The problem with that is that when a Private reply/message is sent, it includes the email address of the person sending it.

Thanks, Gerald.? I opened my Inbox today to 300 emails :-(? Transferring two large and active Yahoo Groups at the same time was probably not a good idea.?
Yep, the transfer itself tends to generate a lot of traffic, mostly from subscribers who either have "no email" delivery or generally aren't paying attention.

I haven't even had time to try to search the Help files for this info, I appreciate you pointing it out to me, and I'll copy and paste this into a reply.?
I suggest you send your group(s) select portions of the FAQ section of the Help page as a Special Notice (/static/help#faq). In particular, the login function here is quite different from Y!G and seems to cause a lot of confusion among newbies.

And, I'll certainly try to re-transfer the Files section of both lists, again.? We have a lot of files, and they're all grouped into folders.? Not sure if the folder structure is causing the issue with the transfer.
I'm sure it's not the folder structure. Yahoo seems to be experiencing problems with the files section of several groups right now. It has been a pernicious problem with some groups over the past 2+ years ().

You might first try visiting the groups manually to check whether they are online at all. If you can't see them, the agent can't transfer them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: #directory #directory

Shal,

That's a good point. But I guess that I am now realizing (from other responses) that many group members will probably not even create a profile. Which limits the use of the directory for everyone.

Ideally, I would like an option where members who join are automatically agreeing to be shown in the directory - with their name or whatever screen name they choose. That would allow people to choose an anonymous screen name (if needed) but also allow everyone to be able to PM each other individually as needed.

Chris,

The need for some of our group members to have anonymity is NOT unreasonable. It has to do with legal issues regarding very sensitive issues. Our entire group agrees that it may occasionally be necessary and agree that the moderators get to decide on a case by case basis.

I don't think that making them moderators is the solution for us, but thanks for the idea.

If you have a Moderator in the Yahoo group with permissions to invite and promote members, then you don't necessarily need an Owner. So you might check into that option as well.

I recently copied over a group and PGOffline was very handy to bring over the files area. Fortunately, the transfer agent was able to bring over the messages.

Good luck,
Bruce?

Just some follow-up and clarification on this. It appears that the files area of the associated group is completely down on Yahoo. It was not the fault of the transfer agent that the files did not come over.

Re: Group Transfer Question - Two Groups.IO Memberships

Patty,

The following description below is from the Help pages. This explains the process for merging two accounts.

Regarding file transfers, you could try again and maybe Yahoo will be more cooperative. Use the same transfer process, but only select Files. If that doesn't help, then you'll probably have to do a manual download / upload of the files you really want to keep.

To change your email address, log into Groups.io. Then look for the dropdown in the top right corner of the page, which will be either your name or email address. Click that and then click Account.

On the edit profile page, you can change your email address. Once you do so, you will receive a new confirmation email. Once you reply to that, you will be all set.

If the email address you wish to change to is already a registered member on Groups.io, a page will come up explaining the account merge process and verifying that you would like to merge your accounts.

Thanks all for the responses. I thought there wouldn't be a way but thought I would check.

Just wondering as well why there is an area to add a description of the attached photo when we are approving a post and that description doesn't show up anywhere in the Emailed photos album?? What is the purpose of the description then?

Re: Transferring from a PG Offline database (.pg4) to groups.io #pgoffline

I understand the issue of hijacking, but this effort is being done with the approval of the list owner who has been locked out of Yahoo for some reason.? He has tried numerous email logon's and can't get in.? As I said, he is the only owner and since he can't get in, he can't make anyone else moderator or owner.?? He also has some health issues.?? So far, I haven't even set up the new group on groups.io, preferring to ask questions first to make sure the direction we are going is correct.? I assume "Mark" is the head of Groups.io??? We may have to work harder on the issue of restoring the owner's log in ability.?

Hi,
The folder is a record of an event that happened. That is, an object was emailed.
If you were (to be allowed) to change that- it is no longer an accurate 'record' as it was not in fact 'emailed' that way.
Perfectly logical to me.

If you wish to use the photo, you need to (IMU) make a copy and file elsewhere as appropriate. Delete the original.
Its also possible to delete the album. Ask me how I know___

The Emailed Photos album is not like other photo albums...it is simply a repository for the pictures. The associated message serves to identify it.?

Go to Admin->Upgrade and click on the link that says View Attachments. Here you can view all the messages with attachments in a different way and access them by size or date.

If you open one of the messages, click on the More menu at bottom right and select "Edit Message." Here all the attachments to that message will be listed and you can delete (but not rename) them if you wish.

Note that if you do delete the attachment, it is considered a message edit and a notice will be sent to the person who originally posted it, even if you click "Save without Sending."

I hope something in there helps.

Regards,
Bruce

I think I understand that. What I'm struggling to understand is how punishing those who don't serves to fix the underlying problem.

Bruce

P.S. By the way, you could make those members Moderators. Moderators can see all the member profiles.?

I am struggling to see any useful purpose in the Directory for normal members.

After going through the hoops to create an account to see what all of the fuss is about, I cannot see any beneficial purpose for the Directory for ordinary members. First off, only 200 of the 1,000 members of this group show up at all. As Shal mentioned, one cannot obtain actual email addresses, although it is possible to send a direct email to a listed member. But I can already do that by doing a private reply to an existing post.

I also downloaded a group in this manner once, not in order to transfer it, but for my own "safekeeping" in case Yahoo completely crashed and burned. Eventually I was able to coerce the owners of that same group to make me a co-owner and perform an actual transfer...again, as a backup if nothing else. The originating Yahoo group still exists and remains mildly [and sporadically] active.

As I understand it, the messages can only be uploaded if they are in mbox format. Unfortunately, this is not one of the PGOffline export options. Emailed photos album

Is there a way to rename the photos in the emailed photo album?? I am an owner on my group but the album doesn't allow me to edit the photos.

I tried editing a photo when I was approving a test message with a photo attached and even though I found a section labelled "Image Options" and was able to add a description of the photo there, the description didn't show up in the emailed photos album.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Transferring from a PG Offline database (.pg4) to groups.io #pgoffline

I have read a few of the posts, but it sounds like no one has written about transferring a Yahoo group using a downloaded PG Offline database.? Is this possible and has anyone done this?? The group we want to transfer has no available owner to start a standard transfer from groups.io.? He has been locked out and can't get in.? ?He is moderating by virtue of getting email messages for moderated posts.? I have downloaded all the messages, attachments, photos, and files via PG Offline.? ?Any thoughts?
