Re: Yahoo has extended deadline for downloading to January 31, 2020 11:59 PST

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt's a Verizon PR stunt, IMO. In late October, I requested my data from Yahoo. Eventually, I got a message in my Yahoo mailbox (who ever bothers to use Yahoo mail ?) saying "there is no data matching my request to download". I only have ca 20 groups, with 10,000 members, and ca 200,000 messages.Yahoo is aptly described by Lilly Tomlin and has thye same attitude as tye ell system did....? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI created a group, but don¡¯t want my email address to be shown as the owner of that group.? I don¡¯t want to delete the group as I won¡¯t be able to use that group name again for some time, but **DO** want to retain the group name. ? Any suggestions! ? Thanks.. ? Joe |

Setting the group to Announcement still allows Moderators to post. 3) Do you have any of these subscribers on a posting override? Everyone should be set at the Group Default. If this still doesn't meet with your satisfaction -- and you have a Premium group -- you can halt all group activity for however long you wish by clicking the "Lock Group" button at the bottom of the Settings page. You can delegate this responsibility to a Moderator by giving him/her the "Modify Group Settings" permission. Or simply make someone else a co-owner, which you really should consider doing anyway. Change his/her Owner Email setting to "All Emails." Bruce |

You know about the search button on the message archive page. And you can even search by hashtag. (Go to Hashtags on the lefthand menu. Click on topics.)
More info here -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Using-the-Search-Engine And at the foot of your group page, there is a Help link to the system page. There is also a ton of info in the wiki, most based on frequently asked questions. And yes, there is a search box at the top right of each wiki page. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

1) THE FAILURE of "ANNOUNCEMENT GROUP ONLY" TO STOP ALL POSTS FOR TWO DAYS TO GIVE MODERATORS THEIR WEEKLY BREAK: Yesterday, in the middle of the two day moderator/admin break, I found out about setting the group to Announcement Group only to stop posts. YET six posts have appeared this morning BEFORE I undid the Announcement group only. Why?? 2) BEING UNABLE TO GIVE A MODERATOR/ADMIN THE POWER TO CLOSE POSTINGS FOR TWO DAYS: ?It looks like I, as owner, am the only one who can make it an Announcement group only on one evening, then I, as owner, am the only one who can undo the Announcement only designation (if it only worked!!). ?Where can I give this ability to one of my moderators as was done in the Yahoo group? Okay, found it on Yahoo's site:
Beginning October 28, new content won't be able to be uploaded to the site, and all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed after December 14. We will continue to process requests to download your content as long as they are submitted by January 31, 2020.?Frances -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

Yahoo has extended deadline for downloading to January 31, 2020 11:59 PST
#yahoo
See this in Slate about the extension:
PC Magazine reports - "Verizon still plans on shutting down Yahoo Groups on Dec. 15 as a discussion board site. However, the company is going to extend the deadline for users to download content from their pages to Jan. 31, 2020. "Individual Groups users can use this tool to download any content he or she posted on Yahoo Groups," the company said in an email." That gives you time to use getmydata -? That download creates a download in mbox format. A couple of options then. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io Frances -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

Update from Mark (Groups.io) on Beta
#announcement
From Mark, yesterday:
Hi All, ?
I have unmoderated the beta group again. Please keep the discussion focused on new features and not support requests.
?
With the great Yahoo Groups migration winding down, I can turn back to projects in process before that happened. My focus continues to be on the app. It is almost ready for testing and I will soon create a new subgroup for that. The first version will not have moderator features; it's just focused on normal users. I will also be getting back to work on notifications soon.
?
I am working this week (although at reduced capacity because of a cold), and then will be on holiday until January 6th. As usual, I'll be monitoring the site. But answers to support requests will be delayed. Due to support volume, I can only answer messages from mods/owners of premium groups at this time. I wish it wasn't so, but that's reality.
?
2019 was quite a year for Groups.io. 2020 is looking to be even better. Thanks for your support!

Re: Invalid request, no reverse DNS for.... Not just an Outlook problem
You (or rather groups.io) may be falling foul of some dodgy results caching somewhere down the line. The DNS system relies very heavily on both servers and clients caching the results of lookups, although in principle negative results (such as this one) should only be cached for a short period, if at all. But it only takes one misconfiguration to cause pain.
Somewhere upstream of group.io's server lb01.groups.io, someone is saying?authoritatively that there is no PTR record for 209.242.224.96 (even though we know there is). Either lb01.groups.io is caching that negative response far longer than is necessary, or probably the upstream server isn't rechecking. Until the upstream server corrects its mistake, lb01.groups.io won't know.? If you haven't already, drop a note to [email protected]?- they'll need to kick their DNS provider... |

Re: Invalid request, no reverse DNS for.... Not just an Outlook problem
Mark promptly addressed this and just sent me a note he would increase the timeout for reverse DNS lookups and to keep an eye out for errors. This may just be the solution, and would make a lot of sense why it is a random error due to the?inherent delay in the ever growing entanglement of the world wide web. We'll see and I'll report back after giving it a bit of a chance to work.
