Re: Question about "MUTE"?
I put in a vote for individual mute. Sometimes a poster simply gets my personal goat. They dwell on a line of argument that I am tired of, or get repetitious in ways that I find personally annoying. These aren't general offenses that call for shutdown to all members, but a mute option that hides these posts from just me would be a great convenience, hopefully not often used. I once dropped out of a group that I enjoyed, but not overly, because I got tired of a frequent poster. If I had had a mute option, I'd still be in the group. If I were the implementer, I'd make it a specialized filter that could be turned on and off on the web site so I could occasionally check if the thorn in my side had blunted over time.

Re: Question about "MUTE"?
I know there are all sorts of groups but I really don't understand the desire for the mute of individuals
If someone is posting things that others or the moderator does not like, moderate them and warn them, and if they continue ban them Why would you want a divisive poster? And if a subscriber doesn't want a persons posts, email clients will divert or delete a particular post from or includes a given address or name Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) |
Re: Question about "MUTE"?
My group would also like the ability to mute other members. We have one member who often posts snarky, provocative comments and people complain about him, but he does not step over the line. I periodically put him on moderation.
?
But often people write that they are interested in the thread and therefore don't want to mute the topic. They have asked me if they can just not see his posts.

Some programs can be set up to delete those instead of re-routing them. That might be a way to accomplish what you wish and allow you to stay connected to the group, just letting the email program do its work so you avoid reading those messages. The downside would be that you might miss something important. Having them diverted to a separate folder would allow you to review subject lines to see if you wish to read one of them. I had a member ask me about "muting" other members, but I can't seem to find anything about that on GIO. Is that a GIO function, and, if so, where is it located and what exactly does it do?
?
Thanks for bringing this to light again. The beta group 2016 discussion is locked.? I chose to leave 2 groups on GIO because I could not "unfollow" a group member. It wasn't a personality thing. In one group the posts by the member were no more than links and attachments to the group. The posts were at least once, sometimes twice daily. It wasn't only me, others also were annoyed, but because the poster was a "founding" member of the club and interim president, those of us that posted about this annoying behavior were told we had to accept it or leave. Which we did. I was sorry to miss out on the many other benefits but that was the only solution open to me.? The second group I left was because of a poster who routinely posted replies to technical inquires with information that was confusing and contradictory. It was often glaringly incorrect. The links in the posts were broken or non functional. Initially I posted replies with corrected information and links to help the OP to resolve the issue. But that soon became too wearing on me. I don't have time to read topics subjects of interest to me that contain a body filled with nonsense. Just easier to leave the group.? In both situations I informed the group owner that was why I left. (As did other members who posted the same thing before leaving those groups. If "unfollow" or "mute member" were a feature under the control of the member, I would happily return to both groups. However, given that group owners have posted that such a feature should be owner or moderator controlled, then such a feature would be of limited use to us members.? I do belong to a couple of groups that I cannot leave without also resigning a club membership. I use "web only" for one group and log in routinely to catch up so as to avoid numerous emailed posts by the same couple of annoying people. Its easy to see their names and skip reading those replies. The Web Only option doesn't work if real time communication is central to why I joined the group. -- Sandi Dickenson |
Need hashtags for replies
Our group would like to make replies to a topic be distinctive.? Our Topic is a Question.? Each Reply is an Answer from a different source (Council A Meeting, Council B Meeting, etc.), so a hashtag seems needed / helpful.
In fact, we are considering making specific Date a hashtag of the Topic so we might then have 2 Topic hashtags:? Location and Date. |
