I removed a test address from the shalstest group, and then replied again to a year-old invitation sent from that group. Presto.
I'm not sure what's encoded in that From address (of the Invitation), but clearly it could use a timeout of some kind. Maybe the same two weeks as a Pending member.
I would not want the invitation to expire for members who have not yet accepted the invitation -- not everyone uses their e-mail efficiently (or some people use it too efficiently, not dealing with mails that are not immediately relevant at the time, thus letting the message move up (or down) the message list for weeks or months).

The best solution here is that whenever a user accepts an invitation, Groups.io should check whether that user had been a member on a date that is *later* than the date of the invitation, and if so, then the invitation link doesn't work (or: redirects the user to a page where they can apply to join or login).

I'll post the bug.

The password is for access to all the groups the user has subscribed to, not just to your group.

Re: Removed member keeps rejoining, even though group is restricted

Samuel,

Thanks, but: the image that I had attached to the original mail is the
entire activity log for this user's e-mail address.
Ah, sorry. I missed that there was an attached image on that message.

Perhaps someone here can test this form me: invite me (or a dummy
account) to your group, let me join, then remove me, so that we can
see if I can join again using that same invitation.
Wow. That's quite the loophole. Or feels like it. It feels like one shouldn't have to put on a ban just to guard against the re-use of a stale invitation.

I removed a test address from the shalstest group, and then replied again to a year-old invitation sent from that group. Presto.

I'm not sure what's encoded in that From address (of the Invitation), but clearly it could use a timeout of some kind. Maybe the same two weeks as a Pending member.

I suggest sending your screen shot (unredacted) to [email protected] along with the confirmation that an old invitation can be re-used a year or more later, even after removing the member.

Re: To those who are new to Groups io

b&p,

... but have been overwhelmed with messages - about 125 a day, ...
In addition to the option to go to Digest or Summary for now, I'll also recommend having a look on your Subscription page for GMF, in the Advanced Preferences section (an expander).

Selecting "Following Only", "First Message Also", and "Auto Follow Replies" together gives you a good way to keep up with the Topics that are being discussed, without being buried under all the replies to the topics.

If you find a given Topic to be of interest, click the "Follow Topic" link that will be in the footer of the message. Then you will receive all the replies to that Topic.

Of course, this works best when other members choose good Subject lines for their new topics. ("Help" being the canonical example of a bad Subject line - it doesn't tell anyone anything about what you need help with). It also works best when topics don't drift off-topic.

Neither of those ideals are fully realized (at least, not in any help group I've ever been in), but setting a good example always helps - my thanks to those that do.

So there's another approach to managing GMF's current tendency to flood your inbox. Or any other busy group.

Re: Comcast issue

Pat,

They do not show up later, and they are not shown as bouncing.
In my opinion if they aren't being delivered (to either Inbox or Spam) and they are also not being rejected (bounced), then you have a cause of action against your email service. It is not in the least bit acceptable for them to simply drop your messages into a black hole.

But before making any rash allegations I'd have another look at the Email Delivery History tab of your Subscription page in an affected group (logged in with the affected address).

If The Most Recent Successful Delivery section reflects a recent message in the group, and you don't see it in your Inbox or Spam, then that's evidence that your email service accepted the message from Groups.io and then lost it. Or maybe evidence that you have a rogue filter in your email interface or some other issue with your setup (using POP from more than one client, without "leave on server" for example).

If that most recent success is not the most recent in your group, and you do have that one in your interface, then I would suspect a Message Selection setting other than "All Messages" in the Advanced section of your subscription. Or maybe you have Muted one or more topics or hashtags.

If there's an entry in the Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt section that represents a message which was deferred (temporarily rejected) by your email service. That's evidence of greylisting. But such messages typically are delivered after some delay for retries.

Hope something in there strikes a chord with your observations.

Your group's Activity log should contain the evidence to resolve this mystery.
Thanks, but: the image that I had attached to the original mail is the entire activity log for this user's e-mail address. This is how I could see that the member is joining by accepting an invitation, and the only invitation that I sent, was the very first one, and (according to my testing) the invitation link doesn't/shouldn't work a second time.

Perhaps someone here can test this form me: invite me (or a dummy account) to your group, let me join, then remove me, so that we can see if I can join again using that same invitation.

