True. You have to either approve the subscriber, or his first message.?

Groups.io is very sensitive about its reputation as a spam-free zone. Others may feel differently, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

Yes, you would for new members, but not those transferred.? The GIO policy is that you need an approval step somewhere in the new member queue.

As I said, I wish I'd understood that overarching philosophy of groups.io before I migrated. Because that should be an option. I believe that philosophy is unique to groups.io. It's absolutely not a feature. It might be an intentional design limitation, but it is a limitation.

I don't believe, in the migration documents, it's clear that "Restricted" would specifically auto-approve everyone on the migration. It likely should be clarified in that context.

And, thank you, I had read everything on the information. I just hadn't realized the context of it being a limitation of the functionality of groups.io. That it has additional methods of managing moderation over other software? Great. It's nonsensical to me that, with the generally more complete functionality of groups.io, that's it's missing a feature of every other email list software.

Limiting attachment and image sizes is not the same as having a storage limit; reducing sizes simply means that you can get more individual items into the available space; his complaint sounds a bit like a complaint for the sake of complaining. It's your group and the settings are for you to determine.

Maybe he actually now has a Premium list and his image limit is now 10GB, but he hasn't admitted to that it isn't a Basic (Free) list.??
Pedant Mode: it's a storage limit rather than a image limit.

Have you actually asked him about the status of the group in question? If so has he declined to answer?

Applying the concept of Occam's Razor points towards it being a Premium Group rather than a weird malfunction of Groups.io, at least in the absence of any accurate knowledge of the type of group it is.

How does groups.io avoid being flagged as a spammer

We migrated successfully.

We did not have groups.io notify our Yahoo members of the new group.

We used MailChimp to notify our users.

A lot of that e-mail bounced as undeliverable. I don't recall any data in our Yahoo group flagging members' email addresses as undeliverable.

MailChimp put us on "warning" that because of all the bad email addresses, it appears that we were violating their TOS by sending email to recipients who did not opt-in.

Groups.io initial "Here's a new group" email to migrated subscribers must have the same problem with dead e-mail addresses.

How do they handle this??

Re: Importing/Uploading Messages to a Groups.IO Group

We've been converting the PGOffline into a CSV file.? Then using the Excel import, use the pipe character on the key board as the separator.

Then, visually look thru the excel file for any and all hiccups to mend or tweak.? Once done, you now have a very searchable file, small in size and useful vs. a PDF that causes the read to be 1. confused, 2. scroll scroll scroll up/down and scroll scroll scroll left/right constantly.? PLUS, the PDF will NOT remove the awful weird characters should any or all HTML code is scrambled in there.? The excel can do a FIND/REPLACE each of the annoying HTML codes to either nothing or a simple 'space'.

The is my 3rd bounce.? Prodigy to GeoCities to Yahoo to Groups.io.? Will it ever end.? !?? Only if I get my own server setup and a forum based software, but that takes money, time and constant upkeep. Things I don't have much in life.?

While it's possible, it's not really necessary.? I don't recall the last time a moderator posted as a moderator.? It's usually in reply to a question, same as anyone else could.? And all the names are listed in the reminder that gets posted/sent monthly if you really want to know.

Request for [GMF Moderators]

Do you think it's possible for the moderators to add [mod] to your Display Name?

There are lots of messages that come through [GMF] and it sure would make it easier to see messages coming from you folks.

As a newbie here, it would also make it easier to identify y'all.

Thanks for considering it.

Re: Importing/Uploading Messages to a Groups.IO Group

@M K

I've seen this mentioned a few times. However, PGO doesn't export directly to PDF, you'd need an intermediate step. Current (v4.0.897) options under 'Group/Export messages' are:

The most likely there would be multiple HTML files; load them in to a browser and use 'Print to PDF' (or equivalent). PGO's own 'Print message' option only prints one message at a time, and 'Export to Folder' only creates a .pg4 file (SQLite, I think).

Only if she reapplies to join or you send her an invitation; the deletion of an application either deliberately or because it time - expires cannot be reversed.

FWIW in my experience it is not unusual for applicants to fail to respond to both the "confirmation request" sent by Groups.io and / or the Pending Subsciption message set up by a moderator.

