Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Maria,

Thank you! I'm just posted on @beta about the fact that when you
follow a thread or threads you start they come into your inbox as
individual emails but lack all the usual footers and links. Not sure
why.
Me either. Sounds like a bug. Hopefully Mark will pick up on it.

You'll have that mobile interface honed yet... I don't often use the mobile interface, but I'm sure many will be glad of your efforts, even if they never know it was you.

Also noticing the mobile version doesn't let you see what you see on desktop in the subscriptions page vis-¨¤-vis hashtags and threads followed.?

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Maria,

Is there a wiki page or can someone help me understand how you
"follow" a thread or a hashtag?
Not yet, but that's a great suggestion. The whole set of Mute and Follow features could use a clear explanation. And also some long-deferred work from Mark, but that's a separate problem.

The basic concept is that there are two ways of selecting threads. In the Advanced Preferences section of your subscription(s) either choose to receive "All Messages" - except the ones you mute; or receive "Following Only".

If you elect to receive "All Messages" then there is a Mute this thread link at the bottom of the messages you receive. Use it and you then do not receive further messages in that thread.

If you elect to receive "Following Only" and "First Message also" then there is a Follow this thread link at the bottom of those thread starters. Use it if the thread interests you. Once you're following a thread I think the link becomes an "Unfollow Thread" link.

On the web, these tools are available primarily in the Messages and Hashtags pages of the Your Groups page (click on the Groups.io logo in the upper left corner). The work I think Mark is missing is to bring this functionality to the group level, as viewing filters while looking at a single group's archive.

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Perhaps there is a specific way to follow a thread; but, I'm thinking that if there are threads that members do not want to follow, they can click on Mute This Thread below the message.? Since I tend to read all messages that come into my inbox, I haven't really tested it out.?

I'm unclear about how you work all that out in the settings but think it's a great asset in groups.io and will help folks who feel bombarded by email groups feel more in control.

Thank you!

Re: new group creation

There was a group created on 5/23 where the name is 32 characters long, so I don't think it's length. Unless there's a space sneaking in or some other character it doesn't like, this sounds like a question for Support.

Re: new group creation

Donald, Judy,

There was a problem with either underscores or hyphens or both a while
back.
It was underscores, not hyphens. The situation came about with groups with subgroups - the group name gets used as a "subdomain" aka "hostname" in the email address and the web address. Underscore is not a legal character there.

My guess is that they made it impossible to set up a group that uses
those so that the members don't see the same issues as I did.
That they did, but it doesn't seem to relate directly to Judy's case. The name she's trying to use is 30 characters long, it is possible that Mark implemented a shorter limit for some reason.

Re: new group creation

Judy,

There was a problem with either underscores or hyphens or both a while
back. When I used one of those in a group name I couldn't reply by
email. I wrote support and they found a glitch. The workaround was to
not use them, so I changed the group's name and there are no hyphens
or dashes in the name now, and I can post and reply from email instead
of being forced to do so from the site.

My guess is that they made it impossible to set up a group that uses
those so that the members don't see the same issues as I did.

Re: adding members questions

Jay,

1. so i gather that one can not directly add members in io groups,
but have to invite them, just as in yahoo groups?
In Basic (free) groups that's true.

If you purchase the upgrade to Premium then you have a Direct Add feature. You can buy it as a one-time purchase giving you 30 days of Premium, or as an automatic renewal. Either way is $10 per month. See the Upgrade page (bottom of the list of group pages on the left). Also the "Plans" link, in the bottom bar on any Groups.io page,
/static/pricing

2. is there the same choice in io groups as in yahoo groups between
being email only vs. having a login id to access the groups io web
site?
Yes, except in Groups.io it is vastly easier to obtain web access if you want it. Your "login ID" is just your email address.

One can subscribe to a Groups.io group "email only" in basically the same three ways as a Yahoo Group:

o Use the email subscribe command (see the group's home page).
o Reply by email to an invitation from the group's management.
o Be directly added by the group's management (no longer in Y!Groups).

The email command will send back an address confirmation email, reply by email to it as well.

To gain web access go to the site and follow the instructions. All you really need to do is enter your email address. Groups.io will send an address confirmation email to you. If you click through the link in that email (or the one in an Invitation!) you are then logged in for 30 days of web access.

To continue past the initial 30 days you may either 1) set a password for future logins, or 2) ask for another log-in email (another 30 days). You can keep asking for log-in by email indefinitely, you don't have to ever set a password. Even if you have set a password you can still ask for a log-in by email, if that would be more convenient at the moment (say you forgot your password, or you're away from the sticky-note where you wrote it down).

Just tell them 'wiki' means 'file' in the groups.io 'dialect.' It's exactly the same thing.

The Wiki feature gives you that ease. But I see Mark already suggested that (beta@#6961).
/g/beta/thread/803822

One writes a page using the same editing tool (with formatting buttons) as is used for creating a message (New Topic or Reply). The main difference is that the Wiki pages don't come with any folders or other hierarchy. The default is just a list of the existing pages, but you can create a home page for the Wiki that organizes the other pages any way that you see fit. See GMF's Wiki for an example of a handmade Wiki home page.

Hmm... The Trello page has an empty list under "Files". Perhaps you should ask again in your thread, or this earlier one:

Many of us use the Wiki for this purpose. If you don't need the specific content to be in the Files section, just use a Wiki page instead.?

future reference and the only way they could be added is if you
upload them from a file. It would be so much easier to just create a

The first thing on my wish list is to be able to write txt files for the files portion of groups.io.? Sure, but that would not be enough to match even what Yahoo provides now. Every member should be able to see all posts by other members. Already, members are complaining that they can't find this, as they could in Yahoo. This is now #1 on my wishlist. I see it as a gaping and obvious hole in the system. Hopefully Mark will do something about it soon.

Re: Is there a way to find all the posts you or others have written?

Thank you all.

As a moderator, I need all those things listed that it seems Mark is working on vis-¨¢-vis searching the message archive by author/ email address etc ( with actual links to the messages) or simply search results like the normal search function brings up.

As a member of groups that I am not an admin on - it would indeed be nice to have a way to find my own posts. Maybe it'll just be via the advanced search option/ search by author when/if that gets fixed. Or as Shal suggests maybe an activity history tab/log? Maybe a listing of "MY POSTS" in one's profile? Visible to the member only?
