Re: No email bouncers

I have member that was transferred from Y to G, and contacted me through my personal email to tell me; "- My ¡®reply¡¯ message below was rejected by the receiving server." This person is in the members lists, no bounce symbol, does not have a Y address, and nothing unusual when looking at their membership information. I changed their email delivery to All Messages from Full Featured Digest, and maybe that will make a difference.

Email got changed in my profile at GroupsIO webpage

Hi,

I am new to Groups.io, like most here I am trying to set up to move my groups over from YahooGroups.? I am not savvy about this stuff, and I think I have already screwed something up.

I set up my new groups under this email, babmay11@ [isp1],?which is the email I want to use for every thing.? I did a test to subscribe my secondary email which is babmay11@ [isp2].? It did do that, but now when I am trying to go back to the webpage, it is using my gmail account as the ID email, and I can't get to the groups I set up under the babmay11@ [isp1] email.? HELP!

Thanks,

Barb B

Are you sure it's not because she's been marking messages as spam and getting removed automatically, then clicking on the resubscribe link? What do the actual log entries say?

Re: No email bouncers

Richard,

Thanks for the info. I've looked in the Email Delivery History for
quite a lot (but by no means all) of these members and it has never
shown anything at all.
That might be worthy of a report to [email protected] - I think it should say something even if only to tell you it can't show you info from another group.

(the group doesn't send any special notices or other non-post emails
that I've noticed).
The process of joining your group, whether transferred in, Direct ADDed, or otherwise would have sent them some notifications, and if these were rejected that would put them into bouncing. But that still should have shown something in their history.

I was surprised to discover that there are 3100 non-bouncing members
who have also opted for no emails, almost half the membership, so it's
obviously a popular option:
If these are members copied over from a Yahoo Group their delivery option would have been copied as well.

I'd be interested to know what their modus operandi for using the
group is, as periodically checking the website for new posts of
interest seems grossly inefficient to me. Perhaps I should ask them...
Mayhaps. I know there are many people who prefer web access. If your group has public archives the could be using an RSS feed for notification of new messages.

That's not good. That long footer comes out in two sections. I put the URL of our website in the Message Footer section of my group and it's coming out between the two sections. Doesn't make sense and looks very strange. Also, many of the member of my group only have email access and don't even have Internet access at all, so none of the links in the automatic footer are useful to them. I was thinking of putting some of the email commands in the group's Message Footer section, for them to use, but it will be so long and if it comes out after the automatic footer, it's pretty much useless.

I will write to Mark about that. Do you think I should write to support or to the beta group?

There has been some discussion and requests for this on beta@, and (and possibly others.)? Both are now moderated, but you can still add comments if they're approved.? I don't see anything about it on yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Mark isn't aware/working on it.

I'm using Firefox Quantum v. 58.0 64-bit for Ubuntu, and only the two first icons show.? But I guess I can just use Chrome when I want to delete files -- everything else seems to work.

PG Offline

We're in the processing of migrating from yahoo groups - I have backed up a good chunk of our messages via PG Offline and am wondering if there's a way to transfer those to groups.io without having to go back through yahoo?

Thanks so much, Shal, for your help.

It may depend on how you downloaded them. If you used the Chrome app from YahooGroupedia that's probably the best, as it will include the full view source of each message. If you screen-scraped them from the Conversations section that probably wouldn't work with the tools he has. It is also possible he'd be willing to update the archive using the tools he's written.

Yes, I did use the Chrome App and will write to Mark to ask him. Right now, it's working well for downloading member lists and for a small group of messages, but not for a whole message archive. It's too bad it has come to that with Yahoogroups.

It is an account setting. Choose Account from the drop-list on your name, on the right in the top blue banner.

Too late now for the transferred members, but there's also a default you can set for new members who join in the future. Find that on the Default Sub Settings tab of your group's Settings page.

This is great. I did this for myself and for the group. I am only sorry I did not see this when I was going through the settings before the transfer. I am going to send an email to the members to explain it to them. No one has asked about it, but anyone who reads online must be confused, as we are 10 hours ahead of PST.