The line you're referring to is a simple <hr> HTML tag, and it doesn't
have a fixed width set, so it should simply stretch to fill the width of
the canvas.

If you see text rolling off the right side of the screen and you see
that line doing the same, the reason the line is doing that is not
because the line is so long but because the room in which the line can
expand in, is so wide. There must be another reason why the space in
which the message is displayed, is wider than the screen.

I'm getting complaints from a member who is unable to read list
mail, because the messages are too wide to fit on her 19 inch
computer screen. The text spills over the side, so she's forced to
scroll sideways to read it, and as a result she rarely does.
Does this happen only with Groups.io mails, or does it happen with other mails as well?

I see you mention "webmail" -- does that mean that her e-mail "program" is the webmail system? If so, which webmail system does she use? If not, what is her e-mail program and operating system?

Re: Help to transfer photos from main photo album

?
Hi Gilbert,
?
Your instructions were perfect!??
?
The email with the zip file came through almost immediately, and yes I am one very happy customer/group owner.
?
The transfer of the photos into the sub-group went very smoothly.??
After opening the zip file on my laptop, I did have to rename some files with the jpeg/jpg extension, however, most files had the jpeg extension as well as the 'jpeg.json' extension.??
?
My Apple Mac gave an 'error' message on the 'json' extension file.? So it was just a matter of only 'selecting' those jpeg files and not the others to do a bulk upload.
?
Thank you again for your help.

Re: Owner view vs Member view

Chuck,

I think it would be a nice feature if there were to be a badge in the
header, or some other indication on each screen as to whether or not
it was only for Owners, or Moderators eyes or was capable of being
viewed by regular Members.
Generally speaking, if it is in the Admin section of the left column then it is available only to Owners and Mods; otherwise it is available to Members (and possibly non-members).

Note that many pages hold different content depending on your Role in the group, or whether you are a member or not. The Directory is a notorious example.

For example, Home pages are generally viewable by the public. However the Top Hashtags and Message History sections may be restricted to Members, depending on the group's Visibility setting.

Likewise, the group's Members list can be made available to members to view, but in that case a member will see fewer columns than a mod or owner and can't take any actions.

I generally use the tried-and-true method of having two subscriptions in the group, one my mod or owner subscription, and another as a member. When I want to see what a member sees I fire up an alternate browser and use that to log in using the member account.

Thanks for the quick turnaround Bruce! Yeah, I finally realized this just a while ago myself. As I suspected, it was right under my nose. :)? Tips like this it might be nice to be given some focus in the Transfer FAQ, for Groups.io noobs like me.

Thx again, Bruce!

Thank you both Ramadoss and Duane.? Greatly appreciated.

Now that I have successfully purchased (as a result of your help), I can describe where the break down was happening

All is good.

Side note - The group I'm pulling into here is

The sad irony is ... I'm actually helping a friend (Vietnam Vet.) who has gone blind, and called on me to save his group from Yahoo.
It is a very niche group of people that have?Philips Tri-One enlargers (Camera related).

P.S.? perhaps it would be cool for the architect of this site to allow others to 'donate' premium accounts and the like to groups.? My #1 rule of business is 'Never make it difficult to take someone's money.'

Re: Second group to move

Eric,

It would make sense the use NAIAandNAIATrust as the domain (I think it
would be called) and then use Members and Board as the two sub-groups.
Yes, except that Members may as well be the name of the primary group, replacing the default of "main", as Bruce suggested. That is assuming that all board members are also members of the organization.

That's what I do with my PTA group.
The primary is Members@ unitname.groups.io
while the board is Board@ unitname.groups.io (subgroup)

We also have other subgroups, such as teachers@, and staff@, as well as temporary subgroups sometimes for volunteers organizing an event.

My only other comment is that "NAIAandNAIATrust" seems a bit awkward, even if accurate. I'd be really tempted to shorten it to one or the other, if that wouldn't be completely incorrect.

For example, if NAIATrust is in some sense a subset of NAIA (at least as far as participation is concerned) then you might have:
Members@ NAIA.groups.io (primary)
Trust@ NAIA.groups.io (subgroup)
Board@ NAIA.groups.io (subgroup)
