Re: Upgraded to Premium and THEN saw the notice...

Sally,

If I have paid my premium fee and invited [email protected] to my
yahoo group, is my transfer initiated?
If that's all you've done, no.

Don't miss Step 2 and steps 4 through 6.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

My guess is that mark will treat Steps 2 and 3 together as initiating the transfer, if only because Step 4 requires Groups.io to take a manual step (solve a Captcha) to accept the invitation.

But only Groups.io can give a definitive answer.

What is the definition of "initiated"? ?If I have paid my premium fee and invited [email protected] to my yahoo group, is my transfer initiated?

Thanks,
Sally

Mark hasn't decided on a "hard" date for initiation, only no promises after Dec 1.? From what I've seen him do in the last 5 years, I expect he's going to do everything he can to get as many groups transferred as possible.? He has clearly stated that if you upgrade to Premium and he's unable to do the transfer, he'll gladly refund your money and delete your group for you.

Terri,

Oh brother. so Shal could have a point, they could be overloading
Yahoo's servers and getting in Mark's way.
That was actually Duane's comment, not mine.

I'm not certain that Yahoo does rate limiting by group, in the past it has always been access from a given IP address that gets limited, regardless of how many groups that address was accessing. Rate limiting by group would be problematic, especially back when some groups had hundreds of thousands of active members.

On the other hand, most of what I "know" about Yahoo's internal workings dates from Classic groups - the team that put Neo in place has been much more opaque about the inner workings.

I'm not going to discourage anyone from trying to capture content before it is removed.

Re: Are messages to members saved?

When using the "Send message" function to email a member about a pending post, is the message saved somewhere? I have looked but can't find them. (Of course, this is if it was not BCCed to mods) The "+owner messages" tab on the member's profile does not show anything. Are these messages FROM the member to?+owner?
Not sure exactly what you mean.??Have you checked out Admin, Activity?
If you mean you clicked on reply in the web interface and then made it private, there is an option to check off "BCC me".
If you were rejecting a message and explained why, you will see the reason in Activity.
You asked about +owner messages. Go to your own profile in Members (select moderators) and you can see +owner messages from you.?

Thanks -?
Admin-Activity - I checked all the tabs but none have the message. Just if a message was rejected. But no "send message" from the pending page.
I did not BBC although I should have, which is why I am trying to find the message and know if/where to find them in future. Having them accessible on the web is better than lost in my emails.?
On my own profile, I do not see those kind of messages in any of the tabs either.

I don't know how they archive anything at this point since it's impossible to read messages.? Do we really need their help?? We're all saving our own groups.? ?If this outage is due to their "help," they're doing more harm.? I hope Yaoho can come back long enough for people to get their groups moved here.

Re: Are messages to members saved?

Niman,

When using the "Send message" function to email a member about a
pending post, is the message saved somewhere?
No.

Hence the Bcc checkboxes so that you can save it yourself.

The "+owner messages" tab on the member's profile ... Are these
messages FROM the member to +owner?
Correct.

There was discussion long ago in beta about adding messages from +owner to this tab, or having a more general list of messages to/from the +owner address. That was never acted on.

A volunteer organization.

Their home page says:?Archive Team is a loose collective of rogue archivists, programmers, writers and loudmouths dedicated to saving our digital heritage. Re: Upgraded to Premium and THEN saw the notice...

Webchhk,

1. If Yahoo fixes the outage and transfers start again, because I've
started my process before December 1, 2019, does that mean my group
and subgroup will still be allowed to transfer?
Most likely.

Mark asked that transfer requests be in by December 1st, so that he can be reasonably sure to be able to complete them before Yahoo removes access to the content. Of course, Yahoo outages in the mean time aren't helping.

2. If Yahoo doesn't fix the outage, ... can we request a refund for
going Premium?
Yes. Mark has mentioned this on several occasions.

3. Are there any manual work arounds that anyone knows about? We don't
want to get caught out there after December 14th with all of our
data deleted.
Yes, but if Yahoo is not functioning well those work-around will likely run into the same or similar problems attempting to access the data.

See the FAQ, items 10 & 14:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups

There is also a chrome browser plug-in that is known to produce an mbox file of the correct format for import - it was written by Mark Fletcher himself during development of the transfer agent. However, recently people have reported trouble getting it to run.

(The plan is to ... leave the conversations there as an archive, ...
A rather short-lived archive, given Yahoo's plan is to remove the Conversations along with the other web content.

