The default Welcome message is initially defined when you set up the group, before you create any subgroups. No, but you can do it the other way around...edit the Welcome message to match what appears

A file cannot be opened without downloading it. Depending on browser add-ons, it may open as a temp file in a browser, and subsequently be deleted from the cache...but it's still being downloaded

Yes. Use the format: Fname Lname <email address> Fname2 Lname2 <email address2> etc... The file must be plain text , NOT Excel or CSV or anything like that. Be sure to include the angle brackets.
