Re: Vetting New Subscribers

Yes; it's simple.

Set up a "Pending Subscription" message ("Settings" then "Member Notices") and make sure that it is set to "Active". When an application turns up in "Pending" this message will automatically be sent to the Applicant.

How you word it is entirely up to you. You then decide to admit (or not, as the case may be) the applicant based on their response.

Files and Photos Sections #files #photos

Should the need arise rearranging the a "Files" section is straightforward; Folders can be created and Files moved between them. I have just done this on the group I moderate because over the years it had become rather untidy.

There appears to be no equivalent process available for Photos; OK they can be deleted, but short of downloading each and everyone and then uploading them again into a newly created Folder there is no way that I have found of reorganising them. Apart from downloading and uploading again being tedious beyond description I suspect that the attributions might well be lost in the process. There also appears to be no way of creating an Index so that users have some chance of finding what they want to see without having to go through each and every Photo in each and every Album. We seem to have 253 Albums, and an estimated 1500 - 2000 photos.

Has this caused headaches for other Owners & Moderators, or have I missed something obvious? Should we be asking for the means to edit / index Photo Archives more easily? I suppose that judicious editing of Album Titles might be a possible start...

Vetting New Subscribers

Michael Jaross

As a moderator, when I get a new subscriber approval email from?, all I get is the prospective subscriber's email address. We would like to vet our members a little bit more to limit misuse. Is there a way to get more information from prospective subscribers? Thanks.

Re: #Photos #photos

Marie; is your Group set up to enable attachments or not? If yes, does it need to be? If that is the case then the only other solution is to remove your graphics at source. If you don't need the ability to accept attachments then disable them.

Re: Settings to change the order of files and databases

Don,

?

When I was on Y the databases acted the same as they do on Group.io for me. After setting the way I wanted information sorted, once I closed the dbase and opened it again, it defaulted back to what it was before. I never found a way on Y for it to change the default permanently.

?

when you went into subscription in YG, there was a big field named ¡°sort and view settings¡± where you could edit the order of messages, files, links and photos. Once you changed the order, it stayed that way until you decided to change it again. I find this a very comfortable function and thought it might exist somewhere and I hadn?t found it yet.

How do I keep the graphics from my html emails from uploading to a folder on the photos page when I send them through the group??

Thank you,

Result of 2nd test message rejection:? Still no "Bcc to me" or "Bcc all moderators" have shown up in my email or in my spam folder so not working for my group yet.? Does it take time for Mark's change to take effect?

Hi, everyone,

?

I can search for files, members and databases either alphabetically or by date of arrival, but I cannot set it so it stays changed, a setting I was used to have in yg. Maybe I just haven?t found it yet¡.

Is there a way to have a "Welcome" message automatically sent to new people when they join?

? ?I try to send one as soon as able.? I get informed instantly when someone joins.? ?
? ?Wish list item - Not require the first message be approved.

Ours is a private HOA group and will never have more than 50-60 members.

Re: can I make a group "email only"?

Wouldn't setting default subscription to "Special Notices Only" work?

Is Concierge Service still accepting issues from that guy? Because for
most of this year, and maybe even parts of last year, that was the only
way to get anything fixed.

If they can restore it from a backup
Yahoo knows what a backup is ?!?!?!

I did that back in the day... with the result that my ISP was blocked as spam by a variety of big names, even though the list I sent to was not all that large - around 50 members. That was about 10 years ago and it's still sometimes a problem.

Re: can I make a group "email only"?

I agree with Toby unless your volunteer list is so large that your mail service blocks it as spam. Then a service such as MailChimp would be advisable.

I set up a Gmail account for notices to members of a 60 voice choir, promos to community liaisons and advertisers, etc. The account is delegated to other people who can author messages and maintain the contacts lists.

Re: A whole week?

Marie Alline

Thanks Sharon! I'm not sure why people want to stay. Some people just don't like change and are scared maybe that they won't be able to navigate or something. Yesterday was very silent but today I am getting feedback and even other mods are emailing me that they want to move. Yes, they have all been transferred and the one who unsubbed did not unsub from the Yahoo group so I think she might be thinking about it. Especially after yesterday being such a bad day for email! I couldn't get anything to go through the group at Yahoo yesterday at all! I finally sent a note to everyone that I was not posting to the old group and that they should put themselves on no mail at the old group so they don't get double emails. Today I got a lot of feedback from everyone and it was all positive so far. I sent a chatty good morning letter and encouraged them to email me if they need any help with the group here. I also set up a chat in the group for help and let them know that. No one has used it yet but at least they know they aren't alone and can get help if they need it.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Jim; are they "unsubscribing" or are they being deleted because a message was marked as spam? Check the wording of the Notifications that you receive each time.

See the wiki section of this group for Removed for Marking Messages as spam because this might help explain things. Feel free to copy it into your own wiki section.

You can see which accounts are bouncing fairly easily. Go to Admin->Members, click on the blue button immediately above "Display Name" and select "Bouncing."?But people are not unsubscribed for bouncing, so that's probably not what's happening.

How well did you announce the move beforehand? Did you attempt to proactively contact those who were on "No Email" or "Special Notices" back in Yahoo? There are a lot of lurkers who only check in when they feel like it...such folks are often taken aback when they suddenly receive an unanticipated email from some mysterious thing called "groups.io" telling them to click on this and that. I know that *I* would be.

I tried very hard to contact everybody in my groups beforehand and explain why we were doing this and what the timeline was. Despite all my efforts, I still had two people (out of 150) click the unsub link in the notification email, so I guess some glitches of this nature are unavoidable.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
