Re: Group Transfer Question - Two Groups.IO Memberships

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Patty,

Thanks, Chris.? I think I've pieced together some clear, step by step instructions for our list members that need a little hand-holding, I appreciate it.
Feel free to post it here, or maybe in our Wiki, for other"s benefit.

And, I will most certainly add that to our Wiki page and strongly encourage folks to read it so they know the resolutions.?

Note that GMF's Wiki pages, like its messages, are public. This means you don't have to copy it (unless you want to) - you can just pass the link to your members. That way if ours gets updated they'll see the updated content.

Re: Member Reports Inability To Add Photo Album

Carol,

I attached a picture of what I see inside the photo album for this group.? No Add Photos button is available.
Well there's your problem: you're in the Emailed Photos album. That's a special album that is only for photos that arrived by email.

Should I have created a new album for my picture instead?
In this case, yes.

I realize you were in extreme frustration, and meant to be lighthearted.? I just thought someone should speak up and object to the stereotyping, since it doesn't do anyone any good.? I hope you know that I intended my response to be lightheared also.

Re: Member Reports Inability To Add Photo Album

Duane,

I understand about no add button in the main page of the photos page.? My member was inside an album at the time and there was no add photos button.? I was also inside the photo album for this group (GroupManagersForum) when I saw there was no add photo button.

My member was able to create an album and add a photo to it, but not to open an existing album and add a photo.? Are albums ported over from Yahoo somehow closed?? The groups I am talking about were all transferred over this week.

I did check to make sure my members have permission to upload and view photos.? I do not have access to the Admin settings for the groups I co-moderate.

Re: Group Transfer Question - Two Groups.IO Memberships

Before we cause any more dissonance within this group we all should remember that computer history is filled with what you seem to term "old people", many of whom had no formal computer training because there was none.when they in this field..\

I have in mind people like Grace Hopper and Fran Allen and Jean Bartik.
And many more of us "old people", both men and women, were once young and part of the core group that brought computers into our world.

So let's quit the not so wisecracks about age, gender and other subjects that don't further improve groups.io

Re: Member Reports Inability To Add Photo Album

A member of my group reported the same problem.? She doesn't see the Add photos button at all.

I checked the Settings and I had already set it to allow subscribers to view and upload.? There are two other groups which I co-moderate.? My member belongs to these groups and can't upload photos there, either.? I didn't have access to the settings to check on permissions, but did confirm that I see the add photos buttons for both.

I then checked the photos page for this moderator group.? I do not see an add photos button.? Are members of this group supposed to have permission to upload photos?? Is this group the right place to report a possible bug?

Carol B.

Re: Replies going to Notification group and being rejected

Looks like that might have been the problem.? Thank you Duane.

I am not finding when it got changed but it was definitely flagged as an announcement group under Span control:
"Announcement Group

Only moderators are allowed to post."
The Announcement Group box was checked.? That has since been corrected.

I was sure that users had been able to post in the past but maybe I was mistaken and it was set up this way and never changed.? At any rate,? that has been corrected.

Thank you.

Jim

Printing a Database

Is there a way to print a database?? On our group we swap greeting cards so it is nice to be able to print the database that contains the members names and addresses.? I have not been able to find a way to do this other than using the screen shot and printing it that way, but as the list gets bigger than the one page shown that will be more difficult to do.
THANKS for all you do keeping us going.
Lyn

Hi Jim, what is going on here, it is apparently your group is set up to where only the owner/moderators can post to the group. So one of two things can be done here. You can give him storr to where he can be moderator cheater group, or you can change the group from announcements only to anybody can post I believe is what it's called. See admin/group settings to look at your settings.

How would their replies go to a notification group. Why would this just suddenly start happening and how do I fix it? I see no option to even redirect the message to the right place even though it should never have gone to a notification group in the first place (at least as near as I could find). The list is a low volume list but so far all responses to that list by non owner/moderators have been rejected as going to the notification list.

Thank you.
Jim

Re: Replies going to Notification group and being rejected

Go to the group Settings page and scroll down to the Spam Control section.? The second box will be checked if it's an Announcement Group.? Since you say it started suddenly, check the Activity Log to see when the group settings were last changed, and by whom.

Replies going to Notification group and being rejected

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

As a follow up I had one of the users that had a rejected message send the message directly to the group with [email protected] (using the actual group name of course) but it again bounced with the message:

groups.io gave this error:
Remote server returned an error -> 500 This is an announcement group and you do not have permission to post to it.

Again,? the group is not a notification group.? Can anyone tell me why this suddenly started happening?? I am not seeing other groups have this problem so I assume it is something with the particular group but I see nothing in any of the admin settings that would cause this and especially for it to suddenly start.

Thank you.

Jim

So, what I still need answer for are these 2 questions:

1.? How does a newly transferred person finish creating their Groups.IO account?? I.e., they are asking, "How do I sign into the list?"? The transfer agent has created an ID for them, but how do they go about creating the password?
Patty; as an aside I can assure you that dealing with a load of men who are also at the upper end of the age spectrum is almost as tricky sometimes...

Michael Pavan came pretty close to answering this question, but I'll try to describe a slightly simpler way for you to pass on to your members.

  1. Open Browser. (Bit obvious but better to be certain!) and enter /. Once opened that will give them a page with a picture of elephants as a background.

  2. Near the top right of the page there is a Tab for Log In: this will take them to /login.

    ?

  3. Enter their email address; this must be the one that was previously used with the Yahoo Group.
  4. Follow the instructions from Michael's Point 4 onwards.

A lot of "future time" will be saved if, once everything is up and running, your members provide themselves with a shortcut to / page; the means of doing this is browser - dependent. In addition to making a record of their passwords (as Michael suggested) it is also very much worth using their browsers to store it so that the information doesn't have to be entered by hand each time they want to access groups.io.

Now I don't want to worry you but you may have problems ahead if your members are using Yahoo email addresses, although the problem of members being automatically ejected because of spam reports is not limited to Yahoo. Can I suggest you look at the GMF wiki section about this so that you will have some background knowledge of the complications. The relevant page is here: Removed for Marking Messages as spam. There is nothing "copyright" about this page so feel free to copy and paste it into your own Group wiki, and be sure to recommend to your members that they read it.

Chris
