Re: Concerning Databases
Victoria,
I'm still experimenting w/Databases. I learned yesterday that there is a large difference in time required to upload a fairly large database (greater than 450 and growing) between Free groups and Premium/Enterprise groups.?? While that database times out and I have to eventually ask for a login link on my Premium group it loads in less than 2 seconds on one of my free groups. I think that's because the Premium group defaults to Map mode and each map point must be calculated. I plan on writing a support request that for Databases that would include a normal default to List mode and a switch for the owner to select either or both modes as well as the initial default for each database plus a couple more items like an option to define the record index number increment between records and a way to reset the index number.? And probably a couple more items in that vein. -- Bob Bellizzi |
Re: Amount of time to send emails
Dave,
?
As to the activity in my account, the most recent successful delivery was 3:17 AM (time zone = mine or Groups.io's?), ?
Times displayed on Groups.io web pages are translated to your time zone (as set in your account Preferences page). Unless they're inside a message body or other member-provided content.
?
?
the most recent bounces were July 29 which were marked 'throttled' by Comcast, which sounds like what you mentioned.? ?
Yup. And I believe that if they're showing now as bounces that means they were throttled so long that Groups.io gave up on delivering them.
?
?
It's now an hour and a half and still haven't seen the other email. ?
It may be "throttled" or otherwise deferred at the moment. I don't think Groups.io will update the reporting until the message's fate is determined (accepted, rejected, or deferred past Groups.io's retry limits).
?
?
And Comcast hasn't completly blocked Groups.io, or I wouldn't have gotten the 'message needs approval' emails, would I? ?
Correct. And I think we'd be hearing more complaints about it, or Mark would post something in beta about it (as has happened in the past) -- he watches for general deliverability issues.

Did you go online and check your subscription to make sure you were set to receive all emails?

Re: Amount of time to send emails
Dave,
? Comcast is notorious for or sometimes outright blocking messages from Groups.io. If enough of their customers complain maybe they'll whitelist Groups.io, or whatever they need to do, to ensure prompt and reliable delivery. Check your Recent Bounces page (in your Account) periodically to see if Comcast has also rejected some of the messages sent to you from Groups.io. That page includes all of your group subscriptions (you also have an Email Delivery History tab in each group's Subscription page). Re: Member welcome
Hi Shal
I thought I sent this response days ago, but got interrupted and now not sure. Not seen message come through. I have checked Settings and deleted all other notices.? Have personally left the group and rejoined to test the new member welcome message activity. We do not require approval for membership, so folks are in automatically.? Upon request to join, this page of the web is immediately brought up.? In our custom message we ask that they fill out their auto signature as part of the registration process. This auto message is end-running our message as evidenced by the number of non-signed posts and emails we get from new members. Thanks for any further thoughts you have. Nancy C ECIR Group Mod |
Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?
Chris, It may well be that these adddresses are being disabled by Yahoo because of lack of use, but that has to mean that the addresses aren't being used for anything else either, which is slightly puzzling. It was (is?) a common misconception that one must use a Yahoo Mail address in order to participate in a Yahoo Group. It was true (almost always) that creating a Yahoo Account so that you could access group web pages automatically created for you a Yahoo Mail address, which if you did nothing further became your subscribed email address for your groups. Many never figured out how to set a non-Yahoo mail address for their group subscription while retaining the ability to access the web pages via their Yahoo Account. One consequence is that many people had two subscriptions, one with the Yahoo Mail address that they used for web access, and one with their preferred email address that they used to receive and post by email. This was a somewhat undesirable circumstance (the unused Yahoo Mail address would go fallow and start bouncing after a month or two, and that subscription didn't have ownership of the messages posted by the email subscription), but in the last few years the sheer required to correctly set a non-Yahoo email address for your Y!Group subscription became too much for many to overcome. The other consequence, of course, is that many people simply used the Yahoo Mail address for Yahoo Groups and little or nothing else. Amount of time to send emails
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýNot really a problem, but more curiosity. As owner of a group, I just received moderated message notices for a post (which I approved by email) and a reply from another moderated member (which I approved via the website). Both messages appeared almost instantly on the website, but I have yet to receive either by email. On two different email clients. And yes, I have manually refreshed both. It has now been 25 minutes and 10 minutes, respectively. ? And interestingly, I also noticed in that amount of time an attempted email from a non-member of the group in the same topic/thread. ? Not end of the world stuff; just looking for others¡¯ insight. ? Dave Grimm [email protected] owner ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? |

Yahoo addresses make up about 28% of our membership, but 75% of those listed as bouncing. This must point to something but quite what it points to isn't entirely clear! It may well be that these adddresses are being disabled by Yahoo because of lack of use, but that has to mean that the addresses aren't being used for anything else either, which is slightly puzzling. I know (if only from anecdote) that some people use a proliferation of different email addresses for different applications but to me that always looks like a recipe for confusion, starting with trying to access Groups.io from a "wrong" email address. I am a little bewildered by some of the points raised in the original post; I know that some people are simply not tech - savvy, but it would appear that they are sufficiently savvy to be able to have more than one email address. Out of interest, how many "lost" members would expect to be able to recover because you know of their second email addresses, and what percentage of the total does that represent? Chris |
Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?
Victoria,
No. Their initial logon and setting of the password would have had to have been done while the old email address was still active and they could receive the required confirmation email from Groups.io. As I admitted, that's probably a rare circumstance for these members.
Of course. Their new subscription is just like any other new member.
I suspect the majority of active Yahoo Mail addresses are still working fine. But as Bruce mentioned Yahoo Mail does cull accounts that are not signed into for a long time, I think it is a year.
