When there are pending members, the default view for that page is Pending.? You have to use the drop down to select Members to get to the regular page.

Possible bug in membership approval

There are 30 members in our group and a new person applied for subscription. Usually it shows up in the pending list under admin for approval. Today it shows that email address under admin->members rather than admin->pending. Under pending nothing is listed. Also under members it shows the number 1 instead of 30. I wonder whether anyone else has encountered this.

No, that's a user choice.? As an additional note, once the quote is there, you can delete parts of it that aren't needed.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Using-the-Search-Engine

Thus, I can't find messages by searching for "thissubscriber @ hisdomain.com"?-- is there a way around this?? Or any other way of locating posts made by former members?
If you know his posterid, or can find one of his messages, yes. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/68835192#26422?for details.

Premium groups also have access to Past members via the Member List and you can look up his activity history (including messages posted) that way.

Searching for Posts by Member Name or Email Address

I can easily find all posts by current members of my group. For members who have changed their email addresses, or are no longer members, I would like to be able to find all messages that they posted. Search does not search the first line in messages that shows the member's name and email address, e.g., Curtis A. Conley <thissubscriber @ hisdomain.com>

Thus, I can't find messages by searching for "thissubscriber @ hisdomain.com"?-- is there a way around this?? Or any other way of locating posts made by former members?

[Email address genericized by Moderator.]?

in past discussion it has been stated that 'that's just how it is'.
It's also how it used to be with Yahoogroups and how it still is with Google Groups for all of the groups that I'm a member of. It's just simpler to refer to a group by it's mail address than by its web address.
[email protected] is simpler than GROUPNAME.groups.io ???

Really, you're saying an "@" is simpler than a "." ???

GROUPNAME.groups.io works and is more intuitive and memorable.

Converting PDF to RTF (was: Uploading files to Groups.io)

2 ways I know of
?
1.
This works on windows computers as a standalone software in the opensource freeware realm.? It works alright on Win8.1.
?
2. convert your files online via ZAMZAR
Upload and then get the converted file.?
CAUTION.? Anything copyrighted or private should NOT go thru any service like this.? Unknown if online convertors retain those files in a offline storage area for their own use.

Re: OT, Advertising my GIO(s) #askmembers

Anna,

I was able to successfully improve the search engine hits to my groups place here.
The main page under the description is one of the keys to help bring search engine finders to the group.

Looking at our main page here, you will notice a few things.

- The first 5 words are keywords that the crawlers on the main web page looks for in the description field.? Thus,Yanmar Tractor Owners Group are set by the crawlers as the page TAGS.
- The number of times you use a key word is critical.? Thus, our word is Yanmar.? BUT, it can not be a repeated word and used one in a sentence.? The crawlers logic has to see the description as a field of balanced information.
- Lastly, it will use the last sentence as combinational occurrence words.? Not quite like a TAG, but in combination with a TAG. So, if someone did a search engine lookup for Yanmar YM3000, my GroupsIO page will be ranked on the first or second page vs. a dozen pages down a long listing of finds.
?

I had used a digital forensics tool that simulates web page crawlers and how they compile search engine data. The before and after effects are very impressive.?? Search engines like Google, DuckDuckGo, StartPage, DogPile, etc, the GroupsIO page ranks within the top 5 listings now for finding the group. :)?? In one weeks time after the alignment to find the group, membership jumped by 30 people joining.

Under the ADMIN tab, you can click on the ACTIVITY tab.? This will help you understand who joins via the web site and who joins via email.? For our group right now, it's 50/50.? So, the search engine rankings have helped.
?
Hope this helps you and other groups here.? The tool really isn't needed after knowing what information the tool described as being essential for the crawlers to find you.

BMaverick

3. Is there a way to set up a similar file but that is keywords and for reference only? *
*. On a similar note, I would want to set up reference files for our members with our posting guidelines, rejection explanations, etc.
You have lots of options for this.? You can create a file with the information in it, then send a link to those that need it.? You can put this information in your Group Guidelines which can be set to be sent out monthly.? You can Monthly Reminder notice to be sent out.

Besides the group notices, one can also use the FILES and/or WIKI sections where they can upload or create documents of this nature.

Cheers,
Christos

Copies of messages sent to subscribers via members page

I found it necessary to send a message to a subscriber via the members list

I bcc'd a copy to myself, so I have that copy

But is there a copy saved in the group somewhere?

IMHO that is a truly ghastly idea given the number of posts that some threads can accumulate. Do you really want a new reply to a topic to be accompanied by perhaps 20, 30 or more previous posts? You might but I doubt if your members will thank you for it. Over - quoting is a more or less permanent problem with some users of some groups and forcing over - quoting does not look like a good idea.

Currently, if a reply is posted via the web, there is no included context in the reply email.
That is down to members not taking the tiny amount of trouble necessary to use a sensible quote from which to work. It is not a function of posting via the web UI; users should be nudged into providing quotations on which to hang their replies.

Chris

No, it's up to each person to decide what, if anything, to include in their reply.? You can highlight what you want to quote before clicking the reply button (as with many email programs) or once in the reply box, use the speech bubble at the upper left to "Quote Whole Post".?
