Re: Files moved but are empty

Ilene,

At first it appeared that the files moved fine.
They did but they were all empty.
That's unfortunate. Something must have gone wrong when the transfer agent attempted to collect the file content.

You may be able to re-try the transfer later (leaving just the File section checked in the list of areas to transfer). Hopefully Yahoo's servers will be working better then.

There is no place to add the message that the file contains.
In groups IO - does the file message go directly in the description
area?
No, the content should be in the file. The description text is only for a description of the file content.

Re: AOL e-mail and the Oath pledge and SPAM unsubscription

Oh that's a dandy -

"JURY TRIAL WAIVER. IF FOR ANY REASON A DISPUTE PROCEEDS IN COURT RATHER THAN THROUGH ARBITRATION, YOU AND OATH AGREE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE A JURY TRIAL. YOU AND OATH UNCONDITIONALLY WAIVE ANY RIGHT TO TRIAL BY JURY IN ANY ACTION, PROCEEDING OR COUNTERCLAIM IN ANY WAY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS. IN THE EVENT OF LITIGATION, THIS PARAGRAPH MAY BE FILED TO SHOW A WRITTEN CONSENT TO A TRIAL BY THE COURT."

Big capital letters in bold.

I have my doubts that clause can stand in the face of US law.?

I just signed into my AOL account and it did nag me about the new TOS. I clicked "I'll do this later" and it let me in. If it ever won't bypass that I will not use that account, just let it remain on their books. Maybe I'll give the address out to a bunch of spammers to keep them busy.

At any rate, my advice is to just get a gmail account. They don't try to give you the news, they redirect you to basic HTML if you have an old browser, which is absolutely fine with me. If I want more features I will seek them out. Their privacy agreement is more like a not privacy agreement. If they all start this, I will see if someone with a server who can handle an email account will let me use it. OK they might charge me but i beats this, even if he wants such an agreement. I do not like Yahoo, and I quit AOL but still have the email because they kept on removing features I used. They used to have hosting, it went away. They used to have Usenet access, it went away. What's more I had their broadband which was $ 55 a month. I got two words for them, the first one starts with "F" and the second one is "themselves".

I wonder what hotrmail is like...

Hello, Shal and anyone who knows,

We just transferred in a large group and one of our members has indicated
a concern with receiving group posts. As he put it:

-------------------------

(Begin quote)

There is a significant difference in how the new host sends out group messages.
Namely, the new host sends them " From: " each individual SBL member rather than
" From: <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected]."
By consequence, the messages get blocked by the spam filter.
Whitelisting <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected] does not help because the messages are not sent
by <mailto:[email protected]>SBL<mailto:[email protected]>@Groups.io. They are sent " From: " 1,500 individual accounts.

Before the changeover, the mails were From: <group <mailto:name@...>name@...>
Now, the mails are From: Individual name <mailto:persons-email@...><persons-email@...>, or whomever.
Anyone with a rigorous filter ¡ª which some of us need ¡ª is not t currently receiving any messages.

(End quote)

---------------------------

I'm not sure how to help. No one else has yet indicated a problem with this.

Thank you,

Peter

Your subscriber's approach to filtering spam is overly aggressive and has likely been causing him issues here and there for quite some time. I suggest he contact the ISP that offers this filter, or if it's something he purchased separately, contact customer support.

But in an effort to be more helpful than judgmental...

On the white listing side of things... there are headers that consistently contain "groups.io" or "[email protected]." He needs to white list mail containing "groups.io" in one of those headers. The "Sender:" header containing [email protected]" seems like a good candidate.

Or on the rejection side of things can he include a second criterion in each rule that blocks messages from groups.io saying something like "Any Header doesn't contain groups.io"

There's one more solution... he can get a new email address that's used for NOTHING but groups.io (and maybe other mailing list) subscriptions. Presumably that email address won't have been propagated to every spammer in the universe and will be essentially spam-free.

