Re: Is there a way to find all the posts you or others have written?

J_Olivia Catlady

This has been VERY high on my personal wishlist for a long time. It's a glaring hole, especially with respect to Yahoo.

This is odd. I can search Istanbul and get results, no clue if it is all or some of the posts with this word, Maria does not find anything. It may be that the search is finding the word only from the heading and not the body of the text as all the messages found a search of Istanbul have the name in the heading or title of the post. Put your name in the heading such as From Maria: and see if this allows a search of what you have posted that way. Since you group is apparently not public, you cannot use Google to search the contents of messages on your group. Seeking only comes up once in a search of that word on your list and I suspect that word has been used many more times in the posts of your group.

I hope that this helps.

The member used ?the group post email instead of submitting the message to owner ?email..

Re: Special notices

Glad to hear that "special notice" preempts digest delivery choice. Yes, can you forward your suggestions to Mark on Beta? That would be super.?

Thanks, J_catlady and Shal.

Re: repeat of original post in replies (not deliberately quoted)

Thank you Shal.

We don't have enough test users in our test group to see if there is a pattern yet... but i am pleased that groups.io seems to handle it better than other services we use/have used.

Whatever Mark has done so far seems to be working better than elsewhere.

Re: repeat of original post in replies (not deliberately quoted)

Maria,

I am wondering if others here have managed to figure out what the
pattern is with original posts being carried over in replies?
There are several factors at work - which is why it is inconsistent.

First is the user's email interface: different interfaces use different "styles" of distinguishing the quoted material.

In plain text there's a reasonably strong convention of word-wrapping the quoted lines slightly shorter than the normal lines, then inserting a marker such as "> " at the beginning of each line - as I've done in this message. In HTML message formats indentation is often used, sometimes together with a vertical bar on the left.

Some we see in the pending message - but once approved - they nicely
disappear in the web interface and the digest.
In the pending list the message is shown to you pretty much "as received". But when displayed in the Messages section the system attempts to detect and hide trailing "bottom-quotes" and provide an expander ("..." button) to let you see them if you want. In the digest it simply omits them.

But I am seeing on the @beta group that every now and then posts come
through with the entire original post underneath the reply.
I've noticed that too, and I think it must be that sometimes the user's email interface formatted the quote in a way that escaped Groups.io's detection. It seems to happen most with HTML formatted messages.

Wondering in those instances in which this happens if there is a
common cause and if as mods there is anything we can do to educate
those members to whom this happens so that we can reduce the amount
of duplicate carry over of the OP in replies.
I haven't looked but it is possible that there's a correlation with specific email interfaces that those members use. But whether the user can do anything to change it I don't know. I suspect that in most cases the only thing the member could do would be vigilance in trimming the quotes.

Shal,
I'll let you run with the ball if you want to suggest the combo on beta. ;)

Good idea. Maybe also an automatically applied #hashtag in the subject line, such as the calender events have.

I know this happens in Y! groups a bit and with other listservs but am seeing it's very much better here on groups.io.

Re: Special notices

J,

I personally wish Groups.io would automatically append a "special
notice" banner at the top of special notice messages. It would make
things easier for the moderators and also provide an explanation to
members of why they're getting a message when they're on digest of
special notices. I might suggest it in beta.

Re: Special notices

Frances,

If someone gets a digest, would they get a Special Notice message right
away? I would assume so. It should override their delivery options and
deliver the message immediately (or immediately as possible!)
Yes, I just checked that in my shalstest@.

It may also arrive in the digest, I won't know about that until later.

It sounds like you unticked it. I personally wish Groups.io would automatically append a "special notice" banner at the top of special notice messages. It would make things easier for the moderators and also provide an explanation to members of why they're getting a message when they're on digest of special notices. I might suggest it in beta.

I just checked and my digest members received the special notice, too. So yours should have received it.

It's all working for me. To check (not using the log) if a special notice got sent, you can go into a special notices member and check their email delivery history. Yes, I sent a notice this morning. It hog logged thst way in my activity log and was received by a special notice member. Digest members would not receive it until the digest goes out. I haven't ?double checked that but I'm fairly sure.

Abut a couple of questions before I resend it -

I just recently changed my settings so that there was no "no mail" option. The two who had been "special notices only" got changed in the members list to "special notices only". Perhaps that isn't working.

Has anyone sent a Special Notice recently and noticed its behaviour? J_Catlady?

Thanks!

Re: Special notices

It will be in your own "activity history" under your member page. It says "sent special message."

Special notices

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know how I can tell if a post actually went "special notice"? I did tick the box on the web posting interface. But it doesn't say anything about it when I look at activity.

Thanks.
