Re: Photos in Files Section
Duane is correct. I was not suggesting the option to "Allow Photos in Files" be removed from gio, only that allowing photos to be uploaded to Files is not appropriate for my Groups.

It is important to understand that the "Allow Photos in Files" option checks only the extension of the file to be uploaded and inhibits image-type extension files. So, a .doc file with an embedded image would still be allowed even if that function is not set to "Allow..." One issue is that there is no thumbnail of a photo uploaded to Files, unlike in Photos. A responsible moderator will monitor what is uploaded to verify content is appropriate and not offensive; not having a thumbnail makes that difficult. Conserving storage space is important for both Basic and Premium Groups so verifying image content is worthwhile. If an image to be shared is actually a line graphic, a .pdf may be a better choice and smaller-size than a .jpg. I appreciate the informed and wise help available here! Re: Transfer NOW
Bruce,
Andrew -- You cannot *add* the [email protected] email address, youI think this advice might be hasty. Notice that Andrew said "the accepted email" - I think that indicates use of Invite. On the other hand, the green "Give Go Ahead To Transfer" should have appeared when the transfer agent accepted the invitation in Step 3. So maybe something is out of sequence. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Or an instance of the suspected bug you reported. [In fact, I thought Yahoo's direct add function was not working.]That page was removed many years ago. However, Yahoo's help on the subject confusingly offered the "Add only to mailing list" checkbox on the invite page as its equivalent / replacement. See the Invite Members screenshot in Step 3. That terminology leads some people to refer to its use as "adding" the address, even though the function is the same as a regular invitation. The only difference is that with the checkbox the Invitation that is sent doesn't direct the invitee to sign-in / create a Yahoo account. Bruce replied to my message and said that I should forward the message from yahoo that showed [email protected] had joined my Yahoo group to [email protected] and explain that things seemed stuck.? He mentioned some process that had to be restarted that may have caused a problem.?

I believe jpg images should be restricted to the Photos section and that the option to Allow Photos in Files should be disabled.Larry, I am against this. Especially if you are asking that all image files (.ep, .PNG, etc) be restricted.? Please realize that not every group uses all the features offered by GIO in the same way. Our group is composed of volunteers of a national non profit. Our central office distributes graphics to us for local use and our various group members need to download and place those full resolution image files into our chapter publications.? We don't need to actually view the image or roam through photo files, trying to figure out which image is the correct one for our needs. We don't have any images in the Photos area so?IDK if the Photo area has the option to display images by full name? I would be very concerned given we have set a limit to image file sizes that are embedded in posts or might be uploaded by some member in the future to the Photos area.? To our editors, website managers, social media managers and publicity chairs, the name is the most critical peice of information. It is how we determine which image is the one most suited for publishing in our newsletter, flyers or uploading to our website and social media sites.? For us it is so much easier/expedient to go into our GIO Publicity Folder and download the named image file needed. In Folders, we?can see the name of the image file (such as Conference 2020 logo_web.png or Conference 2020 logo_80kb.gif, or January 2020 Contest logo_2mb.jpeg) and download it. We don't need to see the image at all. It makes it easier for me to delete image files no longer needed.? Looking at an image displayed in a Photo Album doesn't tell the Editors, Web/Social Media Managers and Publicity Chairs the size of the file, the file type or its intended purpose. And as I said, should GIO restrict images from the Folders area, I would need to revisit size restrictions I have in place for the Photo area.? We are still a young GIO group (YG refugees) and the intention is to use eventaully allow our Event Chairs to use the Photo Area to share their event and speaker images with other chapters. I have limited the size of the Photo area images to the smallest because we are a basic (free) group under storage limitations. Future photos uploaded to that area won't be used in the same way so resolution isn't important.? I would very much be opposed to disabling the option to upload graphics/images into folders. To us, full resolution image files in Folders serve a quite different purpose than would reduced image files in Photos.? To the Mods- it's my understanding that image size restrictions don't apply to images in Folders. Is that the case?? -- Sandi Dickenson Moderator of ASG Volunteers Group |

I was able to start the transfer steps last night.? I sent the "Invite" which was accepted and I made moderator of my YG this morning.? I have checked several times since the "moderator" step, but I am not seeing the green "notify/start transfer" button on our existing transfer page.? Is it because this green button step takes time???
?
So very thankful,

Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer
Folks -- I haven't posted this in 7 days so I'm probably overdue to do so again. My apologies for the inevitable dupes in your email inbox.
Appended below please find detailed instructions on how to conduct a transfer using the Easy Group Transfer method. Additional resources: To check status of an ongoing transfer:??/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948
Overview and instructions WITH SCREENSHOTS:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups
Please note that the way you select an existing transfer for further processing has changed. It used to be a pull-down menu, it is now a list of links. Regards, Bruce Here is the process. It is not fully automated and will take several days.?Do not do anything out of order. The following instructions are for a full-width desktop/laptop display. This can all be done on mobile too, but it's a lot easier if you don't. 0.1 Go here:?/
0.2 At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it.
0.3 Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions."
0.4 You should be at?/yahootransfer. Read the instructions carefully, including all the Notes. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times.
Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process.?The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well.?If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected. The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |
