Re: #poll Creating Polls #poll

No. The hashtag was automatically created when I created the first poll.

Re: #poll Creating Polls #poll

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure if I'm the Marie you were talking about but thanks for this info. My members are having a hard time voting in the polls and are a bit confused with the move here. I know it's going to take them a bit but I am learning right along with you.

Thanks again for your help,
Marie Alline

Addition to my question: I just saw that all the bounced ones have a yahoo-address.
About a month ago, Yahoo email servers were having a lot of problems. So it may be related to that.?

See also this from the GMF Wiki regarding Yahoo transfers:

"It's not unusual for a significant fraction of YG members' email addresses to begin bouncing after the transfer is complete. Many of these will be members previously on "no email" or "special notices" who perhaps got a new email address some time ago and found it easier to change their message delivery instead of unsubscribing. How much effort you want to spend chasing down these inactive accounts is up to you."

If it were me, I would manually send them all a bounce probe, just in case it's related to the server problem. If some of them unbounce themselves, fine. How much more effort you want to put into it is up to you, but if no one is actively complaining I suspect these folks aren't participating anyway.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

To vote, you first have to log in. It's always a good idea to say that in the polling question, and provide a link to the login instructions at?/static/help#password

As group owners, we tend to stay logged in all the time, and it's easy to forget that many of our subscribers do not. In my groups, most never log into the site at all, and all their interactions are via email.?

With sampling skewed towards those members willing to jump through that hoop, I've found that the outcome of any poll is mostly untrustworthy.

Bruce

Re: question abpout bouncing

If you click on the line listing a member in the bounced members display it will take you to their information. Once there you can click on "Activity History" to see when they were originally bounced. You can also click on "Email Delivery History" to see what the error message was.

Yahoo seems to be having trouble with their email system causing some to bounce. The error message I see from Yahoo addresses most often is "554 delivery error: dd Requested mail action aborted". I have no idea what that means. It doesn't really tell you if the address is no longer valid or if there is just some problem with the server.

I generally wait, sending occasional bounce probes, until the addresses are Bounced, with a red B, and then try sending a email directly to the person. If that bounces as well I usually remove them from the email list. I'm not sure what to do about the Yahoo addresses though. If the problem is with the Yahoo system it may be that the problem will be fixed eventually.

Hello:

I am new to this forum and cannot find the answer to my question.

I am owner of two groups. In one of the groups there is a ¡°Reply to Sender¡± link in the footer. The other group would like a this option. What setting do I need to make this happen?

?

Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks, Paul and Toby. I?ve been reading through the bouncing thread here, and I hope I can handle this. By the way I cannot find any function to send the automatical bouncing email as it was possible with yahoo.

2 Copies of Messages

I am receiving two copies of any message I send to some Groups.io lists¡ªnot GMF or Beta. I am the owner of all of them but not all of them send 2 copies. I can¡¯t find any differences in the settings.

Clues?

Re: question abpout bouncing

Go to Admin -> Members -> select Bouncing from the drop down list [Button that says Members with little triangle next to it].
Click on the member to view that member's info
Click on Email Delivery History button to view all the bounce messages.? The error message will give you more info to research further.

Re: question abpout bouncing

What has helped me is to check their Delivery History. Go to Admin, Members, Bouncing (that just makes it easier to find the list of bouncers); then under each individual click "Email Delivery History" at the top. You may (or may not) be able to garner more information from those entries.

Cassie my group uses incredimail. You have to make sure you have the setting for HTML. Also do not put a size for the image. Once I did that the stationary comes out not broken any more.

Re: Gmail apps alias unable to send

Hello Shal,

I most certainly subscribed to the list as "littlejack@...", but when I try to mail the list from that address, gmail? send the mail with a From as "mbergen is sending as littlejack". Only if my mbergen@ email address is added to the list may I post to it, even as littlejack@.?

I'm subscribed to this group as mbergen as that's what I intend to use for another group I'm planning? to bring to once I have a more complete understanding of it.?

Thanks for the tip about an alias on the group login page. Let me try that.

Thanks!

I'm a little confused by your description. You ought to be able to post from the email address which is subscribed to the group.

That shouldn't matter, I think, if Gmail is putting your burning man name in as the From that's what should match your group subscription and allow you to post.

> and will only allow me to post from my mbergen account.

And that's where I get confused. If you joined under your burning man name Groups.io shouldn't accept mbergen. Well, part of the answer may be the fact that you're posting in this group with that name. Are you sure you didn't join the little group with the mbergan address and not the burning man name?

Anyway, here's how it works:

When you join a Groups.io group you subscribe with a particular email address, and that is the address where group messages are sent. You can also post from that address (subject to the rules of the group, of course).

You can have a second address to post from by entering it as an Email Alias. That's found on the Login page of your Groups.io account. But this alias address is "post only" - group messages are never sent there.

A second option, if you wish to receive group messages at both addresses, is to have a second account and second subscription under that second address.

Hashtag for "New file uploaded..."

Is there any way of automatically adding a hashtag to the post generated when a member uploads a new file? I've had a look around but haven't found anything.

Re: #poll Creating Polls #poll

Marie; further to my earlier post what seems more likely is that "someone" checked the Replies by Mods Only box which is part of the "Poll" hashtag. Go to your hashtags page, and click "Edit" on your Poll hashtag and then look right down at the bottom of the page that appears.

Duane; thanks for that. Well worth knowing; the difficulty is getting members to actually read any instructions! (You may detect bitter experience here...)

This risks getting me burnt at the stake for heresy but here goes...

I find myself wondering just how useful hashtags actually are. On the Group I moderate* (no subgroups BTW) we have a few "Moderators Only" hashtags, but providing some for members to use is under consideration.

As a preparatory move I set up a poll yesterday to try to establish exactly how our members use our Group, and perhaps by extension how they use Groups.io. Now it's far too soon to conclude what the final result will be but the very early indication is that the majority of members** only use the web UI occasionally or less, right down to "never" because they rely solely on emails.

Look at a web UI with hastags; their presence is unmissable because they can be quite eye - grabbing; OTOH anyone using an email UI will find a (small) #hashtag in the subject line of the email, but only if they either look for it or spot it by chance - the body of the email may give no clue that the subject of the email is hashtagged.

I will go as far as to suggest that unless you actually know how your members are accessing Groups.io, worrying about the use of hashtags and subgroups inheriting those from a main group by default (or not) may be pointless. If your hashtags are for members' use (and not just moderators) then if they use email access either mainly or exclusively then they will have no way of adding them; they would have to log in and use the web UI and for reasons I do not understand there is evidence that (our) members just don't do that.

FWIW I find that rather annoying...

* 2900 members
** 78% at the time of writing - 0820 GMT, but on an annoying low turn - out.

Regards,

Chris.
