Everyone, please read this. It's right in the EasyTransfer instructions!!!!!!! "If you receive an error when inviting the [email protected] member to join your Yahoo Group, that's ok, the invite still went out. You do not need to submit a second invite." Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
I would create at least one subgroup when you create the list because creating the subgroup changes the address of the main group:
Initial group name: [name]@groups.io Subgroup created: facilities@[name].groups.io After subgroup created the main list becomes: main@[name].groups.io Messages to [email protected] are still delivered but when the directions use one name and that name is changed to something else, people get confused. Logically, two names means they are two different things. It¡¯s also hard to go back and correct all the references in the instructions to the new name. That happened to me yesterday when I had shortened the name of a brand new list and didn¡¯t realize that the intro message still had the old name. When the first member tried to visit the group¡¯s website using the links, the site said the group didn¡¯t exist. Most important is that after the subgroup is created, you can change ¡°main¡± to another name which makes more sense to your group. For members who never use the subgroups, or even don¡¯t know they exist, ¡°main¡± means nothing. It¡¯s also confusing to have an address changed midstream to main@[name].groups.io when that has not been the naming convention at Yahoo, etc., where they have 20 years of experience. Do it before you write any directions and make any announcements. Sharon ---- Sharon Villines, Washington DC "Save Our Planet. It's the only one with chocolate." |

Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
My advice would be to create at least one sub-group before the migration (if not too late for you) - so your 'primary' group is already established logically as a sub-group of your group (which it will become when the first sub-group is created), and avoid potential confusion for your members if this change happens after the migration.

Re: Messages not always emailed
#issue
Norm,
I created a message to my trial group. The first time I posted it, theAre you certain of that? Perhaps it was delivered to your spam folder, or some other location of your email service's choosing. I have set that topics must include a hashtag, and in the firstAnother possibility is that the hashtag you used has the No Email option checked. That would prevent email distribution of the message. See the help section J cited for details: /static/help#hashtags When I reposted the message placing the hashtag at the front of theWas it the same hashtag? Must the hashtag come first, before the subject? No. In fact typical usage is to put them at the end. Re: unsubscribed for deleting mail in the spam folder
Rachel,
I never unsubscribed from this list yet I received 2 emails that I wasIf the member did in fact delete group messages while they were in his/her spam folder then the unsubscription is normal. The answer is to always remove group messages from your spam folder if they are delivered there, and never put them there. Why would this be part of the list software?Because the member's email service demanded it be so. They told Groups.io that the member had marked a list message as spam, and they expect Groups.io to stop sending messages to that address. It is unfortunate that some email services treat deletion from the spam folder as equivalent to marking it as spam. Particularly unfortunate when both the delivery to the spam folder, and the eventual deletion from it may be done by the email service without any action by the member. Re: Transferring to a subgroup
#subgroups
#transfer
Marv,
Can the archives from a Y! group be transferred into a subgroup?Yes. If so, what is the recommended procedure?Follow the usual procedure for transferring the special interest Y!Group to groups.io, and in the "Go" email name the subgroup as the destination. See also this note at the bottom of the transfer instructions: "NOTE: If the new group is a subgroup at Groups.io, you will receive two transfer notices, one for transfering the members to the parent group, and one for transfering the members to the subgroup (all members of a subgroup must be members of the parent group)." One issue is ownership of the subgroup. I am listed as owner andOwners of the primary group are implicitly owners of every subgroup. That is, they have access and control whether listed in the subgroup's Members list or not. but they don't appear on the join list. How do I handle this?"Join list"? Assuming you mean the subgroup's Direct Add page, those already explicitly added to the subgroup aren't listed for Direct Add. But those not in the subgroup's Members list ought to be in it's Direct Add list. Shal -- Help: /static/help GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Managing bouncers
#membership
Nancy,
One of my two red Bs answered, she didn¡¯t change email, she¡¯s nowI don't know if that alone should have changed her from red to blue, but I suppose it might have. What does she do?While her status is blue B ("bouncing") Groups.io will periodically send her a notification. She should respond to one of them - that will take her out of bounce processing altogether. Now what, wait ?1) Click on her row in the Bouncing list (anywhere except the checkbox) and then click the Email Delivery History button at the top. This should provide information about why her email address is deemed to be bouncing. Under Recent Bounces, the Reason column will include the three-digit code and text explanation provided to Groups.io by her email service. For example, one of the red B ("bounced") addresses here in GMF has this Reason: "550 5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try double-checking the recipient's email address for typos or unnecessary spaces. Learn more at /mail/?p=NoSuchUser w16-v6si1314530plp.276 - gsmtp" In this case it is pretty clear that I'd be unable to contact that person off-list, not unless I knew another means of contact. 1a) In your member's case the Reason might indicate something that could be fixed. You could copy that and send it to her so that she can inquire about it with tech support for her email service. 2) Tell her to look for notifications from Groups.io in her spam folder or anywhere else her email service may be delivering them. 3) Optionally, manually send her another bounce probe. Re: Edited messages
Dave,
It is not always clear why it has been edited, sometimes for trivialOne can always click on the View/Reply Online link at the bottom of the emailed message, then on the right side click the Edited button, then the Compare Revisions button. For example, this message: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/3576 I think that in the case of an edit the comparison page should be emailed rather than the new message. In most cases that would make it clear whether the edit was trivial (e.g. spelling correction) or meaningful (e.g. inserting the missing word "not" or otherwise changing the meaning of the post). The downside is that the comparison is text-only, with the original formatting stripped, which in some cases may make it hard to read. I'd also like access to the comparison from the pending edit. Can we turn this option off - maybe on an individual basis (ie 'IThat could be a dangerous choice in the case of an edit that changes the meaning of an important message. Excluding fotos from transfer
Hello,
my yahoo group has hundreds of fotos of no more existing members. But deletion of fotos is a mess in yahoo groups, some of them impossible to delete. So I?d rather exlude fotos from being transferred to groups.io. Is this possible? Or does transfer mean all or nothing? Regards Victoria |

Yes, you can turn it off in your group. It was a hard-won battle in beta, but now even Mark has turned it off there.

I apologize for editing a message here today. I am so used to doing it as a moderator in my group - moderators have the option to edit a message without sending the edited message to the group - that I forgot about the ramifications. I at least would have filled in the ¡®reason for edit¡¯ box. I¡¯ve turned editing off in my own group for just the reasons you cite, and was a hardcore early supporter of the option to disable it. I agree. I rejected a person's introduction as it was too short. They just said, and I kid you not, "hi." I told them to maybe ask a question then introduce themselves or something like that. I also reject "test" "testing" etc.

Edited messages
groups.io has a feature where people can edit existing messages in the
archives and a new version of that message is then distributed to the group. The edited messages start with 'edited message follows'. I can see the value of this, and it has happened several times today on this group. But as an email only user I find it somewhat confusing, quite often opening the edited version (or versions...) before I have opened the original. It is not always clear why it has been edited, sometimes for trivial typos, and usually only serves to increase the email inbox size (which seems to have been quite high for this group of late!). Can we turn this option off - maybe on an individual basis (ie 'I don't want to receive edited messages')? Of course I know the answer will be no... Dave |
