From the discussions we've had here in GMF recently, the bigger problem most people are experiencing seems to be the exact opposite -- normal group discussions being flagged by overzealous spam filters. This could change as groups.io gets bigger and becomes more of a target. ? 4) Is it possible for a spammer/any one to request membershipIt's entirely possible for a bot to request access to your group via a spoofed email address, but under normal circumstances they will not be allowed to post until their address is confirmed (they are sent a link in an email and someone has to click on it). Those with Premium groups can "direct-add" email addresses, which I believe bypasses these confirmation safeguards. As in most things in life, one cannot have the power without also accepting the responsibility. If you're as concerned about spam control as you appear to be, I suggest your best choice would be to simply set up a moderated group. Hope this helps, Bruce |
Re: How to create a new database record
Milt -- If you don't want subscribers creating their own database tables, you could also choose "Subscribers can view, moderators can create tables" in your database Permissions.?Apparently, subscriber view access includes the ability to add rows to an existing table, something that is not at all intuitive (at least to me).

One word of warning, something I found when I tested it is that if the (last) sub-group is deleted, leaving only the main group, the [email protected] address will be deleted, leaving only [email protected].
Something I need to raise on beta, methinks. Jeremy ? |

Perfect, Bruce.? Many thanks!? Using my moderator account, I was able to add a row and create a record for my new member. Milt |
How Safe (spam proof) is groups.io ???
Hi,
? As both an owner and a moderator of several groups.io groups I'm hoping that the following has been covered/looking for ways to cover it ... ? I just a few moments ago approved a new member to a group. The only info on the request to join was the email address.? That address - simply due to the email addy itself - made me wonder about the legitimacy of the requestor.? As in - "did I just approve a spammer?".?? ? Yes, the group is set to "all new members are moderated (for 2 posts) so if the requestor is a spammer it will be? caught. ? 1) Can some text (introduction) be Required for all proposed ? ? ? new members?? I'm talking about where groups.io does ? ? ? not even let them submit the request to join unless they ? ? ? have included that text. ? 2) Are there things that we - as Owners/Moderators - can do in ? ? ? the group settings ... other than setting all new members to ? ? ? moderated status?? Is it recommended that we set new ? ? ? members to permanent moderated status? ? 3) I am concerned about this particular new member's request. ? ? ? It -seems- to indicate that the spammers have 'discovered' ? ? ? groups.io and are attempting to gain access.? Are others ? ? ? seeing any such activity? ? 4) Is it possible for a spammer/any one to request membership ? ? ? -without- having to process that request while being online? ? ? ? Can this be done with some kind of bot?? Can someone ? ? ? request membership in a group using only email? ? All comments/recommendations appreciated.? ? ? ? ? ? ?- Jim B. |
emails to group instead of sender
#issue
Southenders Admin
I am wondering if there is a way to make sure that members only reply to the sender, rather than the group, for an event. My members are getting ticked that even though my site is set up to 'reply to sender', they are all getting the members replies to events.?
Even though I have asked members to reply only to the email on events related to that event, all members are receiving the replies, as they are made out to the email of the site, rather than the individual who created the event. I would love to be able to put what Shal has on his digest on every event email. But when I try to cut and paste it into the event in the calendar, it does not 'paste'. Do not reply to this email. To reply to a message, click the Reply link under the message. -- Norm |
Re: HTML Question
This is an outlier, highly unlikely, but you might check that you don't have an anti-scripting tool in place that is tidying up for you. I can remember one case, a few years ago, when I scratched my head for some time over a similar problem and it turned out to be that an add-on to my own browser was interfering. Like I say, not likely, but it got me once. Bruce's points are more likely.

Message Formatting
I just transferred a bunch of groups and am getting questions about message formatting I can¡¯t answer. There doesn¡¯t seem to be a description of exactly what these settings mean.
What is the default if I don¡¯t check any of these? Force HTML EmailsThis one seems clear ¡ª change everything to HTML but what if the message is written in plain text? Normalize HTML EmailsWhat does this do to links? Complaints that links are being stretched out to http addresses rather than the name. I like the strip out colors and fonts but what else does it do. Plain Text OnlyThis one seems clear, convert all to plain text ¡ªstretch out links, no colors or formatting, etc. It would be nice to have a screen shot of a message in all these formats. Re: Automatic Deletion of Members If Message Marked As Spam
#poll
Hi
I wonder whether Mark would be willing to do two things, a compromise. When ¡°notified¡± about spam, - if the group is set to DISALLOW No Mail status, the member is unsubscribed and sent the usual resubscribe message and link. - if the group is set to ALLOW No Mail, the member is set to No Mail. Frankly, I wouldn¡¯t want a lot of members in my groups that I couldn¡¯t easily send a message to. We don¡¯t use Special Notice often, but it is a useful tool. With No Mail enabled, you can¡¯t do that. Also I am not sure that people will be any less confused when they stop getting mail, even if they send a message to the group. I think there were proposals for a better message. Not sure if that happened. The question then would be - do group managers whose groups allow No Mail setting agree to setting the subscriber to No Mail if they or their email provider mark something as spam. Frances |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI thought it might be helpful, or reassuring to know why I did not respond to the poll, as others may have the same reasoning. I have made an assumption, whether accurate or not, that Mark's FBL agreement with some ISPs requires that they be 'dismembered'.? He may not have a choice, so all of our ideas may be moot. This idea is also posted in the "beta" group but it was suggested to post it here too.? ?A member there suggested we offer a short list of categories to illustrate and solicit opinions on how to keep it short and still be inclusive.? ?So here is a quick pass I made with 20 entries, sorted alphabetically including one for "other."?
