Entire membership receives notification when I create Subgroups
#email
First, I'm a new Premium groups.io admin. We transferred our Yahoo Group to groups.io recently.
I am still checking settings and investigating sub-groups, etc before officially announcing the switch to our members. So, I'm wondering about notification e-mails. When I did the transfer, I discovered that all 100+ members received an automated e-mail announcement that they were joined to the group, etc. I was not expecting this, and it generated some questions from people who didn't even realize I was working on this project. Then, I created a sub-group to see if we could benefit from them (I'm thinking yes), and again, all members received a notification that I created a sub-group. How can disable all member notifications until I'm done configuring/testing this group? Certainly in retrospect, I would not have added any members until I had gone through everything but due to the compressed timing of the Yahoo groups sunset, I was under a crunch to get it going. |

Thanks, Shal - One reason I'm asking about password control (I guess I'd prefer using an OAuth token) is that I'm trying to figure out a way to use the API to pre-log-in a website user from within WordPress, and through API Login functionality, log them into Groups.IO automatically.
Ideas, anyone? Thanks again for all your thoughtful replies. Gary |

Thank you, Frances! I hadn't thought of subgroups, but yes, I could add or delete members from the "active members" subgroup as necessary. However, I understand this is a manual process, unless I'm missing an API hook for this purpose.
Thanks! - Gary |

Oo er... Why do you need to be able to set passwords? Passwords are an "Account Level" feature and do not exist per group. IMHO that is a requirement too far.
Hi, Chris: The ability to set/reset user passwords is a standard feature of Wordpress, and comes in very handy when setting up groups of test users, for example. I'm still at the testing phase of this project. - Gary |
Re: Search For Groups
Frances,
I would agree with the BOT crawling.? So, the very FIRST line and the very TAIL line of the words on the main page gets placed into the main pages META data for the header aka <head> Meta description is a short paragraph of text in the HTML <head> section of a page. It is usually displayed in a SERP snippet after website's title and URL. In HTML it looks like this for our group: ? <meta property="og:description" content="*yanmar tractor owners group compact deere cadet CUT SCUT Yan... YM1900, YM1800, YM1720, YM1700, YM1500, YM1401, YM1300 * *"> ? My FIRST line is all the white-on-white text.? It does work as GIO pulls that into the meta property field. :)? And the TAIL (last line) contains much of the popular models manufactured in that era.? Thus, I now see this as a win-win when the BOT does crawl thru. ? Using the FF TOOLS > WEB DEVELOPER > INSPECTOR, the above head portion is displayed. As for the header TITLE, it seems GIO doesn't allow this for modification as it shows the first half of the group's web address as the title. I would like to see folks join GIO and not the YG listserv crippled service of our old location.? Getting the GIO group out there in the forefront ahead of the YG is very important to us going forward. BMaverick ? |

I am listed as Moderator in the top left corner. I have entered a Description.? It shows up in the middle of the Group Info and Settings area rather than above it.? I did paste this from another site.? So potentially that caused the issue. I could delete this and manually input the text I suppose.? Or is there another way to clean it up and restart? I looked at your Groups.io homepage and you seem to have pasted a section on top of the description box. Or something!Francies -- I noticed that, too. There appears to be some position: absolute or other style directives messing things up, such that content is lying on top of each other. David -- If you are cutting-and-pasting from a Word document or some other web site, don't. Clear everything out and edit your Description using the editor's own menu tools. Bruce |
Re: Honey, I shrunk the photos
Chris,
Yes, but unknown IF the reduced image size would degrade the quality worse than using a 3rd party software. This way, using the 3rd party software, adjustments and tweaks can be done to nail it right each time.? Then uploading to GIO, the same or close to the same sizing can be used. :) BMaverick |

Okay, first are you logged in as owner? Or moderator with the right permissions (I think this works. A moderator needs to be able to modify group settings to do this.) What does it say in the top left corner? Owner?? Go to Admin, Settings. There is a box labelled Description. Type there. If you open the Advanced Toolbar hidden beneath the regular toolbar) you get more styles, fonts, etc. You need to save at the bottom of the page. If you can't do this, and you are the owner, logged in with the correct email address, some of your settings are wrong. Or your browser, perhaps? You can put in hyperlinks, bold or italicize, align centre or whatever, use special characters, text colour and more. Re: Honey, I shrunk the photos
Chris,
I? experimented with this, with attachments.? It does decrease the size of the picture, in the sense that one views it as a postcard, say.? The other methods keep the picture full size. Could be I? was doing something wrong, too. More-I was able to upload 156 albums, using 66 Mb of space.? Dan |

I went to Settings and the Wiki.? I was unable to figure it out.?? The description at?/g/FordEagles?only allows one line. Scaling up may sometimes be easy in theory, but doing it in practice as well Mark has, is really incredible. There are so many things that can go wrong unexpectedly. Sometimes it is as mundane as an employee or contractor who doesn't perform as expected under the new level of stress or a minor piece of hardware that you forgot to include in your failover strategy.? Or a failover step that worked fine with 1M users, but flubs on 4M. An outage or slowdown or two under the new load is still likely, but performance so far is amazing to me.
