Re: Joining Issues

I'd go through everything on the Settings page to make
sure you haven't overlooked something or set it incorrectly.
There are a lot of details to cover when setting up a new
group.

Duane
Also give the system a day or so after you create it to approve the group and get it put into the database of groups. To make sure that's been done, just go to the main page and search for your group. Once it shows up you should be good to sign up new members.

I don't recall hover ever working that way on Like.? It's always required a click.? Anyone else?

Did Hover on Likes Stop Working? #changelog

Gerald Boutin

I now see that hovering over a "Like" no longer shows who made the "Like". This is in both Chrome and MS Edge and happens if the number of likes is 1 or more.

The closest thing I see in changelogs is this, although it does not reference hover functionality.?

Did I miss something where this was being requested? If so, it doesn't hide much, but now one has to click on the "Like" link to see who liked the post. On the other hand, my memory may just be faulty.

Can't be done.? All you can do is insert a link.? To be able to read it in the message, you'd need to format it for that.? That could be some trial and error, but it will basically be html.

Including pdf file in body of message? (Or nicely formatting our newsletters?) #messages #pdf

Sorry if this has been answered before but I've just spent half an hour searching and while I found LOTs of interesting information I didn't find what I needed...

Anyway, I have a newsletter for my group I created in Apple Pages. ?I then exported it as a size reduced pdf file. ?I'd like the pdf file to display in the message body so they don't have to click a link to see it.

Below are the ways I've tried to include info. They might just be a visual salad, sorry. ?Anyway, what's the best way to have a nicely formatted newsletter in groups.io?
Gina

First is use the link button (but it just includes a link, like below. Not what I want):

Second is use the Picture button (but it only includes page 1 of the pdf file like below):

Third is use the attachment button (then it shows up at the end of the email....)

Copy and paste the pages file (but it just becomes a stacked mess..0

Re: Promoting One's Groups.io Group #howto

Marcio,

So far I have removed the ad about my group from my sig because I don't know whether I can post it here along with my messages. Can I?

Yes. Refer to GMF's Guidelines:
... Listing your groups in your signature is perfectly acceptable, but just make sure there's also on-topic content in your post.

This brings up another question . . . I have added a tagline to one of my Groups.io group's signature. The it three single spaced lines, thus:

==
Paul M.
CostaRicaLiving
/g/CostaRicaLiving
==

That's all well and good, a simple announcement with name of my other group plus a URL for it.

But when I hit send (as you will note down below) it always shows up double spaced which is clumsy and I have to edit it each time to be single spaced. [ sigh ]

I've tried different settings in my subscription for the IO group that displays my sig/tagline but it always reverts to being double spaced! How to format this sig/tagline to be single spaced, please? Of course I can always do a manual copy & paste, but that gets old fast.

Suggestions welcome. (Now you can see just below how my sig/tagline keeps showing up double spaced.)

Linda,
Change your Display Name for that group to whatever you want folks to see.
So, I would have to change my display name on that group to List Owner?
I'm kind of confused because I thought that selecting the owner's email, well, it would show as the owner and it would only show my name if I select to send as myself (that is, with my own email address).
Then again I don't know what the system use as the name on the welcome/goodbye/etc emails, so it makes sense, I guess.

Anyway, thanks :)

Posting With the Owner's Email

marcio

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi,
Yesterday I made a poll and today I've closed it, so I wanted to make the members aware of the results.
I've created a new topic with the "from owner" option selected.
The email is shown correctly, [email protected]. However, in the "from" field I can still see my name along with the owner address.
Is there any way of hidding my name and leaving just the group's name or something like that when posting with the owner's email?

Thanks a lot, as always.
?
Cheers,

Paul,
I have heard that there are some ways to do that , such as with keywords that browsers like Google, etc., will look for when someone does sa search for groups like ours, but I do not know how to go about getting a browser like Google to find those words and make a hit on our group so people will see that we are available.
You've already answered your question :) depending on your group's name, Google will show it up more easily.
For example, I have a very specific group and just searching for "group name groups.io" shows my group just on the first result.
So that's my suggestion. Choose a name that won't leave space for other results, or at least lots of them, and Google should list your group as you are wanting to.

By the way,
So far I have removed the ad about my group from my sig because I don't know whether I can post it here along with my messages. Can I?

Re: Promoting One's Groups.io Group #howto

Bonnie,

Yahoo groups had a lot of groups set up for the purpose of promoting
groups. ...
Is something like that permissible on IO?
Yes. That would not violate the ToS, so it would be up to the group owner(s) whether that would be allowed, or even be the purpose of the group.

Searching for "advertise groups" turned up some attempts, but none of them seem viable at a glance:
/g/AdsAdsAds
/g/Advertise
/g/jojosadsplace
/g/newsletter-adz
/g/PurpleAds

Many of them have private archives, which seems... counterproductive.

Re: Promoting One's Groups.io Group #howto

Donald,

I've been using a tagline on my emails with the name and URL of the group and have seen a few interested visits.

As to Facebook, I steer clear of it as much as possible due to its aggressive penchant for harvesting personal information which has happened to me on a couple of occasions ¨Cand I'm not a FB user and only an accidental visitor!

What I'd very much prefer to learn is how to get a high 'hit position' on a search site like Google, which some groups which are very similarly named to my group seem to have been able to do.

Cheers!

Have you considered mentioning the group on Facebook in a post by you?
Have your friends spread the word and see what happens.

I am about to do that with a new group on groups.io since the original
group on Yahoo is closing down as of today, but there may be interest
out there if we can find it and reel it in. Since it's about the
health of cats and their veterinary care, and many people have cats,
it just might be something that mentioning on Facebook can spread the
word.

I've already contacted the original group's only remaining moderator
about this and am waiting for her reply before just forging ahead and
starting the new group, even though the group itself is already made
and waiting for something to do with it.

Yahoo has/had the benefit of what I think was a better way of
advertising groups with their directory. I've not found the directory
on GIO to bring in many people to new groups. My sig line on my emails
brings in a few amateur radio operators to my Icom group, but I'm not
going to add a line for each group I own.

Donald
