Gesine -- Thanks for your kind words of support.

Folks can't yell at Yahoo, because there's no one on the other end....so you end up unloading on anyone who will listen, which is frequently right here in GMF. It's all unfortunate, and unfair, but it is human nature. I for one am growing accustomed to it, and it's nice to know it will all be over in a couple months.

Meanwhile, here's a reminder that we do still have the IHateYahooGroups group where people having problems along these lines can go and vent their spleen.

Re: Customization Options? #customize #links

Sandi D.

Food for thought- consider the purpose of the links, their relationship and the ease of updating, adding and deleting them over the course of time.?

I recently read a GMF post about how to enter links into a database. The process seems to require a very specific series of events. I don't know how easy it would to be to manage arrangement, changes and additions to links in a GIO database but from what I have gathered in reading posts, many seem to be using the database for their links.

In my group, I opted to group our links into Wiki pages. I feel they are more organized, easier to find by members searching for a specific topic or "how to" and easily edited/managed by members so that they remain current. I made a TOC so the relavent wiki page of links can be readily found.

I am considering a third way of presenting links using our files. I haven't yet done so but I know that PDFs can be hosted under files and opened directly in a browser.
What I have in mind is to build PDFs containing resource links helpful to each volunteer's job description so that an individual member can opt to download it from our files area and tailor the page for local distribution to their committee members in their respective chapters. (Our GIO group members represent non profit chapters across the US.)

I currently have in place a formatted Google drive spreadsheet with an extensive number of links. It was created 5 years ago and is updated annually by each chapter's web manager or president. It contains the URLs of our 150+ chapters who have an online presence (websites, social media, forums and groups) along with contact information for the person who is responsible for maintaining their online presence.

Given that it is quite already in place and understood by our members I see no reason to bring it into a GIO database. Instead, the spreadsheet link is in the appropriate Wiki page and also sent annually in a post as a reminder for our members to update their chapter information.?

In summary, this may be a good time to evaluate the purpose of your aquired links and think about the best way to present them to your group members with minimal ongoing management effort.?

Thank you for the update. I believe I am caught in the middle of this. I was wondering what was going on. I was getting no response on my request to add them as a member to our group.I just sat down this morning tand saw the message about transferring being halted.

This seems to happen now and then at irregular intervals.? It seems to fix itself eventually, so I don't think anyone is quite sure where the discrepency comes from.? You can report it, and any other details that you're aware of, to support.? If you get a definitive answer, please let us know what it is.

Pending Approvals number marker is incorrect value

In one of my three groups, when I have no Pending Approvals I have a number marker value of -1; if there is a list of 4 Pending Approvals, for example, my number marker value is 3. If it matters, this is in the Main Group whereas its Subgroup displays the correct value, I think.

Is there a fix for this I can implement, or is this a matter for Support, please?

TIA, Roger

My group has three co-owners . .? There is still a little trust around ;-)

Update, figured out a couple more, only one left!

I also created a wiki and linked it to the main page.

Re: Catch-22: Can't Transfer Yahoo Group

Hi all,

I'm not one of the folks here who are extremely familiar with the mechanics of groups.io --

but last year when we were having groups.io transfer several large groups, I remember having to make repeated attempts to have YAHOO do stuff -- and this is NOT a problem on the groups.io side, this is Yahoo being messed up. It took me, as group owner and group moderator, multiple attempts to successfully invite groups.io as a member, because yahoo groups was just being funky.? I got the purple message a number of times, and other times it just didn't work.? And then one day, the nth time, I was able to invite them successfully. ? And of course now, yahoo is getting more and more messed up.?

So please don't leap to the conclusion that groups.io is evil or conning us or whatever --? I think Mark and all are doing a huge amount of work, and they're trying hard to complete transfers IN SPITE OF how yahoo groups is falling apart.

So, one could say "shame on yahoo groups", but there is **zero** reason to say "shame on groups.io".

And the meta:
And one thing that frequently happens, when someone is doing a significant service, and working really hard, and is addressing/helping some messy problem -- one thing that frequently happens is that people yell at THEM, rather than yelling at the cause of the messy problem.

And that is really really discouraging, to the people working really hard, the people who developed new things.? Gesine?

Re: Special Notices not delivered to all members who selected Special #specialnotice

Stan,

But after I turned off the No Email option, shouldn't they
have all received the most recent special notice?
Yes, they should have.

Could you contact one of those people to find out if they in fact received the Special Notice or not? I guess I'm poking at whether it is the send that maybe has a flaw, or the reporting.

In either case, this is sounding more and more like something where the evidence should be reported to support.

Re: Members editing and deleting their OWN messages

Tina,

I just sent another test message from my ¡®member¡¯ account, but...
Sadly, I still cannot delete. Very odd.
If you have more than one subscription (email address) in the group's Members list, both being members (not mods/owners) then one cannot delete the content posted by the other.

As far as Groups.io those two addresses represent different people.

So, is there any change the test message you sent from your "member" account, was actually posted from a different email address than the address you used to log in?

Re: how to enable subscribers to send messages without approval

Ann,

I am new at this and couldn¡¯t figure out how to add a response to the
people who responded to my inquiry.
The Reply function in your email interface should do the trick. As should the Reply link in the bar under each message when viewed within GMF's Messages section.

