Re: Groups.io website problem

Let's go back to basics here. It seems that Kyle may not be familiar with web links.

Kyle, every link has two parts:
  • The real link which begins with http:// or https://. This part has to be exactly right. It's the path your request takes to find the server page you need.
  • The display text, which is what is visible on the page.
Sometimes the real link and display text are the same. For example, "Go to ?that actually links to https://www.google.com.
Sometimes they are not. For example, "" that links to?.

You can see the display text on your screen. Shal has given you an overly complex means of seeing the underlying link text. Here is a simpler means. Hover your mouse over the display text and look at the small print in the lower left corner of your browser window. In your situation they should be identical.

Let me know if this makes more sense.

Re: Polls

When you create a poll, it gets sent to members. Click on Post Poll after you create it.
You can see it in your messages and search for old ones by clicking on Topics in Messages to select Polls.

For more info about polls, see

Also in the owners help: ?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-settings-for-premium-and-enterprise-features/polls?single=true

Re: Groups.io website problem

I encountered this issue too!? It happened because I changed the name of the group.? There is a Welcome Message sent out to new members and in that message is a link to the group... but .... when I changed the name of the group, the link did not change!? I believe this is a bug, but I was able to edit the Welcome Message and correct it.?

To check your Welcome Message, go to Settings > Member Notices > Welcome Message
Then click on the link that is in that message and see if it goes to the right place.
If not, don't just correct the spelling.? That makes it appear to be correct, but the underlying url has not been corrected.
Delete that url, and then copy and paste the url of the homepage of your group into that space.
Then go down to the bottom and click on "Update Notice"

That fixed the issue I was having.

New option to move a Yahoo group to: forums.group

I received an email this morning about a forums based platform called
forums.group:

I plan to stay with groups.io but this is another option and has more
plans than GIO does. I thought I'd mention it in case some people are
waiting until almost the very end, which is in a few days.

I haven't checked out their service but I think their marketing plan
started way too late since most have already moved their Yahoo groups
to a different platform already.

I did note that the free plans don't allow posts by email, so that
will kill the idea for most people. I don't know if this is a
recurring fee, but their premium level allows email hosting and other
useful features and they price it at $90. I haven't dug any deeper
than one level into their website to find out if it's $90 annually or
a one time fee.

They have other services that you use up-front, and one of them claims
to bring the message archive back:

Plan 3: Archive Forum With Messages, Files, Photos
If you have an inactive Yahoo Group and simply want to make the
existing archives available online without restarting discussions,
this is ideal. The messages, files and photos are made available with
full search functions available as well as the similar topics function
that cross-references each post. This level is typical ordered for
INACTIVE groups that just want to make their archives available online
for reference purposes. The forum contains all the messages and
members that have posted in the past, but silent members have been
omitted. We will not be sending login details to the members, yet they
can use the lost password feature to reset their password. As this
type of forum is designed for archiving, we will leave it online for
at least 10 years even without further activity.

I would bet that this would only be for those groups that allowed a
web group to archive all posts (some group was doing that just before
Yahoo closed message storage).

I'll let someone else with more time to look into this further. I've
been working some 50-60 hour work weeks so time is harder to find
right now than it was months ago. (We're doing more with less, as they
say.)

I would check if the LINK that you sent them is the same as the text of the link.

I made this mistaken recently when copy/pasting information from one IO group to the pages of another IO group: I edited the text of URLs, but the underlying hyperlink remained the same.

For example, if you typed "/g/Endicott-Gen" in the Endicott-Gen group, and pressed space after it, Groups.io converts it into a hyperlink for "/g/Endicott-Gen". But if you then copy that group's text to another group and you only edit the "Endicott-Gen" part of the visible text to "Howard-Gen", the underlying hyperlink still points to "/g/Endicott-Gen". When you edit the text of a hyperlink, you must remove the hyperlink (click the link and select the icon that disconnects the hyperlink) and then reconnect it (e.g. by moving to the end of it and pressing space).

Re: Groups.io website problem

Clicking your Howard Gen link took me to [email protected]

Clicking your Endicott gen link took me to Endicott Family Genealogy Forum [email protected]

Are you sure you are sending the right link ?

Or are they clicking the right link ?

Re: Groups.io website problem

Kyle,

They clicked on the following hyperlink I provided them:
/g/Howard-Gen
and the groups.io website sends them to one of my other forums:
/g/Endicott-Gen
Typed out in plain text as they were in your message, they each seem to go to the respective group.

I have been messaging members of the Yahoogroups.com forums that they
need to migrate to the new forums at groups.io.
Perhaps when creating your messages to the Yahoo Groups you created the message as formatted text, rather than plain text. In which case it would be possible for you to have accidentally given the same address for both links, even though the display text of the links were different.

That's just a guess of course, but it could be verified or falsified by examination of the View Source (or Show Original) of one of those messages as received back from your groups. Or maybe even in the sent copy. In Thunderbird that's Ctrl+U (or View | Message Source).

As Duane wrote, it's a four-year old message. It might be worth doing the suggested test ( click the "Show Original" link and then click the "Show only message" button)?to see if the bug still exists at Google before giving up.

Moving group archives from a group on Google groups

Hello everyone, does anybody know how to move group archives from a group on Google groups to groups.io?

Re: Problems adding members/shutting down/restarting

Hi Duane,

Thank you for this information!

Given that there are now already 79 members of the group and that I have sent out the 700+ invitations, deleting the group now doesn't seem to be the most logical step to take.

So I DID contact the support people you suggested and asked them to cancel my delete request.

However, you may be correct that I failed to confirm the deletion. I don't remember.
