Re: how to enable subscribers to send messages without approval

Ann,

I have looked and looked at the Settings section under ¡°Admin.¡± I
can¡¯t find any adjustment to make to allow members -- including me --
to send messages without requiring approval.
There are several ways message moderation can be invoked, superseding the group's setting.

You're reminding me that I really do need to finish writing the wiki page I started on that topic.

Either he doesn't have permission to upload files or the storage space for the group is full.? You can use the Admin tools to check both.

Making Titles in Digest Live Links #howto #links #question

Is it possible to make the message titles live so that if you click in the title, it takes you down to the specific message within the digest itself? ?I don't want to make them live, as they are in this GMF group, so that they take you to the web. ?I was just hoping there was a way to avoid a person having to scroll to find the specific message.

If you've done it in a short time span, wait awhile and then try again.? The way YG is acting, it may take several tries throughout the day to finally get it to 'take'.

Which display mode you'll get depends on how you get to your group.? If you use the Your Groups drop down at the top, it will be the last one used.? If you select the group name from the overview page, /groups, it will be Topics.? If you use the last column on that page, time/date of latest message, it will be Message.

green button to go ahead with transfer - keep getting message to click it again

When I click the green go ahead with transfer button I am taken back to the top of the page where it tells me click it again because Yahoo is being flaky.
I have done this at least half dozen times, but it just keeps happening.

I think another way to solve this is to delete the member's membership and then Direct Add that person as a new member with the new email address. ? I think I have done this, and it worked.

i thought I learned before is that when you see the "address already registered" means that person is using that new address in another groups.io group. ?Hence, my approach above wirks.

Messages Display Default

When I log back into my group to view messages, display mode returns to "Topics" even though I logged out in "Messages" option.? Any way to make permanent default to "Messages"?

Member can't post - office 365/outlook problem

Dr. Denver Fox

A valid participant received this message 2 times and can't post?

From:?postmaster@...?<postmaster@...>

Subject:?Undeliverable: end waitlist for DD

groups.io rejected your message to the following email addresses:

[email protected] ([email protected])
Your message couldn't be delivered. The error returned by the email server outside Office 365 suggests that the Internet's directory listing for the recipient's email domain (the text after the "@" symbol in the recipient's email address) doesn't exist or isn't set up correctly. A distinct and correct listing for the recipient's domain must exist to determine where to send the message. This can only be fixed by the recipient's email admin. To fix the problem, contact the recipient by some other means (by phone, for example) and give them the error message below to give to their email admin to fix.

For Email Admins
When Office 365 tried to send the message outside of Office 365 the external email server returned the error below. This error was reported by an email server outside Office 365 and it indicates that the Domain Name System (DNS) mail exchanger (MX) record or A record for the recipient's domain doesn't exist or isn't set up correctly. To fix this contact the recipient's email admin and ask them to work with their domain registrar (or Web host provider) to properly set up a correct MX and A record for their domain.

Only the recipient's email admin can fix this. Unfortunately, Office 365 support won't be able to help with these kinds of externally reported errors.

groups.io gave this error:
Remote server returned invalid or missing DNS MX or A record for recipient domain -> 500 Invalid request, no reverse DNS for 40.92.20.39?

The digest header is not customizable.

The thick header pushes the links to the messages off the bottom of the view window in Thunderbird and one has to scroll down to see the links.? A 25% reduction of the header (banner) would make for a more useful Full Featured Digest. I am reluctant to recommend the full featured digest to our group members when so much real estate is taken up by the header.
This can be mitigated by screen resolution and/or reader settings, which varies depending on what client you are using, monitor size, etc. While you may be having this issue with Thunderbird and your own configuration there is little reason to believe all your other subscribers will have the same experience.

Sally -- There is no group notification associated with editing a topic.

And when editing a message (side point - why can't you edit message and topic at the same time?)...
Topics and messages have different data fields in groups.io storage. A topic can be locked or moderated, but it makes no sense to lock an individual message. A message has a message body and someone who posted it, but by itself does not actually have a subject line...its containing topic does. Topics can have hashtags, messages do not. And so on.

Back to editing messages...

I see an option not to notify the group, but is a message sent to the member who posted it?
If you -- as a Moderator/Owner -- edit a message after it has already posted, a notification is sent to the OP. If you perform the same edit on a message during moderation, no.

And - if a message is indeed sent in either case, is there a way to turn it off?
No.

Bruce

Re: New UI instructions?

Sandi D.

I took my new GIO adventures and wrote them into a group wiki.?For example, a post in today's digest described how to use the database for importing a list of links. So I take things like that and put?it in our group's wiki.?Much of GIO is intuitive and I have found the GMF wiki indespensible.

I feel it really depends on what your group's needs are. Not every group needs complete information on the full gamut of GIO features. I our changing environment, as beta requests are completed and roll out, a manual (except for the basics) becomes less useful.?

I own a personal family group that I created after leaving FB almost 2 years ago. The only instructions that were needed was on posts, logins and digests options.?

I co-own an international sewing group that makes use of wiki for tuturials. So in addition to the above they also needed a wiki how to.?

And under this email address, I moderate a volunteer group on a national level that needs all the above plus how tos on (group required) signature, (GIO vs Group) profiles, (optional) member directory and our files and databases.?
In learning much of that, I have been very grateful to this GMF group.

While I would have made substantial use of a technical manual, I have discovered the majority of those in my groups haven't any questions. They seem to prefer learning only what they need to use. Most have never even logged in. They seem to prefer using email to respond and even that has been sparingly for many of them.?

Not really, but I am puzzled. Frances; you suggested that members might be sending from a "wrong" email address, but I don't see how that could be the case unless Allow Non Subscribers to Post has been checked, and I cannot see any mention of that. Posts from non - members should on the face of it simply be rejected.

However, I am also puzzled by the sentence Sometimes, members can send messages to each other, no problem in Ann's original query. As written that means messages from one member to another not involving the group; was that meaning intended? I suspect not but clarification might be helpful.

Ann; I suggest that you have a look at your Activity Log; find it via Admin > Activity as that will enable you to see what is being posted without hindrance and what is being held for moderation and the addresses from which each message originated. I would also suggest revisiting all your Settings just in case something has been checked by accident.

Chris

I am having to end this knowing that I have a post already languishing in the moderation queue; one of the penalties of living in a totally different time zone!

I suggested checking your Settings, and realised that there was something else to include as soon as I had clicked "send".

The setting so far considered has been the Group Moderation Setting, but it is possible that individual members have Posting Privileges that override the group setting.

I suggest that you use the Activity Log to identify a member who submitted a post that was put in the moderation queue. Then go your your Members List and find that person's entry in it; click anywhere on their entry other than the check box. This will take you to that person's "personal" page; scroll down to the bottom of the page just above the Save tab and other functions, and your will find a section called Posting Privileges. The 3rd, 4th, 6th or 7th options will one way or another result in that members having posts held for moderation, sometimes temporarily until they have submitted a predetermined number of posts.

Edit and Save any setting that is "wrong".

You are the owner of the group; are you the sole moderator? If not, and there are others with moderator permissions, have another look at your activity log to see if they have been "tinkering", and if necessary smack wrists. If there are no other moderators then I cannot think of any reason why some of the individual member's settings might be a bit rogue, unless your group is an import from Yahoo in which case their settings will have been imported as well.

Chris
