Simple enough on the old group you can turn off the ability for persons to post messages, and one can change the groups page to inform users that the group has move and the appropriate links.

chicopaddleheads, You can delete the subgroup(s). There's a red Delete button at the bottom of the subgroup's Settings page. However, the change to your group's web and email addresses is permanent;

Remove an empty SUBGROUP created by mistake?
Doesn't seem to be a removal function, and creating a first subgroup appears to have altered the root address, apparently changing the submission path. Advice?
