Re: How to add a ToC to your wiki pages

LeeAnne,

Yes making those 0.0 things was the numbers level (did not understand
what that was - thought it might be a limit on how many "topics" you
could have)
As I think you've discovered, it sets the nesting depth for the TOC; from h1 down to the number you set. I normally use 1 or 2, I haven't had a document large enough for 3 or more to make sense.

I do remember seeing it in the past and just NOW found the crazy thing!
Heh, yes. I see you've put a yellow highlight on the "magic wand" that is the style tool.

Why are snips suddenly fuzzy? The same snip pasted in an email message
was clear and sharp.
Images pasted inline in a message body are automatically resized if they are taller or wider than 640 pixels. Images attached as files may be resized, according to a group setting.

Re: New to the group.

Jill,

Thank you for your replies. I have joined the Beta group David (as you
suggested) but someone else had previously advised against it due to it
possibly being confusing if you are not of that ilk. I'm not and have
found the messages so far way beyond me, so I will switch to no email
from that group and ask any further basic questions here. Is that okay?
It is more than ok, it is recommended - by owner of the beta list as well as myself (owner of this list).

Lee Anne,

I gave up on the TOC ages ago. I'm not calling it fully functional yet.

Okay I've figured it out. ?Just didn't understand what all the numbers were for when adding the Toc. ?Choose 1 and you get proper numbers, choose more and you get the 0.0.0.stuff -?

LeeAnne,

I tried to follow your directions for putting a ToC in a wiki page.
Things didn't work so well: ...
Interesting.

Did you perhaps make those paragraphs h4 style, and not have any h1, h2 or h3? I can reproduce your results that way, as long as I also set the number of levels up to 4.

Any ideas what I need to do?
Start at h1 style and descend from there?

I know it looks huge, but that's what the TOC mechanism uses. Unfortunately the style selection in Groups.io's wiki is rather limited. I've just learned to live with it.

A blatently missing piece is the photo insert toolbar button. Mark knows, but hasn't gotten the round tuit yet. You can use the code view tool to insert <img> tags that reference images hosted within the group or externally, but that's rather wonkish.

I'd like to clarify Shal's answer. Each group owner can decide if attachments are allowed on any specific group. Some allow it and some don't. GMF does.

Re: New to the group.

Jill,

1. Am I correct in understanding there is no need to create any sort of
account when joining?
An account is created for you automatically the first time you type in your email address (or send a +subscribe command by email, or reply to an invitation by email).

E.g. As you know, with Yahoo you have to create a Yahoo account (unless
opting for email only)
In Groups.io whatever email address you use is your account ID for log in - you don't need to create a new account name or ID specific to Groups.io.

I'm waffling but in short is this correct - you join groups IO with your
own email address simply and easily without needing to create any
accounts or new email address?
Groups.io doesn't run its own email service, so no you don't create a new email address there. You use whichever address at whatever service you prefer.

A nifty feature of Groups.io is that you don't even need to set a password for yourself (though you can if you prefer to). When you type in your email address at the site you are prompted to verify your email address - the site sends you an email with a link in it. When you click that link you are logged into the site for 30 days. While you're logged in you can go to your profile and set a password if you like, or when your 30 days is up you can just have the site send you another login email.

This is real handy on mobile devices, where typing a strong password can be a chore.

2. Can you attach photos to emails to send to the group?
Yes, either posting by email or posting on site.

There isn't anything as organized as an "Intro to Groups.io" document, but Groups.io does have a fledgling help system, the link to it is in the bottom bar of all Groups.io pages, the URL for it is:

You can also find a grab-bag of information in GMF's wiki - it is our goal to be a helpful resource to Groups.io moderators and have information there that supplements what's in the site's Help system. For a link to the Wiki, see the list of group resources in the left column when you're in any group's pages. While you're visiting GMF's pages that list will be GMF's resources. The URL for GMF's wiki is: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki

Feel free to suggest more Wiki topics, or to write them! Writing a wiki page uses a composition window that's nearly identical to that used when composing a New Topic or Reply on site, so it is pretty easy to do.

One informal convention you might see used when comparing Groups.io features to Yahoo Groups features is to "decorate" a group name to indicate which service. Hence I can say that in GMF@ the list of group resources is on the left, like classic Y!Groups, whereas at Y!GMF they are across a bar near the top, the "Neo" style.

Re: clearing custom invites

Hmm, looks like something got broken somewhere along the way. It used to be that as you typed in the Custom area, it changed in the Invitation box above so you could see what it looked like. I can get rid of it in the Custom box by refreshing the page in the browser, but it never disappears from the Invitation box and comes back next time I go to the Invite page. Looks like a problem for Support.

Re: Do message #'s stay the same when you transfer from Y!?

Unfortunately, I don't believe the numbers stay the same, but I haven't moved posts so can't be sure.

As far as I've seen, there's no limit to the number of posts transferred. There's one group with over 200,000 that were moved over.

Re: Do message #'s stay the same when you transfer from Y!?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Oddly enough I had reason to search back in my group archives recently. They go back to 1999 so even before Yahoo groups took over. What surprised me was that although the posts are numbered they are not in numerical order but in places randomly organised.

Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be transferred I was wondering?
