Re: I have a dilemma with a group that I help manage and I'm looking for some advice

Joseph,

Which means I have to help her re-create the group. Which I think if I
remember correctly, we have to wait a whole year before we can use the
same name again.
As far as I know there is no defined time that the name of a deleted group is reserved, it is indefinite (forever). Unless you can talk Groups.io to intervene on your behalf.

And which I don't really want to do due to the new guidelines that
start on for January 18.
You can start the group with a different name now, and rename it later (after you've convinced Groups.io to release the name).

And since none of us are nonprofits, I don't qualify for any of the
discounts.
The only discount is for Enterprise plan groups, and I doubt you'd be looking for that plan.

The group may have only had one maybe 20 members, but we were hoping
that eventually it would've grown. So does anybody have any advice as to what I should do?
Create the replacement group now, and upgrade it to Premium before January 18th if you believe you'll want the extra features. If you can't sustain the fees for premium you may eventually have to drop back down to Basic, but given the upcoming pricing change you may want to lock in now if you anticipate growing beyond 400 members.

I have a dilemma with a group that I help manage and I'm looking for some advice

First of all, merry Christmas to everyone. Well today I was presented with a surprise Christmas present. It was a text message from an owner who was a cocreator to a group here on Groups..Io end it was her idea. However, the gentleman that created the group, took somebody else's advice, and decided that the group was a joke it was no longer necessary. So he deleted it without speaking with the co-owner. Which it was her idea and his idea we found out that the group no longer existed because she could no longer pull it up in her groups list. And we both felt like that the sole owner should've spoke to one of us first before he just decided to drop it off the face of the earth. Whenever I approached him about this whole situation what he told me above is what he sent me in a text message. And this is not the first time that something like this is happened. Sometime early last year, something happened to him and he randomly decided to change my role in one of his groups without speaking to me first and mind you I did nothing absolutely nothing wrong. He just randomly changed my role. And I didn't think it was right he gave me my membership back as the sole co-owner of his group. Mind you, he was also juggling college at the time. So that was resolved now I've run into this issue. Which means I have to help her re-create the group. Which I think if I remember correctly, we have to wait a whole year before we can use the same name again. And which I don't really want to do due to the new guidelines that start on for January 18. And since none of us are nonprofits, I don't qualify for any of the discounts. The group may have only had one maybe 20 members, but we were hoping that eventually it would've grown. So does anybody have any advice as to what I should do? I have approached him and asked him, what would he feel like if I up and did something right to his group. And before anybody asks, yes it's very poor communication.

I agree that a restricted group is best for a family group. And for a committee or other similar organizations.

Re: Making the members list visible/invisible.

Dave,

Under the spam settings, the box for ¡°Restricted Membership¡± is not
checked.
Then that is why you don't have the option to show your group's Members list to members. The concern is that any spammer could freely join your group and download all the member addresses.

For a family group I would strongly recommend Restricted membership. That way family members can be assured that strangers can't join the group and read the messages (unless you mistakenly let one in, but you don't have to tell your family members that).

I recommend Restricted membership for most any group where only people you know should be allowed to read the group's content. That can include clubs, classmates, and certainly family groups.

Re: Should a sender receive their own post in their email?

char,

i followed the directions and it didn't work,, my group is our
little group ,, i get all the group mail except mine,,,
I'm not sure what directions you followed, but if it was about the Account Preferences option "I always want copies of my own emails" that is only effective for Gmail addresses, or addresses powered by Google's services.

As I replied to Herb, messages from yourself are likely being diverted or rejected by your email service.

You can check for rejections on the Recent Bounces page of your account:
/account?page=bounces

If your messages are not listed there then check your email service's web interface for the Spam folder, Junk folder, or whatever they call it. Perhaps its settings can be adjusted, or perhaps you can set up a filter to ensure that your messages are delivered to your Inbox.

?

I think you should decide on whether or not you want or need restricted membership for your group.?

This group (GMF) is not restricted.?
The summary on the home page says:

Posts to this group require approval from the moderators. ? IE - messages are moderated
Subscriptions to this group do not require approval from the moderators. IE - the group is not restricted.

If you think that you prefer control over who joins your group, you can make it restricted.
You can create a notice that is automatically?sent to would-be members?asking for some info, if you wish.
If the group is restricted, you need not moderate messages.

Or you can continue to allow anyone to join the group without requiring permission from you, and simply moderate all messages.

See?/helpcenter/gettingstarted/1/step-4-customize-the-group-s-settings/group-settings
for more details.

If you prefer to keep things as they are, you can request your members to update their profile so that members can see the Directory.

Also, I don't know your setting for Replies.
There are two relevant options -?

- Reply To Group and Sender (or Group), and a couple more choices.?
If you choose Group and Sender, it is easy for members to reply directly to another member who has posted - through the group site by choosing Private in a post, or from footers in the emails.

- Remove Other Reply Options
Removes links on the website and digest to reply options other than your selected Reply To option.

The Help says:
Reply To: This setting controls who is initially set to receive replies to messages that are posted to the group. Select the option you want to apply. Be aware that members will still see additional reply options in messages on the group¡¯s website and in email digests (if they are using that delivery option) unless you use the Remove Other Reply Options setting to remove those additional reply options.
Remove Other Reply Options: When you select this checkbox, links to reply options other than the one you selected in the Reply To list above are removed from messages on the group¡¯s website and from email digests.
?
?If this is a newer group, you might want to review the options here:

If it's something like #test! it won't be recognized as a hashtag since they can't contain the ! character, so no bounce, no removal, and no creation.? It would have to be #test ! for it to work as you seem to expect.? I seem to remember all of that being covered in the manuals.

Hashtag bug #hashtags

Before I report this on the beta group let me know if it makes sense, or if you have any insight.
?
If a subject line includes a string preceded by the # symbol, and ending with a punctuation mark, the string will not be recognized as a hashtag.?
?
If the group's hashtag permission is set to "Messages from members can only be tagged with existing hashtags, new hashtags will be removed," the message will not be bounced, and the string will still not be recognized as a hashtag.
?
(Yes, "bounced" is used incorrectly here; I'm just using the same terminology that is used on the settings page.)
