The above is of no help when the photos are already in the photo archive. Their size cannot be reduced in situ; the only way of doing it is to download them one by one and then upload them again with a more appropriate Max Size In Photos Section which is available in Settings. Although possible, this method is extremely tedious and to do it fairly the newly reloaded photo has to be assigned to its originator again, becuse the reload assigns it to whoever did the processing; as you might be able to imagine this merely adds to the overall tedium.

In short, why use a 3rd party program to do what Groups.io can already do?

In another thread someone (sorry; I cannot recall who) said it would be good if the photo "edit" function included the capability of reducing photo sizes, and I suspect that that is an idea that we would all support. However, actually suggesting it will have to wait for all the dust kicked up by the Great Migration to settle at Groups.io and for Mark to get his breath back, so to speak.

Ruth; it won't help you reduce your storage occupancy now, but check the setting I mentioned above as it will minimise the risk of your storage filling up again too quickly. At the risk of repeating myself it will not reduce the size of the photos that have already been uploaded; it is not retroactive.

Thank you, Shal. I have changed my messages to "first message only" and will hope that subject lines are clear and concise.

In addition to the option to go to Digest or Summary for now, I'll also
recommend having a look on your Subscription page for GMF, in the
Advanced Preferences section (an expander).

Selecting "Following Only", "First Message Also", and "Auto Follow
Replies" together gives you a good way to keep up with the Topics that
are being discussed, without being buried under all the replies to the
topics.

If you find a given Topic to be of interest, click the "Follow Topic"
link that will be in the footer of the message. Then you will receive
all the replies to that Topic.

Of course, this works best when other members choose good Subject lines
for their new topics. ("Help" being the canonical example of a bad
Subject line - it doesn't tell anyone anything about what you need help
with). It also works best when topics don't drift off-topic.

Neither of those ideals are fully realized (at least, not in any help
group I've ever been in), but setting a good example always helps - my
thanks to those that do.

So there's another approach to managing GMF's current tendency to flood
your inbox. Or any other busy group.

Re: Members can't search messages unless I allow them to "Download Archive" #messages

Can some moderator or owner of this group tell me what settings you have used in GMF to allow members to search messages but does not give members the ability to "Export Data"?

The ability of members to SEARCH messages is a major reason why we left Yahoo Groups so this is very important to us.
I think they don't know where the search button is! ?Everyone who is signed in (for restricted groups) can search.?
Important point: if your group is private, and archives only available to members, they must login.

Here's info on the search engine:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Using-the-Search-Engine

As for export data, that's an admin function unless you choose to allow members to do it.

Members can't search messages unless I allow them to "Download Archive" #messages

I discovered that my members do not get the set of buttons and boxes that allow them to SEARCH MESSAGES until I go into Admin/Settings/Message Policies and click on "Allow Members to Download Archive".
When I do this, in addition to giving them the SEARCH facility,? it also shows a button that says "Export Data" that allows them apparently to download the entire message archive.??? These are really two different things and should be addressed as such in the SETTINGS.? So there should be two separate SETTINGS options for this.? However.......

.... I'm confused about this because in the Group Managers Forum group I am a member, I have the ability to SEARCH messages, but I don't see any button that allows me to "Export Data".? That is what I would like for my group as well.? (If somebody needs to download the entire archive, they should request this of a moderator or owner.)??? Can some moderator or owner of this group tell me what settings you have used in GMF to allow members to search messages but does not give members the ability to "Export Data"?

The ability of members to SEARCH messages is a major reason why we left Yahoo Groups so this is very important to us.

Re: Trying to get below Storage Limits

BTW, I just looked at one of my groups with quite a few emailed photos (not uploaded but attached to emails).
I am finding that some people reply WITH the attachment so it is duplicated. Easy to see the duplicated image number (file name). Also, I *think* that crazy footer might go there as well.

Some priorities for deleting perhaps?

Odd behavior in pending applications list. #bug

The "pending members" list for my group (t-vog.groups.io) started misbehaving about two or three days ago.

It says there are five entries in the list, which only shows four items. What's up with that? I understand that can't count past three, but I would assume can do better.

