Well, watch me back-pedal. If I log out, the same feed doesn't work. So I think it's still validating me as a member before displaying the messages, either via the /messages display or via the /rss

This is the setting that matters. If you have a private archive, the RSS feed should also be turned off. Check your group's home page to confirm there is no RSS feed link (under "Group Information").
