Seeking a Tutorial for new users
Deborah Armstrong
I own one group and moderate another. In both cases we have a mixture of technically savvy users and people who are completely clueless about computers.
I am seeking a good tutorial, preferably on Youtube on how to use the rich features of Groups.IO. My unskilled users can read and reply to emails and that's about it. They keep needing posts to be repeated so they can read them, because they don't know how to use the online features to read previous posts, search the archives or skim through threads. Also they don't know how to use the wiki or files area, let alone the other features. I'm visually impaired so I'd appreciate if someone else finds a good tutorial, since I won't know for sure if the video portion is clear enough to easily follow.? I have prepared an audio tutorial on using Groups.IO for visually impaired users which I can share with anyone who needs it for their group members who have this disability. --Debee |
Re: Inviting Members
Deborah Armstrong
I am thinking it might be a completely different problem. I was helping my Mom yesterday with something unrelated which made me realize this.
If you are a sophisticated user you have an email client. So a "sendmail" link opens that client with the email address already filled in and you are ready to type your email, or in the case of an invite to just hit send. But .. if you are less sophisticated, you don't even know what an email client is. You log in to gmail , UVerse, At&T, comcast, hotmail? or Yahoo and read your mail. Mail is a web experience, not an experience with a client program or app. So when they encounter the sendMail link, nothing happens. I think Chrome has add-ons that will summon Yahoo or gmail,? but assuming this is an unsophisticated user, they have whatever browser came with their computer. When Mom clicked on a SendMail link, her computer fired up Windows Live mail which is depricated and it was asking her to enter account information -- completely unintuitive for an unsophisticated user. When I click on a sendMail link on my new laptop,? Windows 10 mail (trusted store app!)? launches too inviting me to create an account, but I'm experienced so I just have to change my default email client to the desktop Outlook which is what I have installed. Not sure why Windows didn't do that for me, but that's Microsoft for you! At work our department's Chromebook launches gmail when I click on a sendMail link. So maybe it's as simple as software not knowing what to do on a particular platform when a user clicks. --Debee ? |

I'm trying to migrate a Wikispaces site and have its many pages in exported HTML format with their relative links to image and non-image files in the relative folder "files/" which corresponds very nicely to the root of the Groups.io Files area to which I have batch uploaded them. Although G.io does not support batch upload of messages, I can paste the HTML code from an exported page into the message editor's source code window and the message is done - images display (may need to resize) and file links work on the website. I really don't want to have to upload them to each message. Am I missing something? Maybe I'm just barking up the wrong platform but I have yet to find the silver bullet.? |

Re: Group Transfer Question - Two Groups.IO Memberships
Okay, so we have a new wrinkle with some of our transferred list members that have created a second Groups.io account and are submitting these duplicate Membership requests: Some of them were using old email addresses on Yahoo that are no longer accessible. So, they cannot sign into their transferred account because they will not be able to access the auto email that is sent requesting a link to create a password. I am wondering if they could sign in using the newer account, request the password link to create a password for that account, then somehow merge the older transfer account with their newer account? ?Our list members use our list sections pretty heavily (Photos, Files, DB, etc. ), so it¡¯s important to fully create an account so they can get to our list home page. And, it would be nice for them to have ALL their groups.io groups listed on their home page when logged in. Can someone tell me how that might be accomplished?
?Also, we have a smaller set of list members that were using two different email addresses on Yahoo with different groups, and now they¡¯ve been transferred twice to Yahoo Groups with those old Yahoo lists, this creating two different groups.io accounts. If those folks try to merge their two accounts, I am assuming one of the lists will lose their old message history? -- Patty S. |

Re: Calendar bugs
Checking things for me, on adding (or editing) event I see dates and times in ISO date and 24 hour as expected/wanted/set in profile. For event times the default (pre-entered but overtypeable) to the give the current hour (i.e now, as I enter this at 10:07, from 10:00 to 11:00), with dropdown (if I use it rather than typing in directly) starting from 00:00. I'm happy with this - it's more or less what I expect. And when I click on the event (in the calendar, having added it), the date appears in 'long' format with 24-hour format time (Monday, June 25th, 2018 10:00 to 11:00) - I'm happy, but wondering why that date format? Does it come from a groups.io setting, or somewhere in my computer locale settings?
But hovering over the event, so I get a pop-up, some curiosities: For short (1 hour) event within a day just the times (e.g. 10:00 - 11:00), with no date (whether today or not), and for zero time length events. For short (1 hour) event straddling midnight both dates and times (eg 2018-06-25 23:30 - 2018-06-26 00:30) For all day events, date and to following date, eg 2018-but 06-25 - 2018-06-26 for event all day today (25th) - this I consider incorrect, as distinct from a bad choice - but probably down to the end time being stored as 00:00 on D+1, not 24:00 on D. So correct (expected) formats, but not what I would like and hope to have: date (always) and times - but for zero duration events, only the one time, for single day events just the one date, and for multi day all day events ending on the final day, not the following one. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDuane, thans for answering. Since I didn?t see my name in your anser I didn?t recognize at first that it was your answer to me. ?

As I told Bruce, the calender still has this am and pm thing even if you want to create a new event as I tried to yesterday. ? You wrote: I don't know how difficult it would be to have all time displays based on a persons setting, such as within posts or events, but probably not easy. Dale,
I don't care how I got there, the result is what I need. How you got there tells me something about what tools are available to you. No use suggesting things you can't do. There are no moderators, 1 owner who is locked out (and I assume wouldCorrect. Probably. If he can't sign in then chances are that PG Offline would have no better luck presenting those same credentials. The one possibility would be if his inability to sign in has to do with browser issues or something other than not knowing his ID or password or his account being disabled for some reason. Having hosted groups is nice in theory, but what happens when theTrue. Succession planning would be even more important with self-hosted software like PG Online, or a Mailman list, or the similar options out there. And a bit more selective, as the next in line would need to be able to handle the technology. Our newly created groups.io group has 30 members. The Yahoo group hadIf you were a moderator you could export the members list from the Y!Group, and then use Direct Add to bring them all into the Groups.io group. On the Upgrade page click on View/Change Plan. One of the options there is the Group Transfer plan (Premium For One Month). That would allow you to use Direct Add a single $10 payment for a month's usage. Or you could do that anyway, with all the email addresses you happen to have. That might be just people who posted, if you kept emails from the group. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

As to the suggestion below, the PG Offline html generator already doesThat's not my experience. Which suggests that you made the archive as a member, not a moderator. That is, I think Yahoo delivered the message content to PG Offline in "fig-leafed" form because the credentials you gave PG Offline were not those of a moderator. It would be nice to sort them by thread though, but then again threadsIt would be nice to give the viewer the option of Message or Topic view, but that would require something more than a flat HTML file, something more like database-driven page generation. Re: Calendar bugs
Duane,
The same could apply to the calendar, but I haven't had a chance toEverywhere the site displays a time (as opposed to user-text that happens to contain a time) it is already adjusted to the member's timezone. So using the member's format as well shouldn't be a big problem (just a testing chore to be sure Mark got them all). Events are a bit different in that they have their own timezone. They are shown in the calendar adjusted to the member's local time, but reminder notices are sent with the text showing the event's timezone. I think in the calendar an event should show in the member's format preference as well. For notifications and reminders I'd say the receiving member's format preference should rule, even though their timezone doesn't. Text within posts, or even the Description field of an event, I think is hopeless - it does not make sense to me to attempt recognizing and reformatting dates and times within user-written text.
