Re: Images - Copyright and other related issues?

Jim,

However - it brings up the issues related to copyright, spam, off
topic images, porn, etc.
Those issues aren't much different, whether your concern is embedded images or message text.

How do I, as a group owner, protect myself and my group members - is
turning off embedded images the only way to do that?
If a member posts messages with undesired images you can generally treat that the same way as you'd treat posting messages with undesired language. That is, you discipline the member.

Don't I also have to require all images posted to be moderated?
You don't have a means to moderate only messages with embedded images, you'd have to moderate all messages. Which is an approach that may be appropriate for some types of groups. Groups with restricted membership generally have less concern with moderation of messages, but groups with open membership need to at least moderate the messages of new members, and there's a mechanism for that.

If there are particular members who are prone to posting undesired content you have some options for dealing with them. You do have a means to override the group setting for specific members, it is their Posting Privileges setting - found on their Edit Membership page. Get there by clicking on the member's row of the Membership table. You can set that member to be moderated or even disallow that member from posting.

Or you can remove and/or ban the member from the group.

How to list messages chronologically rather than by topic

As a new moderator/owner of a recently transfered Yahho group I have been asked by several members how be able to view the messages chronologically rather than by topic when viewing on the group page? These members prefer to not receive e-mail and would rather answer and post directly from the group page.

Thanks in advance.

Trouble with that is that if it is "global" you would risk deleting threads that perhaps had long - term value and that thus deserved retention.

However, between submitting my post above and now I have done some "testing" and found a way of making the process I described above a little easier and quicker.

Set up a Moderator Only Hashtag that deletes the Topic to which is added after a chosen interval; the options are a little limited: 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month & 1 year; I suggest 1 hour or 1 day as a start. What you call the hashtag is entirely up to you!

Go through your message archive page by page and identify the topics you wish to delete. Using the drop - down arrow select Edit Subject. Add your #Tagged_for_Deletion to the subject line. Repeat with other earmarked topics on the same page, and then the next page, and then the next and so on. The upside is that you don't have to re-examine each page to see what has been dragged into it to fill the space caused by deleting the topic there and then. The downside is (as before) after each "tagging" the display will revert to the front page. (I am reluctant to ask Mark to change this, if only because I and others throw so many suggestions at him that he must start wondering what's coming next.)

So - perhaps surprisingly - a Hashtag set up to delete a topic can be added long after its creation, and the deletion will take effect after the predetermined interval. Yes it does work because I tested it.

Images - Copyright and other related issues?

Hi,
? A group that I'm a member of is allowing embedded images.? That's great because
it makes the group -much- easier to use.

? However - it brings up the issues related to copyright, spam, off topic images,
porn, etc.

? How do I, as a group owner, protect myself and my group members - is turning
off embedded images the only way to do that?? Don't I also have to require all

Not too much info to go on.. How about this?
Set a global lock date after so many days, and then look for and delete locked threads?

Re: Emails when a member leaves one of my groups

Would setting this also turn off notification about members being unsubscribed because a message to them was marked as spam?

Re: Deleting out dated posts

Tony; it's not difficult but I would put money on it not being long before you start thinking "this is tedious" followed some time later by "I wish I hadn't started this".

As a Moderator you will have a drop - down arrow on each topic, and one of the available options is Delete Topic. You will have to plough your way through your message archive finding and deleting each one individually; there is no "Mark for Deletion" followed by "Delete Marked Topics" that I am aware of; I did once look because I was trying basically the same exercise as you are now contemplating.

Please bear in mind that if (for example) you found and deleted an expired topic somewhere and deleted it, the space it occupied will be filled up from the next page, and what fills that space might be another expired topic that you want to delete. Also, (IIRC) deleting any given topic doesn't leave you still looking at the page from which you deleted it; I have a vague recollection of the display reverting to the start of the entire message archive, which makes the process even more time - consuming.

For future use you might want to consider the use of Hashtags for Sales or Wanted. This has the advantage that such marked topics can be made to auto - delete after a set period of time; a month would seem suitable. If anyone forgets to insert a hashtag you (as? moderator) can edit the Subject Line to add one; more work for you, yes, but less time consuming than trying to find the topic a month later so that you can delete it!

I have to be honest at this point and admit that as yet we have not set this up on the group I moderate; we just have very limited "management" hashtags set up at present. In my purely personal opinion hashtags can look extremely messy if used to excess, and that is what I wish to avoid. In addition, knowing the high probability of a topic drifting in use (quite legitimately as often as not) any given post could bear no relation whatsoever to the hashtag at the top.

I suppose this must be some sort of inverse to Godwin's Law; the longer a given thread runs the greater is the likelihood of a post bearing no relation to the subject that started it.

Chris.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Instead of changing the Message-ID for all recipients, we now
only change the Message-ID for the original sender.
I'm not able to put my finger on why, but this one has my spidey-sense tingling. It just seems wrong to distribute the "same" message with different Messsage-ID content.

If nothing else it's bound to flummox me someday when searching my email archive to trace who replied to who. Particularly if they replied to me.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

CHANGE: Change the URL sort for database tables to sort by title
first, then URL, then description.
INTERNAL: Upgraded to Font Awesome 5.
NEW: For premium groups, you can now lock groups/subgroups, making
them read-only.
INTERNAL: Updated the Stripe API library.
CHANGE: Formatting changes to the view event page for events with
RSVPs.
BUGFIX: We didn't recognize RSS feeds that were served to us in non
UTF-8 format. We now fetch feeds and specifically convert them to
UTF-8 before passing them off to the feed parser.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Replies set to Group but users are getting senders email address in From

Liam,

My group has the settings that replies is set to Group but messages
sent are showing the senders email address instead of the
[email protected]
That's typical behavior in email lists (or at least was before DMARC, but that's a long story). The Reply to group messages is controlled by the "Reply-To" field placed in the header of outbound messages, not by the "From" field.

This is usually considered an advantage, as it allows list members to contact each other off-list when necessary or useful.

Re: Replies set to Group but users are getting senders email address in From

William,

I think that needs to be reopened as it is an issue where eople don't
want to manage multiple email addresses yet still want to keep their
anonymity.
I don't particularly care about this proposal, but you can reopen this issue yourself on beta. The topic I cited happens to be locked now, but you could start a new one (and cite that one and/or others).

You might want to do a search there for the word "anonymous", as that became the common description of such groups. Click the Tools button and Collapse Topics to help manage the clutter. You'll find a huge amount of discussion, pro and con. And a few different ideas on exactly what it means.

Re: Emails when a member leaves one of my groups

Sarah,

do all of these apply to any sub groups as well? I'm assuming yes?
You have an independent Subscription page in each subgroup. So you could, for example, receive one of these notices in one subgroup, another in another subgroup, and a different set of them in the primary group.

Re: Signatures

Harrison Spain,

I have both boxes checked (for web based posting, and email posting) to add the signature block regarless of method used to post.

Did you click the blue Save button down at the bottom of the Subscription page?
?
I send an email to the group (with no signature) expecting my signature block in my to be added.? The email arrives... but no signature block.

Is it also missing a standard Groups.io footer?

Ooooh. I was heading somewhere else but...

Do you have your email interface set to show you the plain text version of your messages?

There's a longstanding bug that group footers are missing from the plain text version of mixed messages (those with both a plain and HTML part, which is most HTML formatted messages). It appears the sig is also missing there.

I'd forward the message (particularly if you can forward as an attachment) to [email protected] and report it as a bug. Also cite the group and message number, so Mark can compare the two. Maybe this will be the motivation he needs to fix the missing footer too.
