Re: 'show quoted text' vs showing quoted text
Sandi D.
Selective quoting is not apparent to all users. Maybe figuring out how to do it depends mostly on the user's system and experience. For example, on my iPad, I don't have access to all the formatting tools that other systems display.?
Here's the process for me: I get the daily digest summary on my iPad's mail program. It has a blue link. I click on it. It takes me to a webpage (in Safari) of messages. I click the reply button below a person's post and hit "reply to group" when done. The only other option is "discard".? And then my post displays without being tied in any way to the person I replied to. I couldn't figure out how some people put the peron and quote in their reply. I don't see any "insert quote" button or option like I see in other forums.? About 2 days ago, I accidently highlighted one sentance in someone's post because my fingers had rested on the text. When I hit reply to that person,?±¹´Ç¾±±ô¨¤!?The highlighted sentence was in my reply as a quote. I didn't copy or paste it. It just happened to be highlighted when I clicked the Reply button.? Since then, I have regularly used that feature. If there were "GIO user tips on the day" I would sign up for them. I keep finding "new to me features". Still have a lot to learn.? For example, I am at the bottom of my message now and scrolling up to the top of my message there is nothing that refreshes my memory of the person I am replying to. Even though I clicked the Reply Button that was below a specific name. So I have no clue who it is because I forgot to highlight any sentance ?And it's too late to do anything other than search each person's post and then copy the sentence I am posting a reply to (which I just did). It is:? Richard Moore saying, "I certainly agree with selective quoting, and I wish more people would use it." This very post is an example of why more people don't use selective quoting. It's not intuitive. Or maybe better said, I didn't find the process to be intuitive on my iPad. -- Sandi Dickenson Moderator of ASG Volunteers Group |
Re: 'show quoted text' vs showing quoted text
Thanks Chris, I certainly agree with selective quoting, and I wish more people would use it. But when they don't, and the whole thread is quoted in the email, I think 'Show quoted text' is what should be displayed online. It's a drag to have to scroll through multiple pages to get to the next message.?

Re: Yahoo transfer 2 questions
Eshin,
1. When the Yahoo messages are transferred into groups.ioAssuming you are talking about an Easy Yahoo Group Transfer, then the imported message retains its original date. The FAQ and the documents it cites may answer some of your questions: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups 2. If the members are imported there are no passwords.Correct. Accounts are created for the copied members but no assigned passwords. Is a password needed to post a message from email? No. As soon as they are copied over they may begin posting messages by email, subject to the group's moderation and other settings, and subject to their own Posting Privileges (which will have been copied from their Yahoo Group subscription). They will also begin to receive group messages by email, subject to their subscription settings (which will have been copied from their Yahoo Group subscription). Is a password needed to access the group's web interface? They will need to log in in order to access members-only content of the group, but they don't need a password to log in. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Yahoo transfer 2 questions
1. When the Yahoo messages are transferred into??is the date the message date or the date it is imported? 2. If the members are imported there are no passwords. Is a password needed to post a message from email? Is a password needed to access the group's web interface? Guess I'm asking what functions need a password setup during an invite acceptance. Thanks, Eshin |

So please; what is this default time you referred to? Chris |

So, I've experimented...
If I comment out line 218 the import appears to work OK! The From line is not rewritten. But is it necessary for it to be rewritten? I stopped the import after two messages. These both show the original author email and name in From, and also prepended at top of body of message. I'm assuming no emails were sent because they should have been blocked by the hashtag #mi What is the benefit of rewriting the From line, and if it is important to do that how do I fix the erroring on line 218? Thanks |

Hi,
I'm trying this, and getting error on the first message Modification of a read-only value attempted at ./import.pl line 218, <GEN0> line 5.
Anybody overcome this? I have not created all the new members (our group is not premium and so I cannot bulk add them) and I have not created map.txt. Is an accurate/complete map.txt mandatory or optional? Thank you |

Transfer Ownership of groups.io group?
Hi,
? What is the process for transferring ownership of a groups.io group?? I need to do this for a group I'm the owner of - but I'm unclear on the best process. ? What I -think- is the right way is to first make someone else a "co-owner" and then have that person "demote" me from owner to being a moderator (but not an owner).? I added the bracketed sentence to the GMF transfer instructions and to the FAQ:
Transfers require pre-payment of an upgrade of the group to the Premium Yearly or Enterprise plan. (You cannot be on a month-to-month payment plan.) Frances ?

Yes.? Until you upgrade to annual, nothing will proceed.Given that this problem keeps arising I went and had a look at the published instructions, and I can sort of see why people get it wrong. Step one of the transfer process reads Create your new Groups.io group and upgrade it to premium for a year. Although I know what it means, that is in part down to hindsight; it is arguably not entirely clear. (Most of the groups of which I am a member migrated long before charging for a transfer was introduced.) Step 5 of the process has what is almost an afterthought to it, reading Your group must be signed up for the Premium Yearly plan.?(Original in bold)? On the one hand that statement ought to remove any ambiguity left over after step one; at the same time it really ought to have beeen included as an integral part of step 1. On the other hand I would have thought that prospective refugees would have read all the instructions before starting. I do sometimes think that some of the "stuff" that comes out from Groups.io HQ is not as clear as it might be. The original emails that were sent out when members were removed for marking a message as spam were a couple that I encountered very early on. Chris |

Premium Group?
Richard
Greetings,
I am the owner of [email protected]?and, as with many folks, having trouble getting my previous groups Genealogical Brickwalls@...?transferred to groups.io. ?The Yahoo group has 1,470 members. The [email protected]?has been made Premium to facilitate the transfer from Yahoo. I chose the $20/moth Premium option. ?I have been told that to actually get the group transferred I must pay the full $220 instead of the $20/month. ? Can anyone tell me, with certainty, if the $220 is required to make the transfer happen? I would tell you that I have carefully followed all of the other directions but have not received a confirmation from groups.io that they have received my transfer request. Richard |