I have some email addresses that are 25 years old that get no spam because I use them only with friends and the rest of the world (where the spammers live) has never seen them. ;-)

Good luck to him.

Hi, Toby and Glenn.

Thank you to both of your for your suggestions.

It appears that Groups.io labels and sends out group posts
differently than Yahoogroups does.

So, does Groups.io allow a group to adjust its email delivery settings
so that posts to the group from individual members will still always
show the sender as <[email protected]>, instead of the personal
address of the sender?

Thank you for your help.

?Actually, Groups.io does it both ways. It uses its own domain in the From for messages from users of certain email services, but passes the sender's From unmodified for all others. Yahoo Mail and AOL are among the services for which the From address gets modified.

?Yes, a few years back , in response to a problem they (Yahoo Mail) and AOL created by marking their outbound messages for rejection if forwarded through a mailing list.

Re: Need to add to and modify the footer of each message

Jim,

I looked at that link but I do not see any specifics other than inserting some text.? Do I need to use html coding to insert the url or is it just typed out as normal text then hope that it gets converted to html hot link?

?I wrote:?

Enter the plain text URL of the links. In HTML formatted messages that will be automatically converted to a link (as shown in the example). In plain text messages it will be passed as plain text (of course), whether it displays as an active link depends on the receiving member's email interface.

?
The problem I have been running into is that I go into my account in and add a signature block and enable it but it does not appear in messages that I might post.

?Signatures are an entirely different thing that the group footer. ?

A footer addition for all group messages is done through the group's Settings page.
A signature for your messages is done through your Subscription page.

Am I to assume that my email client is responsible for that and nothing to do with settings I might have chosen?? My email client is Thunderbird.

?I use Thunderbird ?as well as Gmail web interface. Either can add a signature to my messages. But then that signature is applied to any message I send to any recipient.

An advantage of the Signature feature in your Subscription page is that it is specific to the group receiving your posts. I use my Subscription page to add the signature about getting help because that signature is only appropriate to GMF.

?Unlike ?the group footer, the edit box for your Signature allows formatting.

? I have not tried doing a message via web to see if it adds it then.

?You can have it either way or both:

For that reason I am trying to find out what makes it work or not work even after enabling.

I don't know what system he writes his "rigorous" filters in, but my MUA allows for wildcard filters, so it would just be "*@groups.io" for all 1,500 of them.

Oath has been requiring users to accept a new privacy agreement, pledging to hold Oath blameless for any misuse of your personal information stored by Oath.? Oath would not let me access my?AOL e-mail until I accepted? the new privacy agreement; holding them blameless in the future.? It has appeared several times as a pop-up.? I ignored it when it happened with lists on YahooGroups; however in order to continue using my AOL mail account I had to pledge to hold them blameless; hence the Oath Pledge, as others have called it.

The first item in the Message Formatting section of your group's Settings page is a text box where you can enter a group-specific addition to the message footers.

See here for examples of what it looks like. Approximately, the footers have been changed a bit this week, but the page hasn't yet been updated to match.

I looked at that link but I do not see any specifics other than inserting some text.? Do I need to use html coding to insert the url or is it just typed out as normal text then hope that it gets converted to html hot link?

I would like to add a link to the files section for the group, the
photos section, and a specific web site.? Can that be done? How?
Enter the plain text URL of the links. In HTML formatted messages that will be automatically converted to a link (as shown in the example). In plain text messages it will be passed as plain text (of course), whether it displays as an active link depends on the receiving member's email interface.

I also some a comment in one of the messages this weekend that spoke
of the user selected signature not getting inserted.
Seems to be working fine on my messages, at least as I see them. We may need more detail on the circumstances to understand what's happening. Are you looking in the group's Messages section, or in your email interface? What email interface? Any special settings? I seem to recall that there may have been a bug with viewing formatted messages in plain text, but I thought that had been fixed.
The problem I have been running into is that I go into my account in groups.io and add a signature block and enable it but it does not appear in messages that I might post.?
