Re: member unsubscribe

Stephanie,

So to test the below, I signed up my daughter from her device (she has
never logged in) and when tried the unsubscribe link from her
email/device she also got the same request to login.
Since that seems to directly contradict how the system is said to work, you should report that in beta. Probably best as a new topic with the #bug hashtag:

In your message I think you should cite this answer:

Before convert my entire yahoo group over any chance this is a setting
I can fix?
Nope. It isn't supposed to be that way,

I don't know if you need the screenshot, but you could include it for emphasis. Maybe there's something about the fact this is being handled on a mobile device. But your test wasn't was it?

No...if you need a copy of your own message, you must BCC yourself.

Any replies coming back will appear in both the log and in that member's "+Owner Messages" page.

Wild guess: because weird stuff happens when you have two accounts on the same computer.

I recently had this with gmail: signed in to one account and clicked on a link, then saw that gmail had me logged in as one of my other gmail-accounts

I'm told the following will work.

  1. Open the file in Excel.
  2. Select the column containing the email addresses.
  3. Hit ctrl-C to copy this list of addresses to your clipboard.
  4. Return to the groups.io page (Invite or Direct Add, as appropriate)
  5. Click with your mouse in the box labeled "Email Addresses" to place a text cursor there
  6. Hit ctrl-V to paste the contents of your clipboard into the box
  7. Click the "Add Members" button

Re: How to make edits without emailing everyone in the group #messages

I am awful with typos, Chuck. So I do an Edit or two BUT this is not sent out. I do it to clean up archives - and admonish myself to do better.

If a member did as you say I'd moderate him and explain, mostly offlist.

I HATE when, because of this problem, some owners simply shut down edits.

Chuck -- Yeah, that can be a problem, if the edits are trivial...but if the edits are substantive, it's a good thing.

? So I was wondering 3 things:

1) If those whose notification is set for a daily summary rather than Individual Messages, would they also get all those emails?
A Daily Summary does not contain any messages, only a list of active topics.

If the edit[s] is completed before a Digest is due, only the final version is included in the digest. Keep in mind that when a Digest is "due" varies from member to member, depending on what topics they have muted, etc.

2) If the original poster deleted then reposted the message rather than editing it, would the original message still go out to all, including those set for Summary?
See above.?In addition, if the original post has triggered the sending of a Digest, both will go out, in separate digests.?

3) Is there some legal requirement for this? It seems like we're not allowing them to put lipstick on the pig but we're allowing them to kill it-;)
The original message has already gone out to everyone on Individual Emails. Thus, the only way to effectively avoid the dupes is to never send out ANY edited versions.?I don't like giving regular members the ability to change history, and on that basis if a groupwide option was available to somehow suppress the sending of edits, I would not take advantage of it.

I don't know about the legal aspects, but I do think it's appropriate that groups.io maintains an audit trail (click the Edited link at upper right). In an extreme case, someone could post something obnoxious to the group, edit the post, and subsequently claim they didn't.

The online message archive is, more than anything, a record of emails that have previously been sent.?It's easy to lose sight of this if you read all group messages online.?

There's no way to send the contents of a file.? You could create a Monthly Reminder Notice to be sent and include the correct formatting in it.? You can also send a link to a file.

There is no such function on GIO.? It's been suggested before (on the beta group), but I'm not going to wait for it to show up.? I can create such a file in Notepad and upload it easily enough.

Not directly.? There can be NO formatting or extraneous characters included in the information used for invites (or Direct Adds).? See /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/inviting-people-to-join-a-group/sending-invitations-to-join-the-group

Others may reply differently, but our travel group had a large links library in YG. When we moved, I moved the links to the wiki.
You can see GMF's wiki - albeit used for a different function. But you can extrapolate.

However, I seem to recall that early on there was substantial discussion of, and confusion about, what to do when the link takes you to a browser which /is/ logged in, but to a different address.
That seems to continue to be a source of confusion.

Both obvious options seemed like they would lead to more confusion: (a) display an error describing why the unsubscribe can't be done right now, or (b) log out the different address and then perform the unsubscribe. I don't recall whether one of those or some other approach was settled on.
This screenshot shows what actually happens (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wzrUeNMwY561yq95ojcoFnGQpGKKafUx/view?usp=sharing). I still think an mailto link to the +unsubscribe address may be more straightforward.

This was in the wake of the third option, which of course was unacceptable: (c) unsubscribe whatever address happened to be logged in. This had happened during testing of a simpler version of the unsubscribe link.
