Transfer ? - Members Jumping the Gun

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Folks,

?

New to Groups.io ¨C was a long time member of EL-M.? I¡¯m bitterly regretting not having kept up because I¡¯m dancing as fast as I can but still losing ?? I¡¯ve been reading here for the last couple of days but am overwhelmed.

?

We have a couple of groups ¨C including a large one ¨C we¡¯re transferring to GIO from Y!G.? We did our prep work as best as we could, including sending a couple of ADMIN Special Notice.? The second one included the info that we¡¯ve started the actual transfer process and to please be patient while everyone & everything gets transferred.

?

Not everyone reads, and not everyone follows directions.? Shocking, I know.

?

My question is this:? for the members who weren¡¯t patient & have jumped the gun & joined the new GIO, what happens when our membership eventually gets transferred?? Will they have double membership?? What about things like posting permissions?? For the new GIO, we have new members moderated for the first three posts; the old Y!G was set to moderate new members which we manually switched after a few posts when possible.

?

Here's a scenario.? Harry was a longstanding member of the old Y!G who was no longer moderated.? Harry jumped the gun & joined the new GIO group where new members are moderated for the first three posts while the transfer was in process.? Assuming he used the same email address, which posting permissions will he have?

?

TIA,

Saundra

2 questions about the Yahoo group transfer

Harm Selling

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi all,

1. Last Friday (5 days ago) I requested a transfer for my Yahoo group.Last Saturday (4 days ago) I've given the go-ahead.
How long is the actual waiting time for finishing the transfer?

2. The member list of my group has a lot of members with the status "No mail". I'm afraid most of these members are not active anymore. Do these members receive a welcome message by joining Group.io? And if that message bounces, are these bouncing accounts automatically removed or do they automatically get the status "bouncing"?
If not¡. What's the best way to check and clean up these "no mail" accounts? My group contains no-mail accounts from the year 2000, the year of introducing the group, 19 years ago.

Thanking in advance for the answers¡.

You can practice your searching ability using the name.? Or just accept it as fact.?

This is the place to go to complain about the Y!G downgrade and any ongoing issues you may be having with accessing and using the Y!G site.

It is NOT the place to discuss transfer issues -- those should remain here in GMF.

Why am I doing this? Mainly, it's to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in the support groups (like here), which need to remain as high as possible during this difficult time of transition. The new group is unmoderated (except your first message) and I won't be looking over your shoulders very much. Try to keep actual swearing to a minimum...otherwise, have at it and enjoy!

Blank names when users join or get imported translates into postings getting rejected from mail

I noticed that when users did not enter their names when registering or when imported they appear blank.? Many email systems (Lotus Notes and Exchange) will see this as an invalid message.? I have added a dummy name to the person who was having the issue, but it seems that Group.IO should either not allow someone to register with blanks or when composing a posting, it should format it in a way that will be acceptable.? I checked Yahoo, and it allowed blanks, but it required that you use a profile name.? I am wondering if this needs to go to Support or a features mailing list.

Just join and start posting. You do not need an invitation.

Yes... If someone would please start that group and send me an invite... It'd be a good way to take the load off this GroupManagersForum!

As for problems posting on YG. Have you tried the alternative way of posting through the website interface instead of via email?

Be well, Deane

As per email above, can we create a new forum for all us YahooGroups refugees? Apologies for flooding your list with all our freak outs and dramas!

Re: Migrating the Yahoo stragglers

If you make your new Groups.io group a member of the Y!G then any email sent to members will also be sent to the new Group in the normal way. Yes? Or am I wrong?
?
Then when the transfer is done put everyone at Y!G group on moderation and /or no mail. Owner and moderators still get mail and deal with it. This should catch the stragglers and new applicants.
?
OK,
Tony
?

5. Meanwhile, posts stack up in the queue on Y!G.
6. Migration complete.
What happens with all of #5's posts?
Do they migrate as well so they can be approved on GIO, or are they lost or?

I suggest you download the email addresses from Yahoo and upload it at manually and then send a message to all notifying your movement plans

Re: How to xfer yahoo msgs emailed after Oct 28?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

What I did for the short while at changeover was to Auto-Forward the YGroup emails to me,? to my new Groups.io group.

When the move was complete I put all messages at YGroup on Moderation.? I still get a message now and then, usually from people who haven't changed their addressbook.

OK, Tony

Subject : [GMF] How to xfer yahoo msgs emaile

Starting Oct 28, yahoogroups won't save any new content.

That means that new files cannot be uploaded, and no new messages archived.

We have created a new io group, and will soon pay upgrade to premium.

Our plan was to take a week or two, to set up the new empty io group with our custom notices, our own faq, etc. ... and then initiate the procedures for "easy transfer".

I understand that there is high demand, so we might have to wait our turn for the transfer. Totally understandable.

But what happens to any new messages from our members sent to our list after Oct 28th? I understand they won't be archived inside our yahoogroups site. So how could they be transferred to groups.io?

The bottom line is ... for any transfers that happen between Oct 29 and Dec 1st, what happens to any new emails sent to the yahoogroups list during that time before the transfer is finalized? How can these new emails be transferred if they are not added into our yahoogroups message archive?

Would we need to just save them in our regular email inbox, and then find a way to download them into some sort of archive file (I have no idea how)? and then post that into the groups.io?
Hoping there is a simple way to do this.

??

Re: Just checking: 11 digests from GMF in on day? Suggested groups.io Moderator feature?

Huge number of new groups being formed because of YahooGroups. The owners now have deadlines to meet from Yahoo. If you wanted an idea of how busy Groups.io is, go to?/search?p=Created,,,20,2,0,0
Click on newest. And these are just the publicly listed groups!?

About digests -?

Full Featured Digest will group the days messages into batches of 12 and send each batch when the twelvth is posted. Any that remain at the end of the day will be sent as the final (or only) digest of the day. The digests include the full text of each message, omitting any quotes of prior messages.

You could opt for?Daily Summary - ?a once-daily list of topics posted that day. Unlike the digests the summary does not include the text of any of the messages, only the list of topics.?

If you wanted to suggest a feature, you can do this on Beta that Mark watches. However Groups.io staff is hugely busy with the migration of so many groups.?

Just checking: 11 digests from GMF in on day? Suggested groups.io Moderator feature?

Seems that the activity in our group here has greatly increased recently.

I was, when watching the Surge of digests, ?headfirst wondering if I was somehow getting duplicates. But they seem to be genuine separate digests.

?Races two questions, if anyone cares to answer:?

1) What is the cause of the increase? ?Increased migration away from Yahoo with the latest bolix ?there??

2) What determines the number of digests?
At one point, long ago, ?I speculated that the system was designed to generate no more than one every 24 hours.
Doesn¡¯t generate a guy just wants a certain number of posts have accumulated?

Personally, I prefer fewer digests, even if it means they have to be longer and contain more messages in each digest.?

For example, in my lists come as moderator, I would like to set it to one digest per 24 hours, or once a max number of posts have accumulated.

Is that something Group moderators can set?
if not, How do I add it to the suggested enhancements list?