Hmm, I wonder if that's part of the reason that Mark is having so much trouble?? We all know YG isn't in the best of health and this extra load sure wouldn't help.? One thing he's mentioned that he keeps running into is the rate limiter.? Basically, it's how many times a group can be accessed in a given amount of time, so having this other site backing things up will increase the number of hits.

But do look at this - I am a user ed type, not a programmer, but others may be able to tell you about Lena's workaround.

The problem is what to do with the message archive once downloaded; as there is really no good way to re-upload it to groups.io, to re-link individual messages to their owners, or to provide online message search capability. ?It's not the same as a transfer and loses "ownership", but Lena has a way to get the messages into the archive,?

It's rather impressive.? This group has a few thousand computers activated as a massive effort to retrieve and archive all of YG.? No matter how big or small the group may be.?

As for private groups, they do 1 of 2 things, 1- request membership and then archive or 2- ask from their site for owners and mods to send an invite to the group.?

They are almost at 10% archive status by morning.

There has been some discussion about a program (actually a Perl
script, I think) that can upload messages that are saved in MBOX
format.

/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/yg_privacy_dashboard_download/37953856

It looks complicated but you can try that route. Join the beta group
on GIO to ask questions if you want to try that.

In the link above, there's a download link to the zip file for the
program.

There's also a long list of steps you must go through to make it work
but it will work in Windows, Linux, MAC OS, and I think another OS
also.

Re: Upgraded to Premium and THEN saw the notice...

Thank you Frances, for your reply.?

Yes, I realize this is a peer-to-peer group...I didn't imply Management was here. I'm asking questions to get my bearings as someone going through what we're all going through.

Well, of course, NOW there's a notice on the page I was referencing -- earlier today it was not there. I was referring to this page:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups?
and this page:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

1. Actually, Groups.io has been VERY clear in their communication that if your transfer wasn't initiated by December 1st, the transfer couldn't happen. December 14th is the Yahoo date. So, again, my question is: I've started the process before December 1st, but wasn't able to initiate the transfer due to the Yahoo outage. Obviously, December 1st is tomorrow and this Yahoo outage probably won't be fixed by then -- am I still eligible to do the EasyTransfer after the December 1st date?

See this text: "Due to the pending discontinuation of many parts of Yahoo Groups, we ask that all transfer requests be given the go ahead no later than December 1, 2019. We will not be able to guarantee any transfers submitted after that." and the top of this page:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

2. Thank you for relaying that information and thank you to Mark as well.?

3. Huge thanks for the link to the manual work arounds, clearly it was on the pages I've read before -- but obviously not entirely or I would have seen it. Ugh. There's a LOT to read and process.?

Maybe adding this Yahoo Outage message to the TOP of the instructions page would be a good idea because it's kind of a bummer to go through all the pre-work and Step 1 only to get to Step 2 and not be able to proceed.
First, this is a peer-to-peer help group. No Management here.
Can you tell me which instructions page you mean? The URL please.

1. About the cutoff date - I believe that is only YG's date, not Groups.io?
And of course, you can still start a group here but what is uncertain is whether Groups.io can rescue your archive.

2. Mark has said he would do a refund.?

3. Yes there are manual workarounds. It won't be as pretty - but you can save your posts, etc.
See this FAQ. #10.

BTW, I will put the warning about YG on the top of the FAQ. (We had it there and then took it down when things were okay again.) ?So I am hopeful that this will be fixed too

Upgraded to Premium and THEN saw the notice...

Greetings all:
?
I'm in the process of transferring two YahooGroups -- one as a main group and the second as a subgroup of the main group.
?
I just upgraded my Groups.io group to Premium and I was going through all the instructions as indicated and saw this page:?/yahootransfer?with this?note at the top:
?
Yahoo Groups currently has an outage that is preventing us from transferring groups. We do not know if or when this outage will be fixed. Until it is, we have disabled new group transfer requests. Please do not upgrade your group to Premium until we know that the outage has been fixed. We will announce here when that happens.

Thank you, Yahoo! Not.

My questions are:
?
  1. If Yahoo fixes the outage and transfers start again, because I've started my process before December 1, 2019, does that mean my group and subgroup will still be allowed to transfer?
  2. If Yahoo doesn't fix the outage, (I know no one knows if or when the outage will be fixed), can we request a refund for going Premium? My groups don't have to be Premium groups -- we only shifted to Premium to be eligible for the transfer service.

Thanks in advance for any guidance that can be provided.? I know EVERYONE is working really hard to make this happen and Yahoo isn't exactly cooperative (to say the least!).
