Re: To sub group members automatically get main group posts?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

It somewhat depends on the purpose of the subgroup.

For example, I have a large group on a general topic and several subgroups on particular aspects. This was done because the subgroup transfer costs could not be justified by the smaller membership but the subgroups are worth keeping.

So, while the default is everyone gets all messages to the main group, I encourage subgroup members to set their main group message preference to no email.
Hence subgroup members get only the subgroup messages and the very few Special Notices from the main group.

Thanks Bruce I think your answer to a) actually answers b) as well. If all main group emails go to everybody in sub groups, then the organizing group responsible for the list should have their own sub group for their own internal organizing.

Re: Identifying Sub-Groups

Larry,

Is it possible to determine and identify sub-groups of which you are a
main group member but not a sub-group member?
Yes.

If the group has subgroups there should be a Subgroups button in the left-column navigation list. On that page there are sections for "Subgroups You Belong To" and "Subgroups You Can Join".

However, there may be other subgroups that are not made visible to the parent group members (that's in the subgroup's Settings) and those will not be listed in the You Can Join list.

Re: YGroups shutdown... In progress?

Paul,

BUT... in the queue of the individual messages in that Topics list,
when a message was clicked on it would load but there was no text
displayed other than the subject line.
I've been seeing that a lot in the last couple days. Generally refreshing the page will eventually cause the message body to display, but it may take several. I've had better results with Edge than Firefox, but that could be coincidence (I generally read in email, not on the group's pages).

The only YGroups I've got left now are GMF and one other gardening
group. Left them just to see what will happen when the Y!G
conversion/downsizing gets into full swing.
The plan is to keep GMF on Yahoo going in the new email-only era. I'll use some other facility (possibly YahooGroupedia) to host reference material which I used to cite just by pointing back to prior messages.

But how Yahoo is choosing which groups get converted first is a
mystery.
I don't think the deliberate removal of access is underway yet. I think what we're seeing with message body access is simply a manifestation of Neo's long-standing problem with accessing content in the face of server congestion or problems.

Re: Yahoo group deadline extension #yahoo #transfer

Chris,

2 - messages were also downloaded (file format I could open only with
Notepad ++)
Those are mbox format - Mail Box - a standard for email storage.

Text based, but not particularly human-friendly as it includes the full header and encoding of the raw (View Source / Show Original) email message.

Try opening them with Thunderbird or another email program, or with a more general file reader.

YGroups shutdown... In progress?

Just FWIW . . .

I've just finished unsubscribing from about twenty YGroups and noticed with several of those groups that the truncated messages showed in the TOPICS list on the message archives page. BUT... in the queue of the individual messages in that Topics list, when a message was clicked on it would load but there was no text displayed other than the subject line.

The only YGroups I've got left now are GMF and one other gardening group. Left them just to see what will happen when the Y!G conversion/downsizing gets into full swing. The way it seemed to me today is that it's happening piecemeal, affecting only certain groups. But how Yahoo is choosing which groups get converted first is a mystery.

Before I unsubscribed I sent a message to the group owners of several of my YGroups encouraging them to come setup a free, basic group on GIO. Hope that they'll consider doing so.

Cheers!

Re: "CHANGE: We are no longer accepting new Yahoo Group transfer requests"?

BMaverick,

YG will be going DARK today. Not sure if it's 12-noon or 12-midnight
Eastern Time Zone.
A letter from Yahoo Concierge care says 11:59 PM Pacific time (2019-12-15 07:59 UTC):

Public archive, no membership required (it took me a few refreshes in Edge to get it to display).

They might be prompt. Or the removal of access may "roll-out" over time as most of their prior changes have.

Re: Yahoo group deadline extension #yahoo #transfer

My data request worked and when I downloaded the huge file and took a look, I found some interesting things:

1 - it downloaded data from ALL my Yahoo groups, not just the ones I moderate/own
2 - messages were also downloaded (file format I could open only with Notepad ++)
3 - the only photos downloaded were ones that I uploaded - no idea why all photos weren't downloaded

Re: Yahoo group deadline extension #yahoo #transfer

Stick with it!

I presume Yahoo's servers are getting a lot of these requests. Using PGO yesterday, I was denied access a bunch of times (a probably I didn't have earlier in the week), and then suddenly, I was able to log on and download what I needed without further hassle.

Good luck!

Generally, yes.

Subgroup members are also members of the main group...it is not possible to join the subgroup without joining the main group. So under normal circumstances anything posted to the main group will be be received by everyone. However, such emails can be restricted on an individual basis using normal mail filters (e.g.: "follow only") and subscription options (e.g. "no email").

I don't understand what you mean by this.

I used the yahoogroupedia application (found, as above at PBWorks) for "Chrome" (in fact any Chromium based web browser) with good results.

Ran it in Vivdali web browser. No tool bar Apps button shows, so enter
vivaldi://apps in the address bar for a new page showing them.

Gave me a text file. I opened (imported) it in Libre Office (MS Office would likely work) and created a .csv (MS) and .ods (ODF) spreadsheet files. That allowed me to highlight a single column of addies which I used in the GIO invitations area.

If you use the yahoogroupedia Messages application it too will show up on the page brought up by vivaldi://apps

Cheers, John
