No.

For that, you have YGOG (Yahoo Group Of Groups),

Happy New Year and Thanks

Dear Owners and Moderators of GMF,

?

I want to thank you for the enormous job you did, especially in the past few months managing the issues, questions and needs of so many newcomers to groups.io!

It seems to have been a ¡°rock around the clock¡± challenge to all of you, and I really admire your remaining calm and composed in spite of the fact that questions just answered were repeated again and again and new ones seemed to burst upon you by the minute.

?

It must be mentioned that your work here doubtlessly eased to a large extent the task that Mark had to perform in these ¡°rough¡± times and that it was (and is) a valuable accompaniment to his extraordinary performance. I hope you can get some recreation and stay healthy!

?

I wish all of you a happy and peaceful NEW YEAR 2020!

Re: Restoring a Deleted Group

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This was a Yahoo Group, when I pushed delete it asked if I was sure. When I pushed delete again, it told me that I had 15 days to restore the group before it was gone. Is this not the right group for questions about the old Yahoo Groups?

?

This whole group debacle was a disaster. I had almost 52,000 members on my list and then was given, by Yahoo, roughly 2 months¡¯ notice that they were changing the way the Groups worked. I scrambled to get my people added to the Google Groups, but could add only 100 a day, with no way to do a bulk import.

?

Then after December 14th, all of a sudden the email groups that I seriously depended on stopped offering images and the links didn¡¯t work.

?

Yesterday morning, in an email telling my subscribers that they needed to sign up for the Google Groups if they wanted to keep getting our emails, Yahoo started bouncing all of the messages all over the place. For example, if one person replied and told me they wanted to unsubscribe all of a sudden everyone got that message, not just me, which intensified causing lots more people to want to unsubscribe, which tossed even more messages to everyone on the list. It was if everyone did a ¡°reply all¡±.

?

The only way to stop this was to shut the list down, which brings me to my current dilemma. I was told in the ¡°delete groups¡± page that I had 15 days to restore any groups that I deleted but I now can¡¯t find where to do that.

?

There is only one that I want to restore, but my groups aren¡¯t even listed on the ¡°My Groups¡± page anymore.

?

Any help is appreciated, all I need to do is to restore 1 of the groups.

?

This only applies to a Yahoo group, and maybe not even then.

The delete dialog in groups.io clearly states that the action cannot be undone.

Yes, if you go to the Identity tab of your account settings:
/account?page=viewprofile
and you click on any of the "Edit" buttons, you'll see a notice that says:
"Note: When you send a message, your email address is also shown to group members who receive messages via email."

Re: Save a picture from PHOTOS

Ken,

But once the image is copied n pasted, does it matter the original
source?
It has been a while since I tested it, but if you used drag-n-drop (which many people think is the same as copy/paste) then in the case of an image in a web browser it was the URL that was copied, not the image data itself. If you used a "Copy Image" function in the browser then I believe you would get the content, same as a copy from your device.

I also copied/pasted onto a wiki page (from an emailed image and from
an older CIO post, and ultimately images disappeared.
I had that problem when pasting into a wiki page from the Screenshot function in older versions of Firefox - back when one of the options was to upload and edit the image. It turns out that copying after editing put the image's (URL) on the clipboard, to be pasted into the wiki page. That looked fine in the editor, and even immediately after saving the image, but would disappear later when Mozilla discarded the edited image. I spotted one of those in GMF's wiki a while ago and I've been meaning to replace it.

Firefox's current Screenshot function puts the image data on the clipboard when you copy it, as does Win10's Snipping tool or Snip & Sketch, so those work fine.

The image might be copied/pasted either from a local file (say the image displayed in a graphics application) or copied/pasted from an online image (say, displayed in a browser.)

But once the image is copied n pasted, does it matter the original source?? Note that I am not talking about using the insert image dialog (a local file).? ?Some (many?) forum platforms (like SMF - simple machines) have an insert image function using the image URL, which, I think, is sorely lacking in GIO.

I the examples I note, the image DOES exist in the web GIO, but come thru as a broken image in the emailed posts.? That tells me it's a GIO issue when turning around the message. Unfortunately, I? haven't kept?track enough to come up with a repeatable bug.

I also copied/pasted onto a wiki page (from an emailed image and from an older CIO post, and ultimately images disappeared.? Note the several broken images here for example:

I just try -- and tell others on the group --? to avoid copy/pasting altogether (unfortunately.)

When posting via web I believe there are two possible results: an image
file carried in the message (a "local" or attached image file) or an
image file hosted some web site (a "remote" image). The former occurs
when the image was copied from your computer or device, the latter
occurs when the image was copied from web site. Many Email interfaces

When posting via email there are lots of variations in the way an email
interface may choose to represent an embedded image. The actual image

That said, I'm not sure if these variations account for your experience
of haphazard results.