I had another question, but didn't write it down, and now forgot it. Oh, well. When I remember, I'll just have to send another message. :)

Thanks again.

Hmm. Doesn't really matter now, but I am using Firefox (57.0.4 64-bit) and it shows up for me.

I tried using Chrome instead of Firefox (both on Ubuntu), and I can now see all four icons, so it seems to be a problem with Firefox.

Re: How do I delete files?

I'm seeing only two icons: A pencil (for editing) and a pair of scissors (for moving).? There are some very small squiggles to the right of the scissors, looking somewhat like a ' and a . , but nothing happens when I press them.

Re: When not to transfer a Yahoo Group list.

Different answers may be right for different groups.? I own several book groups and associated groups that have operated on Yahoo for a long time.? I am moving one of the groups but I am not going to transfer all of the members or all of the old messages.

One of these groups has been inactive for some time and I am not going to do anything with it.? It can sit on yahoo or die.? The other group has about 10 active members out of 700 members in the group.? It also has messages related to discussions going back to 1996.? This group existed on another list serve before that -- the original messages were not migrated to Yahoo when the group moved there and I have made the decision not migrate messages from the Yahoo group to Groups.io.? I sent out a special message to the members that says that as of Feb 1, discussion will be held in a new group in Groups.io, have changed the cover page of the group to point to the new group and set up a Facebook page for the group with information about the move. ?

As an owner/moderator, you should see four little icons next to each file name. One of them is a trash can for deleting. This is how it looks in my group. Are you seeing something else?

Re: No email bouncers

Shal

Thanks for the info. I've looked in the Email Delivery History for quite a
lot (but by no means all) of these members and it has never shown anything
at all.

So the only reasonable explanation seems to be, as you suggest, that they are members of other groups where they have opted for email delivery, but are bouncing there (the group doesn't send any special notices or other non-post emails that I've noticed).

I find it rather unhelpful that these members show up in the bouncing list, as I definitely wouldn't want to remove them. I was surprised to discover that there are 3100 non-bouncing members who have also opted for no emails, almost half the membership, so it's obviously a popular option: I'd be interested to know what their modus operandi for using the group is, as periodically checking the website for new posts of interest seems grossly inefficient to me. Perhaps I should ask them...

Just as a matter of interest, I recently removed about 900 fully bouncing members, and I'd say probably 99% of them were yahoo addresses,. Of the small proportion that I checked, the delivery history consistently showed the bouncing to have mostly occurred during the latter part of December 2017. It's difficult to avoid the feeling that there was something systemically wrong in Yahoo at the time (no surprise there then...), but I wonder how many of these were members who suddenly stopped receiving messages from the group through no fault of their own and have been wondering why?

The bounce handling in Groups.io covers more than just message posts. It
also covers Welcome and other sorts of notices and email from the system (as
well as messages in groups other than yours!).

If you open the membership page for one of those members (click on the
member's row in the table, anywhere but the checkbox) then select the "Email
Delivery History" tab it may tell you which message, and why it bounced.

How do I delete files?

I have just joined groups.io and I am in the process of migrating a group from yahoogroups.

Re: We've moved! Now I have some questions

Debbie,

1. The last day or so of messages in the old group don't show up. Is
it because the download Mark used was done a day before the transfer?
I think that's correct. The problems with copying Files and other content probably spread out the copy operations more than they normally are.

I downloaded those messages. If I offer the .txt file of those
downloaded messages that I downloaded, would Mark be able to use that
and add them?
Yeah, that one's for Mark.

2. At the time of the transfer there were only two members on the
groups.io (my own addresses). In the message from groups.io telling me
the transfer was complete, in the section "The following email
addresses were not added", there were four that said "already
subscribed". The other two were definitely not on the subscription
list before the transfer. The group was not in the directory at the
time and I only ever saw '2' as the number of members.
That's odd, but beyond checking to see that they are now in the group I don't think I'd worry about it.

Could it be they were already a member of a different goups.io
group, so were 'in the system'?
No, that shouldn't matter. Their subscriptions would still need to be added in your group.

