Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Thanks, Shal.? Your reasoning for transferring the member list makes sense.? But it brings to mind another question.?
Does the transfer process utilize the member's email address designated to receive Yahoo group messages, or the Yahoo login email (or ID/profile) which is required to login to Yahoo?? As you know, they might not be the same.? For instance, I have to login with the old Yahoo ID I created when joining my first group 15 yrs ago.? But I receive my various group messages at either my Windstream or Gmail addresses.? I just ignore the fact that I even have the Yahoo email account that was automatically created.? Some of my members have lost the ability to login to the Yahoo website, because they don't remember their profile password and can't successfully reset it to to a new one.? My continuing difficulty in trying to help them gain access is one of the reasons I'm getting closer to transferring to Groups.io. If the initial Groups.io message is sent to their "preferred" email address as designated on the Yahoo group, there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able to complete the Groups.io login process.? For those few who might not be able to do that, will there be a problem with my issuing a new invitation to join after the group list is transferred?? Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list?? I understand that it would mean they can't edit old postings, but that shouldn't be an issue with our group.? A limited few do all the postings; the majority just read the emailed messages and login occasionally to view new photos. I've found the GMF for Y!groups a great help in managing the changes since Neo, and now the GMF for Groups.io to educate me about such a promising alternative.? I think the time has come to talk to my group about making the change.? Thanks for your help, and that of other members! Dotty |
Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Dotty,
I will want to transfer all the messages, photos, & files. However, IYou can ask (in step 2 of the transfer instructions) for Groups.io to omit things from the transfer, but I wouldn't recommend skipping the member list. The reason is that the member list is usually copied first so that other content (messages, files, photos, etc.) can be properly connected to the contributing member. That preserves the member's ability to delete or edit their content. I'm aware that each member could change their email address afterYou may find that a lot easier to do with Groups.io than it would have been under Yahoo Groups -- with the caveat that the member must still be able to access mail sent to the address they used in your Yahoo Group. Otherwise you may as well invite them anew. 1) Point them to the account page: /account 2) They'll be asked to Log In. Since they don't yet have a password, tell them to click the button that says "Email me a link to log in". 3) Tell them to enter the email address which they had in your Yahoo Group (their "old" address"). 4) When they receive that message, click through the link it provides and they will now be logged in to Groups.io. The login will last 30 days, or until they delete their browser cookies, or log out. 5) In their account page (the link above) they can change their Email address and/or set a Password. Note that a password is not necessary - they could instead use the "Email me a link to log in" button each time they need to log in. That's very handy on mobile devices, where typing or copy/pasting passwords is usually awkward. And it is slightly more secure: there's no password that a hacker might steal or guess. The same steps apply to members who don't want to change their email address, but just want to log in for the first time. Shal |
Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
I am considering transferring the small Yahoo group I own to Groups.io.? I will want to transfer all the messages, photos, & files.? However, I do not necessarily want to transfer the Yahoo member list as it now exists.? I would like to use this opportunity to "clean up" the member list.? It is a relatively small group of 40+ members, many of which are not particularly computer proficient.? If I could avoid the member transfer, then I could issue invitations to the new Groups.io group using the preferred email address of each member (rather than the email currently being used in the Yahoo group, which may not be one they often check.)
I'm aware that each member could change their email address after being subscribed via a list transfer, but some members would have to be walked through that process individually.? I'd like to avoid having to do that.? Dotty |

Re: Photos/messages not working for some?
Arno,
Is that the way attachments to an eMail are handled in Groups.io ?No. This was discussing Photo storage, whether uploaded directly or sent as part of an email message. That would cause a real problem for me as my eMail client would not beBut yes, sometimes. Message attachments, if allowed by the group, are stored by Groups.io so that members reading the group's pages can access the attachments. Normally the attachments are passed straight through to outbound email messages to those members which receive individual messages. If a member chooses to limit attachment size (or a moderator has set that member's limit) then that member will receive a link to the attachment rather than the file itself. I think the stored attachments are also hosted in a separate server from the Files folder they're listed in, but as far as I can tell that's completely hidden from us end-users. Shal |

Re: Photos/messages not working for some?
LeeAnne,
The problem seems to be fixed with the Ctrl+F5.Interesting. I think that implies that for at least some browser it is possible for the lifetime of the page cache to exceed the lifetime of those access keys. I think this is a kind of unintended consequence resulting from the photo image files being hosted in a different server than the page that displays them. It is a kind of internal plumbing issue that isn't normally noticed by the end users - unless it breaks. The difference between Firefox and IE may simply be a difference in timing - Firefox may have had that page in its cache longer. I don't know if that's something that Mark can fix, but I'll CC support on this reply to see what he says. Shal |

If I open them there is nothing to see, and they each take up only 1.8k. They seem to relate to old (migrated from Yahoo) posts that contain links to Flickr. I guess I'll leave them alone. Cheers Ken -----Original Message-----

You could try looking at them, by clicking on them, to see if they look familiar. I've seen that on other groups, but haven't paid much attention. It has something to do with the way the attachment is done. Duane -- Ken Scanes IndustrialRailwaySociety |

Re: Facebook Group Integration
I've had the Facebook Integration running for the past couple of weeks. One thing I've noticed is that the subject lines are really long and repetitive. The Facebook page 'nickname' is included with the full Facebook name and that makes it kind of long. They look something like this: "[GroupName] Facebook Nickname - FULL FACEBOOK PAGE TITLE - shared XXXXXXXX's post #facebook" ? Is this a Facebook thing or is this something that can be shortened? Groups.io RSS Feed validation?
#issue
Hello!
I'm hoping to use the RSS Feed from Groups.io to create updating content for a website still under construction.? However, the Groups.io feed doesn't validate.? I used both the homepage and the rss feed page for the parent group and all subgroups, and got the same results from two different online feed validators: Is this a common problem that can be fixed, or am I just doing it wrong? Any help appreciated, Robert |
Re: Photos/messages not working for some?
LeeAnne,
That's very peculiar. The images shown as Album covers, in the Album, and when you open the particular photo all are fetched from the same server, at least in my test group. So I can't imagine how the individual photos would be visible to her but not the miniatures in the album page.... but if it's a photo album it won't display the photos - all I If they had come from different servers I could almost imagine that she had inadvertently blocked one of them with security settings or an add-in in her browser. But that doesn't make sense when they all come from the same server. It is possible that the URL for each image generated in the Album page has a broken or stale access key. Using her browser refresh function, F5, or cache-bypass function, Ctrl+F5, might fix that. Also peculiar, but since she didn't say how she tried posting (I'm presuming on the web site, not via email) nor what was shown when she tried I'm at a loss to guess what the problem might be.I can't post to any of the groups, ... Re: Calendar Reminders appearing as Spam
Ian,
This week I found out that the reminder emails I have going out areThe one thing you can do, if you are the one creating the events, is to include a reasonable amount of specific information in the event description. Content-sensitive spam filters are typically more likely to pass a message that has more unique content. But generally speaking, no, whitelisting is something the affected members have to take care of themselves. In some email services it is sufficient for the member to mark those messages as "not spam" a few times and the filter will learn. Others offer that promise but don't learn - or not very quickly. In some email services putting the sender address in the user's address book will "whitelist" that sender (for a group's event notices, that would be the group's posting address). In some email services you can create a filter that recognizes, say, the group's subject tag and moves all messages with that tag in the subject to the user's inbox (overriding the spam filter).