I first noticed this on Thursday, Nov. 14. This guy (mdoernho@...) had applied to join, and was complaining that he had been kicked out by mistake. I sent him a message explaining that he was enrolled at a gmail address, and that he had never used the acm.org address with my group. When I went back to remove his application, the "pending" list said "two", but only one item was listed. I found mdoernho@... in the subscribers list, even though I had not approved his application to join. So I removed him from the membership list. The "pending" count has been off by one ever since.

Not a big deal, I guess. But little discrepancies are disturbing.

Re: Trying to get below Storage Limits

Ruth,
?
There are FREE OpenSource photo/image tools to reduce the size of the photo and still keep the photo quality.? So, if these photos are like 2mb+ in size, these can be reduced to less than 50% in file size.? Usually these photos are high-res and high-definition that are not really needed.?
?
In some instances, just opening the photo in MS-Paint and doing a SAVE-AS will reduce the file size by 30%.? BUT, if you have hundreds of photos to do, it's best to find a program that can do all of this in a BULK processing on a folder full of photos.
?
This way, you will not have to DELETE and debate whether to keep the photo or loose it.
?
ALSO, rather than storing the photos here on Groups.io, check out the other image hosting sites as an option.
?
Don't limit yourself to just one place, this is the web, it's all linked together.

Within a single account, no. An account is "defined" by its email address, so as far as groups.io is concerned different email addresses are different people. If subscribers are willing to run two or more accounts then they can use different email addresses, although my personal opinion is that it is very messy and will lead to all sorts of confusion on their part.

As Admin in the group can I edit their profile e-mail section?

No, unless it is permissible in Premium or Enterprise Groups. That would be editing their account, not their membership of your group.

Chris

Re: Trying to get below Storage Limits

You can go to Photos and it shows you how much storage you are using.
At the bottom of Files, another number.

And don't forget that messages don't count towards storage limits.
What Is Counted Towards The Storage Limits For My Group?
?
The following are counted towards the storage limits for your group:
?
Files
Photos
Images in databases
Images in wiki pages
Message attachments
Messages themselves are not counted towards the storage limits, only any attachments.

Scott -- Yes, but each email address is its own account, and you can only be logged in under one email address/account at a time per browser instance. This approach can lead to having to log in and out a lot, and losing track of which account you're using. Generally recommended only for advanced users.

As Admin in the group can I edit their profile e-mail section?
If you have a Premium group, you can change someone's email address for them. Just go to Admin>Members, click open the record, and edit it. As this will also affect subscriptions this same person holds in other groups, it should be exercised with caution.

Do I separate them with a comma, semicolon, colon or will this not work at all? Thanks again.
If by "them" you are planning to put several email addresses here, no -- that won't work. You have to send each email address a separate invitation, or direct add them, or etc. Each email address will then hold a separate subscription to your group, if that's what you want to do.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Group Members e-mail Address #multipleemail #membersemail #memberemail

A member's email address is their account ID.

If the person wishes to send email from another account, say their work email address, they can create an alias. This alias is for sending only, not receiving.

If they wish to have a second account to a group, they can do that. But unless they tweak their subscription, they will get multiple emails.?

And no, you can't put the addressees all in one place.

Cassius -- This has been reported to GMF before. Sometimes the group merge is intentional, sometimes not. Go to?/yahootransfer, click open the two transfers, and check to see whether the same destination group is selected. If so, the agent did what you told it to do.

The transfer is complete, and now I have one group with everyone in it, and one group still empty. Can I undo this and redo it?
You first have to go to to?/yahootransfer, click open each of the two transfers, and click the "Delete Completed Transfer" button.

The go to the group that has the merged groups and delete all the content. All of it. This alone is going to take you awhile. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22822?for more information.

Then start both transfers over from square one. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/23597?for detailed instructions. Fortunately, there is no backlog now, so the transfers should proceed fairly rapidly. And with luck, you should already have the transfer agent present and promoted to Moderator, so you might be able to skip that step.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

No, it can't be undone.? You would need to do the work of removing the incorrect information.? In the meantime, you could request a second transfer of the one group to its correct destination.

In case you're wondering why the GIO team wouldn't have questioned this, several groups have done it intentionally to minimize transfer costs when 2 (or more) groups cover the same general area.