3. I noticed that if you change to digest, you will start receiving
digests from the first message after you changed. This means that
digests are not the same for every member. What's the point of that?
Doesn't it make sense for all digest subscribers to have identical
digests?
That's not how digests work here - they are individually crafted. That's because members can mute and follow topics or hashtags. See also:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/3244

4. ... more frustrating is the time being used is US-PST. I looked
around the settings and couldn't find a way to set, at least my own
account, if not the whole group, to my local time zone. Is there a

5. I have one more group I would like to transfer. I have all the
members and messages downloaded. Would Mark be able to use those
files, if I send them to him (as mentioned in #1 above?)
Again, a question for Mark. I know he has in the past accepted lists of addresses from other types of email list systems, but that hasn't before been relevant for Yahoo or Google groups.

I would assume 'transfer' then does not need to be a member, right?
Sounds right to me, if you're not planning to have the transfer agent copy photos, files or other content.

7. Was there ever a reason given why there is not a comment box on the
page for joining the group?
I think it is just lack of a round tuit. It has been discussed in beta@ in various forms and is on the to-do list:

8. Is there a way to make changes to or delete the groups.io
<> automatic footer?
No.

10. Just curious. What does Mark get from those of us who only use the
free package, without any advertising?
Same as any "Freemium" service: visibility, word-of-mouth, and the possibility that some of the free users will eventually upgrade.

Can't it be said that those who are paying for the premium service are
carrying us also?
It can. But that's considered normal for this business model.

Shal

We've moved! Now I have some questions

debbie

The move went impressively very smoothly. I have to thank Mark for that. I am going to ask a bunch of questions here. Some of them may be answerable only by Mark (I really don't know), but I would like not to take his time for things that you all can answer here.

It's also thanks to this group for being here, before we made the transfer, that made it so smooth for me. It's a treasure. Thanks, Shal and everyone else!

1. The last day or so of messages in the old group don't show up. Is it because the download Mark used was done a day before the transfer? I downloaded those messages. If I offer the .txt file of those downloaded messages that I downloaded, would Mark be able to use that and add them?

4. I've followed the discussion about the European date format and 24 hours clock. While that sure would be nice to be able to choose, more frustrating is the time being used is US-PST. I looked around the settings and couldn't find a way to set, at least my own account, if not the whole group, to my local time zone. Is there a setting for that?

5. I have one more group I would like to transfer. I have all the members and messages downloaded. Would Mark be able to use those files, if I send them to him (as mentioned in #1 above?) I would assume 'transfer' then does not need to be a member, right?

6. My group is fully moderated, with new subscribers fully moderated. I get the notifications via email and read them there, but I do all the approvals on the website. I'm happy to see some of the features we lost in yahoogroups reinstated here, such as being able to choose from the list of pending messages which to approve at one time. Why does there need to be extra steps to approve a member? I find that I can only do them individually, only with a pull down menu and still needing to confirm it.

7. Was there ever a reason given why there is not a comment box on the page for joining the group?

8. Is there a way to make changes to or delete the automatic footer?

9. We have a website associated with the group. My husband uploaded the coding for joining this list, as provided in the promote section. It shows up on the page, but doesn't work. Does anyone know if there is an issue with this? As a work around, he replaced it with a link to the join page, which is working fine.

10. Just curious. What does Mark get from those of us who only use the free package, without any advertising? Can't it be said that those who are paying for the premium service are carrying us also? Other than the message archive, we only use files. No photos or any other the other features, so don't really need premium.

Thanks, everyone, for all your help!

Re: Increase my chance of "Files" transfer success? #transfer

One thing I ran into with one of my transfers was file names or subject lines in messages with octothorpes (#) in them. Groups.io wants to turn them into hashtags.

Dano

----- Original Message -----
Assuming that the groups transfer process gets going again, I'm curious if there's anything that I can do to maximize the possibility that our "Files" repository makes the trip. I saw at least one post suggesting that putting all of the files in the top level (i.e. directly in "Files") was the way to go. We make use of lots of sub-folders (sometimes several levels deep), so moving our files around could prove to be painful if it isn't likely to help. Can anyone who knows better than I do offer any words of wisdom?

Also, does anyone know if a "do-over" of the "Files" transfer can be attempted later if the original attempt fails?
