If he can't see the green button, go to Admin->Settings->Features->Database and be sure that "Permissions" is set to "Subscribers can view and create tables."

Re: #subgroups change to usual email address #subgroups

One word of warning, something I found when I tested it is that if the (last) sub-group is deleted, leaving only the main group, the [email protected] address will be deleted, leaving only [email protected].

Something I need to raise on beta, methinks.

Re: How to create a new database record

Perfect, Bruce.? Many thanks!? Using my moderator account, I was able to add a row and create a record for my new member.

I later went in and looked at the database through a rank-and-file member's account and found that the bright green "Add Row" button is absent, not viewable or clickable by a member who is not a moderator.? I conclude from that that there's no way at this point for a member to add a record to the database.? Am I correct on that?

If so, that might be something worthy of adding to the wish list.? If other groups use their databases as my group does, essentially to show members names and info, it would be helful to have the members themselves create the records.? Make sense, or am I missing something?

Thanks again for your great support!

How Safe (spam proof) is groups.io ???

Hi,
? As both an owner and a moderator of several groups.io groups I'm
hoping that the following has been covered/looking for ways to
cover it ...

? I just a few moments ago approved a new member to a group.
The only info on the request to join was the email address.? That
address - simply due to the email addy itself - made me wonder
about the legitimacy of the requestor.? As in - "did I just approve
a spammer?".??
? Yes, the group is set to "all new members are moderated
(for 2 posts) so if the requestor is a spammer it will be?
caught.

? 1) Can some text (introduction) be Required for all proposed
? ? ? new members?? I'm talking about where groups.io does
? ? ? not even let them submit the request to join unless they
? ? ? have included that text.

? 2) Are there things that we - as Owners/Moderators - can do in
? ? ? the group settings ... other than setting all new members to
? ? ? moderated status?? Is it recommended that we set new
? ? ? members to permanent moderated status?

? 3) I am concerned about this particular new member's request.
? ? ? It -seems- to indicate that the spammers have 'discovered'
? ? ? groups.io and are attempting to gain access.? Are others
? ? ? seeing any such activity?

? 4) Is it possible for a spammer/any one to request membership
? ? ? -without- having to process that request while being online?
? ? ? Can this be done with some kind of bot?? Can someone
? ? ? request membership in a group using only email?

? All comments/recommendations appreciated.? ? ? ? ? ? ?- Jim B.

emails to group instead of sender #issue

Southenders Admin

I am wondering if there is a way to make sure that members only reply to the sender, rather than the group, for an event. My members are getting ticked that even though my site is set up to 'reply to sender', they are all getting the members replies to events.?
Even though I have asked members to reply only to the email on events related to that event, all members are receiving the replies, as they are made out to the email of the site, rather than the individual who created the event.

I would love to be able to put what Shal has on his digest on every event email. But when I try to cut and paste it into the event in the calendar, it does not 'paste'.
Do not reply to this email. To reply to a message, click the Reply link under the message.

Re: HTML Question

This is an outlier, highly unlikely, but you might check that you don't have an anti-scripting tool in place that is tidying up for you. I can remember one case, a few years ago, when I scratched my head for some time over a similar problem and it turned out to be that an add-on to my own browser was interfering. Like I say, not likely, but it got me once. Bruce's points are more likely.

finding file "id number" assigned by groups.io

I got a notice from groups.io that someone had objection to the content of a particular file, but the file was identified only by a groups.io id#.? How do I find what file they are actually talking about?

Message Formatting

I just transferred a bunch of groups and am getting questions about message formatting I can¡¯t answer. There doesn¡¯t seem to be a description of exactly what these settings mean.

What is the default if I don¡¯t check any of these?

Force HTML Emails
Make all emails HTML and remove the plain text digest option.
This one seems clear ¡ª change everything to HTML but what if the message is written in plain text?

Normalize HTML Emails
Strip all different fonts and colors from HTML emails.
What does this do to links? Complaints that links are being stretched out to http addresses rather than the name.

I like the strip out colors and fonts but what else does it do.

Plain Text Only
Strip out HTML messages.
This one seems clear, convert all to plain text ¡ªstretch out links, no colors or formatting, etc.

It would be nice to have a screen shot of a message in all these formats.

Re: Automatic Deletion of Members If Message Marked As Spam #poll

Hi

I wonder whether Mark would be willing to do two things, a compromise.

When ¡°notified¡± about spam,

- if the group is set to DISALLOW No Mail status, the member is unsubscribed and sent the usual resubscribe message and link.