> Possibly the image format (eg, jpg v. png?).

I don't think that would be it, at least not those two examples (I've
used PNG a lot and others use JPG a lot). But there are a lot if image
file formats out there, and it is entirely possible that one's email
interface or web browser might not support some of the less often used
types.

If your group is set to resize images sent by email then it is also
possible for Groups.io's resizing software to misinterpret the image
file content. If you don't resize I think Groups.io simply passes it
through (to individual emails and to your browser when viewing via the
Messages section).

If you can nail down a repeatable example that might be worth reporting
to support.

Re: Joining the subgroup directly still not possible?

June,

I don't want members of the main group to get any subgroup messages
unless they are also subscribed to that subgroup. Is that the way
things work by default ...
Yes.

As Frances said you've got controls (in each subgroup's Settings page) to control whether primary group members can see that the subgroup exists, and whether they can read it's messages. But only subgroup members will receive its messages by email.

Do I have to tell people they need to subscribe to the main group
before they can join a subgroup?
That would be the safest approach, at least until the investigations in this topic are resolved and maybe bug-fixes or improvements implemented.

They must be primary group members in order to be in a subgroup, there's no question about that.

But, depending on how they join the subgroup, subscription to the primary group might happen automatically. I believe it works that way with Invite; I thought it worked that way with both Join and +subscribe, but this topic exists because some have found that it doesn't work that way. I haven't tested this myself in quite some time.

Members of subgroups must be members of the main group.

You can direct add main group members to subgroups. Or invite them to the subgroup (they will be added to the main group too, if they accept the subgroup invitation.)

What you want is the default, but do check the settings for your subgroup.
You can decide on settings for the subgroup, i.e. be different than the main group.
Do consider whether you want the subgroups to be visible to the main group.?
See?
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups
and
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup

Members of the subgroup can make different subscription choices for each. For example, just get a full text digest for the mail group (or special notices only). And get every post right away for the subgroup.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation
for settings and choices.

Re: Joining the subgroup directly still not possible?

I don't know as to whether it is what is supposed to happen, but it is certainly not what I expect to happen.

Having done a bit of playing around (aka testing) in this area, as I wish to have a largely inactive main group (but to which membership must be approved), with an active sub group (or several of them), without necessarily sub-group membership needing specific approval (i.e. beyond main group membership), I found that there are several things that don't happen as I expect - in particular members mysteriously appearing on (or disappearing from) the list of members, without associated e-mails or activity log entries.?

Having confirmed Samuel's experience, I found a second subscription request to the sub-group did enrol me to the sub-group, as expected.

Let me set out my expectations:

For joining (or leaving) a main group (only), or a sub-group (when already a main group member), however triggered - as normal, with appropriate sequence of e-mails, approvals and activity log entries.

For joining a sub-group, when not a member of the main group:
  • on application (by e-mail or web), confirmation e-mail should say that joining sub-group means also joining the main group; on confirming, the main group joining process be gone through first (with appropriate e-mails, approval, and activity logs); then the sub-group process (likewise). If two approvals are needed, perhaps both should be done first, before any other part of part of the joining processes.
  • on invitation, if the inviter is not a main group moderator with appropriate permission, then first that approval (to invite to main group) be obtained, then invitation e-mail should state to both main and sub-group, and on accepting the joining processes for both, as above.
  • on direct add, likewise.
On leaving a main group, when also a member of sub-group(s) - confirmation e-mail should state '...and any sub-groups that you a member of', or list them; and then leaving e-mails and activity logs for the sub-group as well as the main group (currently is main group only).

So that all concerned ((putative) subscriber and moderators/owners) are aware/have a record of what has happened, for both main and sub-group.

Ken,

A note that pasting an image into both/either an emailed or web post
(¡®er message) is haphazard at best.
When posting via web I believe there are two possible results: an image file carried in the message (a "local" or attached image file) or an image file hosted some web site (a "remote" image). Many Email interfaces block "remote" images by default because they can be used (by the site) to detect that the message was displayed.

It occurred to me that you could also have subgroups and invite (direct add) only a subset of your members. You can even set a subgroup so it doesn't show in your parent group (ie, in the menu on the left side of the screen).

First, you are "no mail" so you'll have to revisit this group for any answers.

Second, if you haven't, you should disable Directory for the group members. "Member directory is disabled."
In Privacy,?Hide Email Addresses In Archives - choose mask.
In Message Policies, have the settings as reply to group. Below that, click to disable other replies if you don't want someone to reply to group members directly.
And as you mentioned, in Account (top right corner) they can change their display name.

It may be that you can't guarantee privacy. However if your group's archive is private (just group members only) you can't change it back to be public. That might give the group members some confidence.

Also if you are accepting new members, you can create a pending subscription notice to ask for some info about them.