That wouldn't (easily) gather them for you, as you've done here though.

No, I didn¡¯t check that, but I know my own email address is registered
with Groups.io,
Registered with Groups.io is different from being in the Members list of your group. An account isn't required to post messages by email, but being in your group's Members list is required.

/Allow Non Subscribers to Post/ has been checked,¡±

*Answer:* Good point. But I definitely did not check that option.
Unless you had checked that box. But we can disregard that now that we know it isn't checked.

*Answer:* I will double-check this, but I certainly did not
intentionally give any members posting privileges that override the
group setting.
It is probably worth checking your own Posting Privileges.

When you create a group the default Spam Control setting is "New Users Moderated". So from that time until you unchecked that box any member that joins would have that Override set in their posting privileges. I think this would include you.

On the other hand, the default "Unmoderate After" is one. So after the first time you approved your own message, or the message of any other such member, that person's messages would no longer require moderation (at least, not for that reason).

Another place to check is within the Members list itself. Look for posting-related badges (P, M, NuM, or NP) next to their email addresses.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List
Either M or NuM would cause that member's messages to require moderation.

I suspect I will have my own light bulb moment one of these days.
I hope you let us know what you found when that happens.

I clearly have more to write in my wiki page on message moderation, but I hope to ensure that it would have answered your question, had I written it in time. So knowing what tripped you up will help me be sure that case is covered.

Re: Merge Groups

Greg,

Adding information to a forum is the right of anyone in the forum
actually, so I honestly do not follow your logic.
Actually, no.

The TOS requires that you have the right to add anything you post (that it is not trade-secret, or invasive of someone's privacy, or would be claimed as someone else's copyrighted work).

So importing messages in bulk runs the risk that you are importing material which you don't have the right to import. The Easy Yahoo Group Transfer mechanism actually presents a risk in that regard, but Groups.io made a conscious decision that they will rely on the Yahoo Group's admins (owner or mod) running the transfer to make that determination.

If Groups.io ever implements a way to move content from one Groups.io group to another I think it would be a mechanism that verifies the source and destination, probably not an import from an exported file.

Re: Making Titles in Digest Live Links #howto #links #question

For me, as it turns out, I discovered that the titles are active links using AOL through Firefox on my PC, but not active using AOL through Chrome on my iPad.? So for me, it is the device, not my email, that determines whether the links are active.

Most think it's a good idea, but they're the ones that trust a co-owner or only add moderators with limited permissions.? There is a big discussion on the beta group about this, but nothing has been decided as yet.

As far as deleting things, there are no settings.? When someone sends a messages, uploads a file, or adds photos, there's nothing an owner can do to prevent them from deleting it.? They own that item.? There are probably a couple of other things that I forgot on the list.? Owners, or moderators with proper permissions, can delete things belonging to others.

Re: Members editing and deleting their OWN messages

I'm getting confused.? I just went to one group where I'm an owner, one where I'm a mod, one where I'm a member, clicked on the more thingy, on all three groups the option to delete my post was there.? As a mod/owner, it appears I can delete anyone's post.? It looks like it's up to the owner to somehow set what a member can and cannot do?? Where might I find those settings?? this is a very complicated platform for someone who's not techy, and doesn't want to be.

Has anyone started receiving the following error? I'm running the latest update of Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64 (KB4524101)

I have received two of these errors when transmitting a post via e-mail, but when I retransmit the same message (I forward it to the same address) it goes through without error.

?

groups.io rejected your message to the following email addresses:

[email protected] ([email protected])
Your message couldn't be delivered. The error returned by the email server outside Office 365 suggests that the Internet's directory listing for the recipient's email domain (the text after the "@" symbol in the recipient's email address) doesn't exist or isn't set up correctly. A distinct and correct listing for the recipient's domain must exist to determine where to send the message. This can only be fixed by the recipient's email admin. To fix the problem, contact the recipient by some other means (by phone, for example) and give them the error message below to give to their email admin to fix.

For Email Admins
When Office 365 tried to send the message outside of Office 365 the external email server returned the error below. This error was reported by an email server outside Office 365 and it indicates that the Domain Name System (DNS) mail exchanger (MX) record or A record for the recipient's domain doesn't exist or isn't set up correctly. To fix this contact the recipient's email admin and ask them to work with their domain registrar (or Web host provider) to properly set up a correct MX and A record for their domain.

Only the recipient's email admin can fix this. Unfortunately, Office 365 support won't be able to help with these kinds of externally reported errors.

groups.io gave this error:
Remote server returned invalid or missing DNS MX or A record for recipient domain -> 500 Invalid request, no reverse DNS for 40.92.41.71

?

?Ken,

Yes, there have been several reports of outlook 365 email server Reverse DNS issues recently.

Do a search on "Reverse DNS" gets some of them.

Re: Members editing and deleting their OWN messages

Your answer makes sense, and something I had not considered. I had, in fact, sent the test msg from my Owner account and therefore it made sense I could not delete it from my ¡®member¡¯ account. ?I just sent another test message from my ¡®member¡¯ account, but... Sadly, I still cannot delete. Very odd. Your explanation makes absolute sense, and yet I am experiencing this non-sensical behavior.

Further thoughts?
Thanks!
