In his announcement of the change/addition, Mark mentioned that the date format only applies to last year and earlier on the message display.? For this year, it will still show Mmm DD, YYYY.? I just verified that this is the case.

Not sure why you're not seeing 24-hour in creating an event, it works for me.? The one thing I did notice is that the drop downs for Start and End always default to 00:00.

Keep in mind that some of the text in messages (such as the date/time in the quote reference above) is just that...text. Whatever was inserted by groups.io (or someone's email client) at the time it was created will remain unaffected by your account preferences.

Thanks. But well, I just tried to create a new event. But time is selectable only in the am- and pm-format; there is no 24 hour format selectable. Date also still has the old version MM/DD/YYYY just as it did before, although I chose the other option in the settings.

Re: A somewhat unique transfer situation.

Dale,

As to the suggestion below, the PG Offline html generator already does
that by replacing everything following the "@" with "..." effectively
masking the email.
That's not my experience.

Which suggests that you made the archive as a member, not a moderator. That is, I think Yahoo delivered the message content to PG Offline in "fig-leafed" form because the credentials you gave PG Offline were not those of a moderator.

It would be nice to sort them by thread though, but then again threads
can get hijacked with a new topic that would be out of place.
It would be nice to give the viewer the option of Message or Topic view, but that would require something more than a flat HTML file, something more like database-driven page generation.

Maybe you're headed in the direction of PG Online...

Re: Calendar bugs

Duane,

The same could apply to the calendar, but I haven't had a chance to
test it yet. I don't know how difficult it would be to have all time
displays based on a persons setting, such as within posts or events,
but probably not easy.
Everywhere the site displays a time (as opposed to user-text that happens to contain a time) it is already adjusted to the member's timezone. So using the member's format as well shouldn't be a big problem (just a testing chore to be sure Mark got them all).

Events are a bit different in that they have their own timezone. They are shown in the calendar adjusted to the member's local time, but reminder notices are sent with the text showing the event's timezone. I think in the calendar an event should show in the member's format preference as well. For notifications and reminders I'd say the receiving member's format preference should rule, even though their timezone doesn't.

Text within posts, or even the Description field of an event, I think is hopeless - it does not make sense to me to attempt recognizing and reformatting dates and times within user-written text.

I also use 24-hour time.? There are some inconsistencies, such as when quoting a message.? I've thought about mentioning that on beta, but I think it could cause some head scratching when it switched back and forth within the group messages.? In Account/Preferences make sure you also click on the Save Preferences button. This affects all groups when logged in under that account and viewing online.

Re: A somewhat unique transfer situation.

Thanks again, Shal, for your suggestions.? As to the YMMV, sometimes the obvious passes us by.?? I used to handle medical cases as a lawyer and one physician once told me, "When you hear hoofbeats, don't go looking for Zebras."

As to the suggestion below, the PG Offline html generator already does that by replacing everything following the "@" with "..." effectively masking the email.?? I did the first year of messages and got about 329 messages taking up about 1 mb.? The top of the page contains a message index with internal links to the actual message.?? If I put them all on one page, they could be searched by using the "find on page" function.? It would be nice to sort them by thread though, but then again threads can get hijacked with a new topic that would be out of place.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: User preferences for date and time display formatting.
Yay! Finally ISO dates (YYYY-MM-DD) are supported, and a 24-hour clock, for those so inclined. The choices are in your Account preferences, coming soon to your group's Default Sub Settings (in the same way as Time Zone, I assume).

Mark is still looking for reports of quirks and bugs related to this change, so if you feel like exploring turn on those options and poke around. Looks like Michael and Duane nailed one today:

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Lock icons are now displayed for locked groups in the Your Groups
list, the My Groups page and the Subgroups page.
NEW: Support '´ð¸´:' as an indicator in the subject of a message
reply.
NEW: 'Ban Sender' button when viewing a pending message sent from a
non-member.
INTERNAL: Changed many operations that relied on Amazon S3 to make
them more reliable in the face of intermittent issues with S3
lately.
INTERNAL: Wrote a new utility to maintain the nginx domain config
files.
NEW: Work on preventing spam signups.

Please call out any you find significant.

Yes, Mark saw the notes we put on beta and fixed it about 1600 CDT.

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

Chris,

Seems silly to set up an indexed page containing nothing more than a
link to the GMF wiki!
True. You could surround the link with some group-specific introductory matter or anything else you want to say on the subject. Or, like GMF, you could abandon the index page in favor of a hand-crafted home page.

Re: A somewhat unique transfer situation.

Dale,

I am not sure Mark would be interested in getting our messages loaded,
considering his other concerns at this time.
You never know. If he's still working through a backlog of Y!Groups he might put you in the queue or just wait until things settle down.

What I was hoping for is a way to simply post my album with its
contents intact without having to create the album on groups.io and
then load it. With 260 albums, this is a bit of work.
Ah. Something that could be done if Mark built an importer that could take a (zip of a) PG Offline folder, starting at the .db3 files and including all the subfolders. Unfortunately I think he has said that he is not going to do that (anytime soon).

If it were documented you might be able to put your album folders and metadata (owner, dates, etc.) in the format Mark uses to capture Y!Group data, then it wouldn't be much work on his end to import it. I know he puts the metadata into json files, one per photo and one per album, so maybe some scripting could do the job, if one can figure out how to get the metadata out of PG Offline's database.

I checked the Yahoo site and it is a public group, so I don't think
this would be an issue.
Cool. Then at least putting them on a public web page wouldn't be violating anyone's privacy. You might want to redact or "fig-leaf" any email addresses in message bodies, to mimic the behavior of Yahoo Groups.

I am not familiar with the acronym YMMV. I assume that the Y is Yahoo
and the V is violation, but what is in between?
Nothing so scary: Your Mileage May Vary - just meaning that the general statement might apply differently or not at all to different circumstances.

Re: Calendar bugs

Hi, I'm a newbie on Groups.io and on this forum.? I had the same issue with the calendar yesterday.? Start time drop-down menu worked fine, but end time in some strange military time format that wouldn't work.? I found that I was able to manually type in the time (ex. 4:30pm) and it worked fine.

I just checked the calendar function and it seems to be corrected as of right now.

Thanks,
Maureen

Each view has a different URL, so one work-around is to bookmark the Messages view in your browser. That's what I do for GMF.

Yes, I suspect the End code got switched, though not the default display.? I went ahead and added this info to the thread on beta.? Mark is supposed to take weekends off, but he sometimes notices things like this and fixes them, especially after a big code change.

The system remembers which view you normally use.? The only gotcha is that if you choose a group from the overview page, /, it reverts to the Topic view because it's hard-coded on those links.? The suggestion has been made that this be changed to use the user preference, but I don't think a decision was ever made.
