Re: Question about Member Notices - Note to Member

Thanks Toby and Duane for your replies. I now get how to set it up and what it's for! I couldn't find anything about it in the Help pages.

Re: question how to set up

thanks. Will check that out. I did see the welcome and goodbye under member notices. I just want the member to get this not the whole group?

Thanks

Anita

Re: Transfer of files from YahooGroups

It should, provided Y! is working and it won't overfill your storage.

Duane

Re: question how to set up

You'll need to set up some Member Notices on the Settings page.? In your case, you'll want at least one for Welcome and one for Goodbye.? You can have multiple of each type and choose which one to make active as the default.

There's been a thread on this very topic this week. You may want to go back and re-read that thread since it has a lot of helpful information.

Basically, Admin > Settings > Member Notices?

Transfer of files from YahooGroups

In then Files section of my YahooGroup we use a lot of folders and some have a hierarchical structure with a root level and sub levels. Provided Yahoo works properly is it possible for the automatic transfer process to transfer all the files in such a structure?

Ken,
Thank you, for that suggestion, that will work for our group.

Frances,
that looks great, thanks for sharing!

Re: Data protection

I think there's a significant difference here between someone joining groups.io
direct and giving their own information, and someone being transferred
automatically from Yahoo groups or elsewhere. The latter could possibly be
problematic under GDPR, and may lead Yahoo to prevent it to protect themselves.
I'll check the wording when I get a few minutes (I've got a PDF copy, but it's
a big document), but I think the main problem would be theirs for passing on
personal details without prior permission.

The implications of GDPR for small clubs and societies is still not
that clear, even though May is not long to go (and I could mean May as
in our PM..). Consent may mean just a box on the join form that one has
to tick ('I have read the terms and conditions') or it may demand
something else like an email reply. Who knows, I suspect life will
carry on just as it has done since the computer was invented.

Is The Subscription Link Editable?

Mark Bielecki

My second question for the day about my new group:

The group is publicly listed by requires moderator approval to join.

When a prospective subscriber/member clicks on the?"+ Apply For Membership In This Group" link the subscription page that pops up requests the prospective member's email address (see below).

Because joining this group requires that the prospective subscriber/member meets certain eligibility requirements is it possible to edit that page to add a couple of qualifiers (such as "Are you a member of the XYZ profession or industry" or "Who referred you to this group") so as to reduce the necessity of multiple back and forth emails for prospective subscribers/members whose email addresses we don't recognize as belonging to somebody who meets the subscriber/membership criteria?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best,

Mark Bielecki

Re: How To Set User Name?

Mark,

A new member to my new group wishes to have a User Name, but on his
Subscription/Group Profile tab it reads "*User Name* Not Set" and
there is no obvious place to set a User Name.
There are two names the member might wish to set.

The User name is part of the person's Groups.io account, and is in common with all of that person's group subscriptions. That's why it isn't settable from a single group's Subscription page.

To set it select "Account" from the menu that drops down from your name, on the right of the blue logo bar at the top of all pages. Select the "Identity" page, then edit your Account Profile (the topmost section). The User Name entry field is preceded by an "@" sign to signify that setting it creates a link to your group profile. For example:
/g/GroupManagersForum/profile/@Shal

The Display name is part of each group Subscription, and can be set from the member's group profile. It has a default value taken from the member's account (accessed as above).

Re: Do messages count

Ken,

AFAIK message attachments are the only stored items deleted when the
storage limit is reached.
Correct.

And even that is optional. In the Message Formatting section of the group's Settings page is an "Out of Space" option which allows you to choose between deleting old attachments and rejecting ("bouncing") new messages with attachments.

How To Set User Name?

Mark Bielecki

I've been away from groups.io and just returned with a new group.

My apologies if this question has already been answered, I did do some searching but couldn't find an answer.

When I joined groups.io back when it started I was given an option to choose a User Name.

A new member to my new group wishes to have a User Name, but on his Subscription/Group Profile tab it reads "User Name Not Set" and there is no obvious place to set a User Name.

It's probably staring us in the face, but I've looked all over the place, he's looked all over the place, neither of us can find the location to set his User Name.??

Can somebody point out where to go to add or change a User Name in a member's group profile?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Mark Bielecki

A reply that will likely be useful to others. I volunteer to transfer to the wiki.

Re: Question about Member Notices - Note to Member

I think you should set it up as a generic message. When sending it via the member page, you can edit or add to it, if needed.

The only notice that I'm aware of that can be scheduled for monthly delivery is the Guidelines type.

Re: Set to no emails from members in Yahoo Groups?

Tiffany,
I moved my list from YahooGroups this week. After I determined that the transfer
was successful, I set the entire group default to moderated postings.
Only 5 (out of 1600) members have tried to post after I sent a special notice
that all posting would continue only on groups.io
By moderating posting of messages, files and photos the Yahoogroup will be static.
3 times instead of approving a moderated request to post, I replied directly
to the YG member that the group had moved. I also checked to make sure that
their membership had transferred. After the first day the only activity on the old YG
list has been members unsubscribing.
