Re: Is there a way to send an Inquiry type email before accepting new members in Groups.io?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

There is a setting you can try at Amin/settings/, and at the top of the page there is a setting for Member Notices. Check that out. I set up a Pending Subscriptions, but I¡¯m not sure how it¡¯s working. If I don¡¯t the who the person is that trying to join, then I send them an email also. That was normal operating procedure at Y, so I¡¯m trying to do it at Groups.io

I am just emailing each new member before they are approved, asking for a single sentence about why they want to join. It is slow, they don't tend to respond in a hurry.

I was able to do this in Yahoogroups.? It was nice to vet someone before we accepted them.? I tried searching and couldn't find anything..? Thanks!

Sorry for lack of quote, haven¡¯t seen how to do that yet in groups.io (I¡¯m sure it¡¯s there though).

So Shal,

?

I am mid-way in transit to groups.io from the yahoogroup SUFFOLK_VA_FREECYCLE to SUFFOLK-VA-FREECYCLE at groups.io.??? I haven¡¯t seen any autotransfers yet but it¡¯s only been a day and yahoo may be slow just now.?

?

I am confused on what the members expect to see.? It seems to have changed from some of the earlier messages I have seen. Is there a wiki I am missing?

If you are a group owner or perspective owner, you can set up your group as a restricted group and therefore be able to contact the prospective applicant before them being approved to your group.

Re: What action is required by members after the transfer?

Thanks Shal.

Yes, I know what the process is (although I haven't needed to use it since the
time limit was introduced) and that workaround is pretty obvious to someone who
is reasonably clued up. I vaguely remember the timescale being discussed some
time ago on beta. Does the green banner you refer to mention the short time
scale? If not perhaps I should raise that on beta? It seems essential for some
people.

It takes more than following the link in the email.

One then must click on the button that says "Email me a link to login".
After you click that button the web site puts up a green banner that
says "An email has been sent to you with a link to log into your
account". If you click that button and then don't bother to check your
email within several minutes I'd say that's on you.

Besides, apart from wasting some of your time the consequence is
harmless. Learn from your mistake and click the button at a time when
you are prepared to check your email.

Is there any way to RSVP without logging in? #calendar

I anticipate that many of the people on my list will probably never need to log in to the groups.io site, and many are also technically challenged.? That said, the RSVP feature could be useful since our group holds events frequently, so I've been trying it out with a couple folks that were direct added to my group.? (In time everyone will be direct added).

When they try to RSVP, it asks for a login/password which they don't have.? The only options I see for them to continue at that point are to:
1) Do 'forgot password' and set up an account
2) Direct them to get a temporary link for sign-in.?

Unfortunately this pretty much ends the process for most of our users.? Is there a better option that I've missed?

Thanks,
Christine

Is it possible to somehow keep the original uploaders name as the person that uploaded the file? Tried it with one and it put my ID as Uploaded By.

Re: Great transition

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

We had issues on our enterprise account with bouncing members.? Mark can speak more to what happened there (it was a server issue, not a groups.io issue) so we had to move our server and it¡¯s basically solved the problem.?

?

If anyone has a message they send out to their members about ¡°whitelisting¡± email addresses that might be something you can post regularly to keep those bouncing members at bay.

Good luck!

Malware Threat in attached photos.

Last year I suffered a ransomware attack thru an attached photo in an e-mail.
Are photos (uploaded and attached) scanned for malware in groups.io?
A search in this group had zero results.

Data protection

I am considering moving the group I manage on YahooGroups to another software base. This potentially would mean releasing names and email addresses to a third party. It thus falls under the remit of the UK Data Protection Act 1984? and then the even more stringent forthcoming EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) from May 2018. In the latter, implied consent (with an opt out for such an action) may not be legal.

How have other list managers dealt with this issue?

Limits on Photo size but not photo type!

All,
I set the size limit in e-mails to a smaller 488x488 maximum,
while images in Photos are limited to a larger 1024 x 1024.

However I don't see a means of limiting photo type.
A Jpeg 488 x 488 image is much smaller than a 488x488 Bitmap.

Is there any way to restrict wasteful image types like Bitmap?
Other than encouraging use of Jpegs?

Re: Great transition

Marv,

10% are bouncing. That is more troubling.
Not necessarily. Y!Groups bounce tracking has had problems for several years, and these may be addresses which should have been listed as Bouncing at Y!Groups, but for one reason or another weren't.

I posted on the Y! group that members should be receiving posts from
groups.io and to adjust their anti-spam if they are not.
And particularly if their email service uses a "challenge" type of anti-spam they may need to explicitly white-list groups.io.

Re: Identifying inactive members

Marv,

I suppose I am asking if groups.io can track reads on posts.
I think it has been suggested, but no.

And of course, any attempt to track whether email messages are opened would be problematic.

Database Search

I have many databases in our group, and I'v noticed something peculiar when I do a search on one of them. Six dbases have some information found in all of them, and when I do a search for a particular item in one dbase, the results of the search will also display that particular information in the other dbases, along with what I'm looking for. It's like these dbases are connected, so a search in one is a search in all of them. This does not seem like a normal operation to me. Is it?

Re: Are Adult groups allowed on groups.io

Johnny,

Hi, I wanted to transfer my adults only yahoo group to groups.io, but
I cannot find any info that adult groups are allowed on here.
It depends on the group's content:
/static/adult
(That link is in the TOS)

... if so how do I make my group available to adults only.
As Duane said, there is no mechanism to do that.

If you decide that your group fits within the content guidelines you might want to make the group's content members-only and restrict membership to people you approve.
