Transfers to a subgroup of a paid group do not have another charge, only to a main group.

Also, can someone be made a Moderator of the subgroup without becoming a Moderator of the main group?
I'm not 100% sure, but I think they can.? I know that moderators of the main group can also moderate subgroups if they have permission.

Re: Subscriber has left [email protected]

After my group transferred to from Yahoo to groups.io, I had a few unsubscribes. I think what happened is that these folks were on ¡°no email¡± on the yahoo group and had forgotten they were joined. With the automated ¡°You have been added¡± email that went out, they were reminded that they had once been part of the group, and the message gave them an easy way to unsubscribe.

New subscribers issues #subscription

Hi!
I am the moderator of ManualExchange group and apparently the new subscribes (put in moderation with the 3 msg) do not find the button "New Topic" under "#Hashtags" button....
Indeed no new messages appeared even if more than 30 Subs joint us; I am also worried for the not moderated users as well, at this point!
Could you check and verify if I did something wrong, after yahoo migration?
Thanks and BR.

Database column width changes

is there a place to change the width of the ID column ? Because of it's width, members cant print off the database.
Thanks.

Re: Best way to follow a topic?

Frances,

Something to suggest (perhaps in the new year) in Beta - add a follow
button to emails when you subscribe to all messages.
What would this do? If you are set to All Messages you are effectively following everything.

About the only effect I can imagine is as preparation for a subsequent switch to Following Only.

And no way that I can see to add a post to my list of "followed"
posts.
You can do that via the web, but you have to find the topic / hashtag via the Your Groups area, accessed via the Groups.io logo. This is in the help page, but I agree it is really obscure and needs a better user interface.
/static/help#muting

And no way that I know of for tracking my "likes".
That's true. Hopefully something that will improve with the long-awaited notifications overhaul.

I realize that the mute and follow aren't for saving posts for the
future, but it could function that way. An easier way to add in that
functionality?
There has been mentioned in beta an idea for a Favorite feature. It would be similar to a Like, except the designation would be private to you. And of course there would need to be a way to browse and search your favorites.

Subgroup Addition Query

I have a large Yahoo group (>4000 members) in line currently for transfer.
There is an opportunity to add a smaller, existing, related, Yahoo group as a subgroup on groups.io.

Is there some way to add the smaller potential subgroup to the transfrer, without incurring another $220 fee?

Also, can someone be made a Moderator of the subgroup without becoming a Moderator of the main group?

Thanks

Steve -- My attempt to be totally clear on this:

If a subscriber of your group goes to Subscription>Group Profile, creates a profile, and changes the Profile Privacy setting to either "Public" or "Other Members of your Group," then that subscriber's profile will be visible to others in the Directory.

Group Moderators and Owners can see profile information no matter what. This can lead to some confusion if they unknowingly refer regular Subscribers to the Directory for information that is not visible to them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Uploading video: get " wait for i.o --maintenace" message

Bruce is correct, videos aren't supported.??
The timeout also happens when loading a large database with lots of addresses that trigger google mapping.
You? don't notice that you are being sliced along with everyone else who is on line.
When your required processing runs to the end of your time slice, you are bumped off.

I hope this is a home video.

After completing the upload (so it says), I get a message saying "wait for groups io" and then 20 sec later a message that says: " group io maintenance: we apologize for the downtime and expect to be back shortly". This has happened several times.
You got timed out.

It seems to depend on server load and the speed of your internet connection.?

Any suggestions? What is the max size of a file to be uploaded?
I'm not aware of any fixed limitation.

Groups.io is not designed for cloud storage. My suggestion is to upload it to a Google Drive or some such and share the file via a link.

Correct.? The 26 showing are those that have chosen to make their profile available.

Directory not showing all members

I'm still not understanding this...

As an owner, I can see everyone's profile. I added myself as a member and I can't see more than a page of members (even though at the top left it says, "Showing 26 of 115 Members."

Question: Is it true that owners and moderator can see EVERY member's profile, but members can ONLY see Profiles set for "Other members of your group"?

Directory vs the Members List
There are two places with group member names:
?
one that has all members (the Members List in the Admin area) and
the Directory. However, not all members are in the Directory - you can opt out.
?
The Directory is an index of member profiles.
?
A Subscriber's profile will be visible in the Directory only if:
?
-- (s)he creates a Profile and chooses to share it (Subscription->Group Profile->Edit Group Profile->Profile Privacy*), and,
-- group settings under Privacy->Member Directory is set to Subscribers, OR
-- the person viewing the Directory has Owner/Moderator privileges.
?
The content of a user's profile can be anything they choose to put in it. Group Owners and Moderators cannot edit user profiles.
?
The Members List is an index of subscriptions.
Its visibility is set by Admin->Settings->Privacy->Members Visible.
Content is restricted by the system to designated fields (email address, display name, join date, mail delivery, etc) that are necessary to perform system functions.
?
For privacy reasons, the members list will usually be visible only to Owners and Moderators, who can also "click through" each member record to send +owner messages, view activity, save notes about this subscription, or generally manage subscription settings.
?
If you as an Owner want Subscribers to be able to "see" every other Subscriber in the group without forcing everyone to jump through the profile hoop, you must make the Members List visible. Doing so will not give Subscribers access to the underlying information, however -- only the "stuff" that appears in the main index (Display Name, Message Delivery, Email Address, and Join Date).
?
*Account and group profiles may also be edited via Account->Identity

We migrated successfully.

Tom -- Congratulations!

We did not have groups.io notify our Yahoo members of the new group.

We used MailChimp to notify our users.

A lot of that e-mail bounced as undeliverable. I don't recall any data in our Yahoo group flagging members' email addresses as undeliverable.

This is very common. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups#Y21group-after-the-transfer

MailChimp put us on "warning" that because of all the bad email addresses, it appears that we were violating their TOS by sending email to recipients who did not opt-in.

There is an opt-out link in the transfer completion notification (the one that you chose not to send).

Groups.io initial "Here's a new group" email to migrated subscribers must have the same problem with dead e-mail addresses.

How do they handle this??

GIO has their own email server and bounce handling, so not a problem like trying to use an outside service.? The Yahoo bouncing status hasn't worked right in several years, so it's not unusual to "lose" a bunch of members right after a transfer.

Yes, you would for new members, but not those transferred.? The GIO policy is that you need an approval step somewhere in the new member queue.

Ah! So if we are on ¡°Restricted¡±, all migrated members will not need to make a post to get off moderation? Then we can turn off restricted after the migration is complete?

Does it still work that way if it¡¯s on ¡°New User Moderated¡± as the migration goes through?

I¡¯m on a group who asked all members to make a post so they could get them through moderation and I¡¯d like to avoid that.

Thanks!

I suspect that there are quite a lot of Groups.io Group Owners and Moderators who either do not share that view, or at least are perfectly happy to work within it.

It is more troublesome than Yahoo has been with its somewhat erratic performance, or even the fact that for most practical purposes it is now shutting down?
