Re: GROUP SETTINGS OPTION ¨C Automatic Post Removal After a Period of Time . . .

Duane,

Thanx... Your answers are always helpful and much appreciated.

So . . . I just went and looked at the 'create hashtag' option over on our G.IO site and see all the time/duration options. That's a nice timesaver for our moderators.

But it would be nice to see a two month option for the duration of posts. We feel that is a sensible amount of time for a member's ad wanting to sell or their house or their car, etc. to remain up. After that time it's most likely either sold (or not), rented (or no interest), or just plain stale, as ads go. And two months seems a more reasonable amount of time for a free ad with an exposure to so many members to remain in place before removal. And especially so for a large-ticket item like a member's house, car, or property.

BTW, a Classified area could be useful for many groups but we eventually found a real need to restrict what had become an overwhelming number of commercial ads but we chose to continue to allow personal ads by our members. This seems to have work quite well for us.

So, who would I make a suggestion to for a two-month option? To Beta? Or . . . ?

The transfer agent normally moves the subscribers first. Then as each file/photo is moved, its ownership is compared to the people found in the GIO group's member's list. If no corresponding subscriber is found, ownership defaults to the group owner (you).

This does not apply to the message archive.

What this means for you:? If you want photo and file ownership to be retained in the transfer, you either have to let the transfer agent move them, or find some way to subscribe all the "active" subscribers to the GIO group ahead of time, using the same email addresses they are currently using in the Yahoo group.?

My original advice (to just let the agent move everybody and remove the inactive people afterward) stands. I really think you'll have less of a mess to clean up that way.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your reply as well - I realise that would be quicker and easier, but I'd really much rather let sleeping dogs lie ;)

Thank you for your reply. There is no boxed or any message in the 5 groups at this time.
Waiting patiently. Thank you again.

At this time, it seems the longest wait in the process is for the transfer agent to accept your invitation. Go to the transfer page at?/yahootransfer?and select your group name from the "in-process" pull-down menu. Chances are, there's a boxed message at the top saying "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite."?If so, I suggest you heed that message and wait your turn in the queue.

Once you get the "ready" message (it will arrive to [email protected]), make the agent a Moderator and return to this page to actually get things going (Steps 3 and 4), the transfer should proceed within 24-48 hours.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: GROUP SETTINGS OPTION ¨C Automatic Post Removal After a Period of Time . . .

On my groups, I created a hashtag of #ForSale for just this purpose.? At the end of One Month, the thread is deleted.? Some folks forget to include it on the Subject line, but it's not too much trouble for me to add it when I notice that it's needed.? You also have options of One Hour, One Day, One Week, One Year, or Forever.

There has been discussion on the beta group about possibly having a Classified area (as a new side bar menu item) available on groups as an option.? If that happens, I hope it will offer options to cover most situations.

GROUP SETTINGS OPTION ¨C Automatic Post Removal After a Period of Time . . .

Since I have not seen this addressed on here I searched but culd not discover whether there is any setting anywhere with which to flag a member's post so that it is removed or hidden after so many days or months, etc., (including any attached photos)?

Under: Admin > Settings > Message Policies > Reply To . . . ¨Ctwo of the options are:

~ Automatically Moderate Topics Older than. . . AND

~ Automatically Lock Topics Older than . . . BUT . . .

In the past on one of our old groups we asked our members to remove their old ad posts if the item had been sold or if they posted an updated ad, but there was never much compliance with taking down the older ads. So we would wind up going in periodically and removing those ad posts older than several months.

It would free up space and unclutter searching if old posts of this sort were automatically removed ¨Csay, after about 3 months¨C which seems a fair amount of time to leave a free ad post in place. And we woud no longer have to rely on the members to remove their old ad posts.

Or would an automatic post removal option be at all possible maybe by using a hashtag that a moderator could apply to a post which would then remove the post after a certain amount of time?

Just pondering here . . .

TIA

Current transfer time?

The owner of one group is trying to transfer to Groups.io and is wondering what the time that is expected before the transfer is completed? It was about three weeks several weeks ago.
Thanks!

Marie Alline

Thank you for your response! I don't know if this is going to be a great idea! One of my members thought that I wanted her to leave and unsubbed from my group. She absolutely did not want that in the footers of her email. Can't they just use the hyperlink without the addresses of the recipients??

Thanks,

Transfer only messages & files

Hello,
I'm moving a very old group from Yahoo and want to "weed out" the people who no longer participate, so I'd rather not transfer the members automatically. Can I skip that part of the process and only have Groups.io transfer messages, files and photo's?
With many thanks,
Marga

Re: New subscribers and closed groups

There has been a lot of discussion here and on the beta group about having this capability.? For now, most are using the Pending Subscription message, though it does add a step and a bit more work for owners/moderators.

Re: Help with my transfers over needed please.

?
Ok Thank you Shal.
It is my understanding that IO management must accept the invitation to join the Yahoo group and then notify me so I can make them a moderator, then notify them to get set up for the transferring process.
I will be patient. Please let me know if there is anything I can or need to do along the way.
Thank you

?
That's Step 2, so I assume you've also taken Step 1 to set up the transfers.
As Gerald mentioned there is a backlog of groups to be transferred, so two
weeks may not be out of line.
?
If you haven't, see also Bruce's step-by-step process
And the additional tips here:
?
? > I have given the IO groups the same names as the Yahoo groups.
?
So it looks like you've got Step 0 covered. By the way, it isn't
required that you name the groups the same, so if you want to change any
now would be the best time.
?
I notice that your Y!Groups are related in content matter, so I thought
I'd mention that it isn't required that there be a 1:1 match-up between
Yahoo Groups and Groups.io groups. You can copy two Y!Groups into the
same Groups.io group, and you can copy a Y!Group into a subgroup of a
Groups.io group. So you have some options there if you want to re-think
the structure of your groups.
?
If you want to make any of those changes you can still do so up until
the time you give the final go-ahead on each group's In Process page
(Step 4). There's an update button on the page that will allow you to
change your copy options, and I believe that includes the Groups.io
group selection (but not the Y!Group name IIRC).
?
? > It is my understanding that when you accept the invitations that I
? > have sent you, you will notify me so I can make you a moderator.
?
Please note that GMF is a user-to-user forum - no Groups.io employees
here. That said, yes. In Step 3 the transfer agent will send you an email
with instructions. And then in Step 4 you use the In Process page for each
Y!Group to tell the transfer agent that you're ready to go.
?
? > By the way, you have the word 'clicking' misspelled at
?
Bug reports go to [email protected], and the official suggestion box for
Groups.io is the beta group:
?
? > Hugs and thanks for any help on my group transfers you can give me.
?
You're welcome. Feel free to reply back to this group if you have more
questions or comments.

Yes, that is a great way to do it. It's also sent automatically.

Thanks.

Are you using the "Pending Subscription" message capability? It is an ideal way of sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Oh ok. Thank you very much. I didn't know if I was doing something wrong or whatnot.
I know my members have been wondering the same and looking at me as the problem me thinks.
Thanks for your response. I REALLY appreciate it.

I think the only thing missing is likely patience. The queue is quite long (several weeks) at this time.?Take a scan through recent postings and you'll see that many others are in the same boat.

New subscribers and closed groups

On my Yahoogroups, I required a new subscriber to write a short statement to say why they would like to join the group. If the statement was topical to the group they were joining, then I knew they were legitimate and not joining to spam the group and approved the subscription.

I don't seem to find that feature on . is it there and I am missing it?