Do you moderate by email or using the web UI? I suspect the former. I suggest that you check your spam box to see if anything relevant got stuck there, and also check your Activity Log for Message to +owner which might tell you if she sent a message or not. I say "might" because it is possible that such activities are not retained if the application times out; it's something that I have never had to check.

It might be that she is "being economical with the truth". :)

BTW it is just possible that there is another explanation entirely, but it could only apply if she is in the UK.

If you "Claim a Subscription Request" the request will not be automatically deleted in 14 days:

The "Pending Subscription Message" (sent to someone who applies to join) and the "Subscription Approval Needed" notice that is sent to Owner/Moderator are both be sent at the same time, and a 14 day clock before the subscription application is automatically deleted will be started.

The "Pending Subscription Message" will not delay the "Subscription Approval Needed" notice, however an Owner/Moderator can put the 14 day clock on hold by 'Claiming' the application.
Click on "View Pending Member" in the "Subscription Approval Needed" notice email,
or go to the group's website Admin > Members
Select "Pending Members" (in the drop-down Members menu) if not already shown
Click on the row (not the check box) of the Pending Member
Click on "Claim Sub" at bottom of the page
The words "Claimed by <your name>" will appear in a blue box to the right of the applicant's email address
Now the 14 day clock has been stopped and only you can approve this Subscription by email.
NOTE: All Owners and any Moderator (with appropriate privileges) can still approve this Subscription at anytime at the website.
This allows you to wait until you get a reply to the "Pending Subscription Message".

To resend the "Pending Subscription Message" (if you get no response):
Check the box at the left end of that Pending Member's row
Select "Resend Pending Membership Notice" in the drop-down "Actions" menu
Click "Yes" in the "Verify Action" dialog window.

Jan -- If she actually replied, you will find her response in her member record. Go to Admin>Members, click open her member record (anywhere on that row), then click the "+owner Message" button at the top.

Now, that she is responding, I can I get her back?

Can she just reply, and if so, is there a time limit?
Send her an invitation (Admin>Invite) and have her click on the link in that invitation. New subscribers who accept invitations do not go into Pending status.

Bruce

Re: Pending member automatically rejected after 14 days

Well, the easy way now, I think, is to send the potential member an invitation, if you are satisfied with them as members. Or Direct Add if you are premium. (Invited people don't get a pending subscription notice.)

However there are some strategies for the future in the wiki.

If they don't reply: you can resend if they don't reply within a reasonable time.
To resend the "Pending Subscription Message" (if you get no response):
Check the box at the left end of that Pending Member's row
Select "Resend Pending Membership Notice" in the drop-down "Actions" menu
Click "Yes" in the "Verify Action" dialog window.
If they don't reply to the second probe either or don't meet your criteria, reject their request.

Pending member automatically rejected after 14 days

Jan Smith

I send Pending Member notices to my pending members, frequently, some answer back, some don'te.? Some never answer back and now, for the first time 3 of pending members have automatically been rejected.?

I received an email this morning from one of those members, replying to the latest Pending member email I sent.? This member says she has replied to at least of my previous emails, but I never go them.? Now, that she is responding, I can I get her back?

Can she just reply, and if so, is there a time limit?

Thanks, again.

Re: Identifying a Premium list

Frances,
? That is where I saw that attachments had 3.2 GB of image storage, but as far as I know it is a Basic (Free) list created in 2017.
That list owner has been complaining that a new list I created has an image storage limit because I limit attachment size and image size
while his list does not because most all their images are attachments to messages.? Maybe he actually now has a Premium list and his
image limit is now 10GB, but he hasn't admitted to that it isn't a Basic (Free) list.??

Perhaps the list type, Basic, Premium, Enterprise; should be listed on the Home Page and in the groups directory.? And avoid jumping
to conclusions.

Re: Identifying a Premium list

Edited

Evidently bouncing messages or deleting images when 1 GB image storage is reached does not actually happen.? 3.2 GB of image storage is way, way over the 1GB limit and
the list is not bouncing messages, deleting old attachments, or preventing storing of message attachment images, image storage just keeps growing and growing.
