An issue I raised a while back is that someone can join a sub-group (by invitation or approval of sub-group moderator), and hence a main group, without any awareness by the main group moderatorship

Well Pete, I was wrong.* In both cases (ticking the checkbox or applying a hashtag) the Special badge will appear on the pending message and the activity log entry will say "sent special notice."

This seems unlikely. When someone is approved for a subgroup they are automatically added to the main group. A person can, however, have a different Display Name in the subgroup vs the main group. You