- if the group is set to ALLOW No Mail, the member is set to No Mail.

Frankly, I wouldn¡¯t want a lot of members in my groups that I couldn¡¯t easily send a message to. We don¡¯t use Special Notice often, but it is a useful tool. With No Mail enabled, you can¡¯t do that.

Also I am not sure that people will be any less confused when they stop getting mail, even if they send a message to the group.

I think there were proposals for a better message. Not sure if that happened.

The question then would be - do group managers whose groups allow No Mail setting agree to setting the subscriber to No Mail if they or their email provider mark something as spam.

I thought it might be helpful, or reassuring to know why I did not respond to the poll, as others may have the same reasoning. I have made an assumption, whether accurate or not, that Mark's FBL agreement with some ISPs requires that they be 'dismembered'.? He may not have a choice, so all of our ideas may be moot.

Perhaps you could take the trouble to explain why, exactly.

This entire discussion is becoming uncomfortably polarised, and at the moment I can see no way out of the impasse. The number of responses to the poll is disappointingly small (0.021% of this Forum Membership) and would thus not really be any solid basis on which to make a formal #Suggestion, even if the majority of the tiny percentage is (at the time of writing) in favour of the suggested change.

OK; perhaps we leave things exactly as they are, but I suspect that the matter will crop again in another thread within weeks rather than months.

I am certain of a few points, though: relying on Owner & Moderators to try talk individual members tholugh sorting things on on a per occasion basis is unlikely to work*; simply re- enrolling either by members or Os & Ms without other remedial measures may look like a solution but it probably isn't - it's simply kicking the can down the road; much as we might wish or ask them to, members don't necessarily read any guidance published in wikis; not all members are sufficiently IT - savvy to either find a solution for themselves;? guidance offered - however well intentioned - might be incorrect because that guidance might need to be MSP specific particularly in the case of the less confident IT users.

* Partially a function of how many members a group has; we have >2900.

I would not want a "majority" to completely ignore the views of a "minority" in a matter like this; that said I am very uncomfortable with a minority trying to take the majority hostage by threatening to stomp off if things are made "different". At the moment Jeremy Harrison's amendment to my suggestion looks promising (assuming that it is technically practicable) but it doesn't seem to have attracted any clear support in the comments that followed.

Chris

I don't see how suspending message delivery by a different means (e.g.
No Mail) would be any more effective at resolving the issue.
Q: What is the issue, and what should we do about it?
A: Issue is messages being flagged as spam - with consequent bad effects for Groups.io. What we should do is stop sending messages, until/unless they will not be flagged as spam.
Reason for setting to no mail rather than unsubscribing, is that it avoids a 'Msg marked as spam -> Unsubscribed -> Resubscribe -> msg sent -> marked as spam -> round we go again' loop. If member is already happily reading messages via web rather than in (spam box) e-mail I would suggest this is likely.?
And the unfriendliness of 'messages to you have been marked as spam (even if you had nothing to do with this), so we don't want you as a member' message (and the last seven words may be read as two, the second being 'off')

An advantage to "dismemberment" is that it correctly handles the other
case: the case where the member has lost interest in the group and used
the "mark as spam" feature of their email interface rather than
unsubscribing. That advice is not uncommon - for example Yahoo Mail's
advice on the subject:

o Unsubscribe from mailing lists
At the bottom of any subscription based email there is an option to
unsubscribe. If you're not sure the email is legit, mark it as spam.
In short, guessing that if you say one thing, you mean another, and we'll do that (rather than what you said). Leading to the repeated 'Why have I been unsubscribed?' queries...

> Better to set them to 'no mail', ...
> ...
> There is the question of what to do about groups where 'no mail' is
> not allowed

As I've mentioned before, I would not propose a mechanism that changes
the user's Email Delivery setting - for that reason among others.
Instead I'd propose a new subscription status.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/6782
With a new Email Delivery setting ('Forced No Email'? - also for 'bouncing' members?), or a comment (Forced because...) attached to existing 'No-mail' option - because, as it is being changed, it needs to be reflected there, I'd be happy with this - and, on reflection, this (including changes to to E-mail delivery settings as described) probably is better than just setting to no mail.
?
The only advantage (over the current "dismemberment" mechanism) that I
can see being gained by this extra complexity is that it converts the
member to effectively a web-only member of the group. And for some that
might be the best answer.
I would say that it is; and that it should be the default answer.

Jeremy
